But can buy a gun. There is something wrong when a person that's kicked out of school for being too crazy and is prevented from joining the Army because of a failed drug test but can buy a gun.

First, he did not fail a drug test, he admitted to smoking pot "hundreds of times".

So, does that mean that 85% of the population has no right to own a gun because they smoke pot?

Yes, 85% of the population admits to smoking or having smoked pot.

    Not Bill Clinton though.

I think the Feds need to conduct weekly drug tests only on American citizens.

By the way, Dirty.  I see you got your marching orders.  The entire debate has been boiled down by the left to this: "our gun laws are too blame" and by extension the Republicans.

That is all MSNBC has keyed in on.

    Funny how that happens.

AZ does have some of the least restrictive gun laws in the country, BUT since the shooter was never legally declared incompetent he would have been able to buy a gun pretty much anywhere, anyway.  And he purchased the gun well in advance of the shooting so even places with waiting periods wouldn't have prevented him from getting the weapon.

I agree, the problem is what to do with people that really need psychological help. Loughner was kicked out of community college because of multiple problems; class mates were afraid of him and some quoted they thought he was the type be responsible for a school shooting.  The school new he had problems which is why they kicked him out and required a competency document from a psychologist to let him back in.  Here's the problem; the school had no one to report him to for required observation and testing.

This is similar to the VA Tech shooting but the disturbed student didn't go back to scholl he went after Giffords.

Not going to happen. The Sheriff of Pima county gave him the perfect insanity defense... If he isn't fired by EOD Friday the good people of Pima county should demand it.

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

I don't think the sheriff will be called as an expert witness on the defendant's mental status.  I don't think he has even met him.  And the insanity defense almost always fails.  The guy was a whack job, but he planned his actions and that runs against the whole insanity idea.

You don't think the defense is going to somehow bring this statement to bear in the case? Would you as a defense lawyer looking for insanity defense? Doesn't have to be an expert witness just a witness.
It takes away the "temporary insanity" but not insanity. Hinckley planned his too!

The guy was bat sht crazy and it wasn't the guns fault or his political ideology or anyone elses.

The argument could be made if, he hadn't been able to get a gun he may have been forced to find other means to accomplish his goal and been more destructive and took many more lives.

Less guns doesn't always equal less deaths either. DC used to have a gun ban. During that time DC was known as the murder capitol of the US. That's a fact.
We're a free country which at times comes with a price. This event and ones like it are devastating. But this person is a disturbed individual and was going to kill no matter what the weapon AND no matter whether he got that weapon legally or illegally. That's also a fact.

Look no further than Juarez, Mexico for proof.  3100 murders in 2010 and Mexico has some of the strictest gun laws in the world.

There are consistently 30 to 40 thousand automobile deaths each year in this country. In 2009 there were less than 10 thousand murders committed with guns.

Perhaps someone should tell Eddie that running up to someone and shouting "Vroom! Vroom!" is not really very threatening either (but not before telling him how fabulous his dress looks!)

So, the question is: are maintaining our freedoms worth suffering the pain that sometimes comes with them?  Because if they aren't, I think we should start with the biggest killers of our citizens. Just sayin.
