So tell me how obama will do this?

Ok , Obama says he will cut taxes for people up to 250k a year.
he will raise the taxes of those wbove that by no more than 3 %
He will provide affordable or free healthcare for everyone!

now on these merits alone, where could he possibly get th money to pay for these tax cuts and yet also get the money to do what no one else has ever been able to afford, and pay for socialized healthcare?
I have asked this before, and not one Obama supporter has ever even bothered to take a shot at answering me.

Somehow i dont think the democrats realize that they have just voted in a president who campaigned by infomercial.
I guess Ron Popeil and Bob May will run next time?
Thus starts the era of the president of TV land. Forget whatthey do, or how well they do it, just remember who has a better Q rating.
Im voting for High school movie 5 in 2012 .

The best thing Obama can do is ignore every RW effort to define his agenda. Every pundit will shift as to what he will do and how he will do it. I think he should lay out an agenda that fits his spped and organization. I hpe he will attempt to use his mandate to hit a few homers, then get to fixing the long term problems.

But no matter what, defining the agenda is one place the RW should be left out because they want to hurt him by setting something that would not fit his agenda as a strawman, then continue to attack it as failure.

Obama is a smart man, I think he will work with the right people to put out a few things. I hope healthcare and the war will be some of the homers.

You didn't actually expect a real answer from any of the Obama supporters did you? How could they answer it when Obama has no idea how he's going to come through on his campaign promises.
There's much less than 130 mm working families. In fact the number of returns processed by the IRS topped 100mm in 2005 for the first time.
Thank you petro, you are correct. I didn't do the research, just wanted to present a quick order of magnitude calculation to show the inherent plausibility of Obama's proposals.

If there are fewer families than I assumed, the tax cuts Obama can provide to each is larger, so his proposals are even more plausible than I thought.

If you give the lowest 95% a tax refund they'll just buy booze, cigarettes, porno and lottery tickets. Cool.

What if he invests in GM to build new cars, they do so and this country creates the fuel put in the new cars . . . .then we sell those cars which are more fuel friendly, cost less and ends the dependance on oil. So we control the costs and prices. How many new jobs will that create? What if we start making things again and end this out sourcing jobs that get done at the price of $200 a month. You can stabilizing Economy by re writing the loans, refi the loans at 6% do not change house value that should end the housing collapse. The collapse is because of the ARM Mortgages that re adjusted. Last, end the $10B a month war and re invest in the US Bridges, Sewer Lines, Highways, Roads Schools and put people to work. The more people that work the bigger the Tax base, the better all companies do services, auto ect. Increasing the tax base is huge and possible.

We are going to be fine, but we'll be finer if we make an effort. However, the prosperity of the 60s is gone forever.

This country has ALWAYS made an effort. We've never stopped making an effort. We might not have always done things the right way or had the best results in certain things but we are always trying to make an effort.

I disagree. The platform of the republican party is "don't fix what aint broke", which may be appropriate at times, but should never be an overriding principle. The platform of the democratic party is too often "get elected first". Again, useful at times, but is ultimately self defeating. No one ever acheived anything without failing a few times first. I look back and don't see any real effort being made for a long time. Lowering the mandatory mpg on us autos is not making an effort. Pouring $110 billion into "alternative" fuels would be the beginning of an effort. Short of something that drastic we're existing in the status quo.
The fuel issue is the Rosetta Stone of government. It would nearly wipe out terrorism, bolster the economy like the computer, auto, light bulb did before, create millions of new jobs, and have a positive impact on nearly everything else.

Your analysis is static and assumes that as tax rates increase that behavior will not change to counteract that. People will do things to make their income go down or other things to shelter income. So you can't automagically assume that incomes will stay the same before and after a rate change.

Hi Newt. Your point is correct in theory, and history has show it to be true in practice as well when comparing behavior for a tax rate difference of, say, 36% and 70%. But how many people will alter their behavior when their marginal rate goes from 36% to 39%? Would you?

Also the rates only apply to the top portion of their income not all of it. Not sure you took that into account.

I did not, you are correct again. But the income at the 99th percentile is enough over $250,000 per year that a healthy majority of the income in the top 1% will revert to the Clinton era rates.

Yeah, are we ever going to begin to pay down the national debt?

<sigh /> My guess is that you and I would find common ground on this issue, Newtster. We could have put a huge dent in it this decade, but squandered it in oh so many ways. But now is no time to worry about deficits - that's the mistake Hoover made (or one of them).
