Fla. teacher warned of girl's abuse before death

Nearly four years before a 10-year-old girl was found dead in her adoptive father's truck, a teacher told a Miami-Dade judge the girl was being abused at home and hit on the bottom of her feet in a way that wouldn't leave bruises, a child welfare lawyer said Tuesday.

School officials warned a judge who was considering whether to let Jorge and Carmen Barahona adopt the girl and her twin brother that the girl came to school dirty and was very thin and hoarding food in her desk in 2007. A kindergarten teacher also testified that the girl, Nubia Docter, had wet her pants one day at school, which is common for children of that age.

When the teacher told the girl she was going to call her then-foster mother, Carmen Barahona, the girl became hysterical and begged her not to call, child welfare attorney Christey Lopez-Acevedo on Tuesday told a panel investigating the child's death.

"Momma is going to hit me with a (flip flop) on the bottom of my feet," the girl said when asked why she didn't want her mother called, according to Lopez-Acevedo, an attorney for the court-appointed guardian whose concerns prompted the mid-2007 hearing.

No one is holding a gun to their head making them teach.  If they want more money, find something else to do that pays more.

beKool worships Government, so he probably doesnt even realize there are private schools.  And private school teachers make significantly less money, on average, compared to public school teachers.
In 2007–08, the average annual base salary of regular full-time public school teachers ($49,600) was higher than the average annual base salary of regular full-time private school teachers ($36,300).

Yet private schools are significantly better than public schools on average, no
question. Why else would President Obama and thousands of rich liberals send their kids to private school?

Libs take the union payoffs, but dont really believe that unionized teachers are better. They dont care about others' kids, but as to their own kids, they know the obvious, that free market competition works. When teachers compete for salaries and are more accountable to students, parents, and the school administration, everyone wins. They have to produce results. This process weeds out the bad teachers and rewards the good teachers.

There you go folks . As we see in the story teachers are called upon to do more than teach . They do so many other things to help children its not funny. And as we see the wing nuts still attack them like they are nothing in a childs life but a over paid teacher. Wonder how many of these wing nut posters send their kids to school to learn the lessons parents should be teaching their kids ? Wonder how many here of these wing nuts use teachers and schools as baby sitters ?

In the story the teacher cried out for this child to judges at least one anyway and the poor thing still lost her life from abuse. And speaking of that you recall the right wing famiy value principle to protect a fetus before born , look at the responses so far they just bushed off the kid that died as by saying its none of my business its the TEACHERS JOB . Funny how life and protection for kids go to the wayside when it comes to the almighty dollar for our rabid conservative friends hell bent on destroying the very union profession that does their dirty work for them, RAISEING AND PROTECTING THEIR KIDS

Teachers are not paid enough for the job they do.

4 months off a year (3 months summer, 2 weeks Christmas, 1 week Easter, and Holidays), Outstanding benefits (health, pension, etc.) which most don't even pay a penny for and TENURE after a few short years (they can't fired!)

Try and find a job like that in the private sector.

    They are paid just fine!

To be a teacher you need to be :

A COP - Didn't realize teachers had authority to arrest people. Who knew

A CRISIS INTERVENTION PROFESSIONAL - Part of their job is to report any abuses they might see. As a coach I too am obligated to report any abuses I might see. This woman's situation happens few and far between

A JUDGE - Stop with the nonsense.

A BABY SITTER - I dare you to tell any teacher they're a babysitter. It doesn't go over well at all. THEY don't consider themselves babysitters so you shouldn't either

A  DISCIPLINARIAN - If they don't institute any type of dicipline then they'll have no order in the classroom. This isn't a job...it's a teaching tool

A SPORTS COACH - If a teacher also happens to be a coach then that is a separate job that they get additional pay for.

A PARENT - Sure, many teachers are parents.

A POLITICIAN - You mean like office politics? We all play that game. And yes, it's a game. It's not a job.

A REFEREE - Are you referring to breaking up a fight here or there? How often is that happening???

A HEALTH CARE PROVIDER - Teachers are now administering health care? Again, who knew

Are you kidding me ? If you read your story it even states some parents back the teachers. So what do we have here some parents wanting to hide the obvious about slavery from their kids. And the one that got me was the parent complaining she now has to explain what rape is.
Once again showing parents arent doing their jobs but what to complain when those big bad teachers do.

Apparently you missed the part where is said that the kids were in the 4th Grade. That would make them around 9 years old.

Now, I am all for teaching our children about the horrible things that people have committed against other people in the past. Those who fail to learn about the past are doomed to repeat it. I'm just saying that the children being taught must be mature enough to be able to grasp completely the lessons being taught

We've had some long discussions with our children about their Jewish heritage, the holocaust, and anti-Semitism but we didn't do it when they were 9 years old.

Seriously, what is wrong with you?

Teachers in a general catagory are not making near enough. The problem is some teachers are making way more than they are worth and some admin people are grossly overpaid as well based on their performance.

Then you have some teachers who work hard and love our kids that get only what they get nothing for being outstanding teachers!!

This is the problem with trying to treat everyone equal. The ones that abuse it and slack off because they will be protected and get paid anyway; take away money and initiative from those that want to do whats right!!

Re: Teachers are not paid enough for the jobs they do

This debate about what teachers are expected to do has been going on for years.  Everyone is aware of it.  Given that knowledge, despite "everyone" telling me what a great teacher I'd be and I "should" become a teacher, I got into a career that would pay more instead.  Were any teachers forced to pursue a formal education career?  No.   I love to teach, am good at it, and have tutored unpaid over the years because the career I did choose allowed me that financial freedom.  Nobody has to work for a school to teach if they don't want to.

Actually your post was weak and he just proved it by showing you why.

By the way, if a teacher administers any healthcare, they will be fired.  That includes giving aspirin or a band aid.

    And the rest was debunked.

Annualize the salaries of the teachers in this State.  6 figures is not a bad gig, let alone summers off to get another job.

If done right they could be clearing $130,000 a year.

Be-a-tool is not a parent, and has never had children go through the public school system in Mass.

Probably was a "stoner" at some middle-class suburban school system, and still lives with the parents.

Has nothing better to do than these boards, quite sad.....

Lots of professions are under-paid. The great thing about this country is no one is forced into any of these professions.
There aren't too many people who when asked if they are under-paid would say no to that question.
If you factor in tenure, three months time off, and a pension, I'd say teachers have a pretty nice deal in the overall scheme of things.

    That does it!
The evil Republicans who hate teachers have committed another assault!
The poor limp teachers are again denied another basic fundamental right guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution!
Why, didnt the Federalist Papers address the basic human right to have the taxpayers pay for your erectile disfunction medication?
