"you lead the financial markets to think the U.S. government might fail to pay its obligations"

Now what might make the financial markets think the US Government might fail to pay its obligations?

Might it be Obama's unprecedented wild insane Government-spending spree, and record deficits as far as the eye can see? And with no inkling he is amenable to any sane limitations on the unsustainable expansion of Government welfare programs?

The delusional liberals blame the GOP House, which wants only to negotiate some sane limit on government spending....

So now the 'reality' is that whackjob wingnuts can refuse to pay the bills of the US Federal gov't - bills that they, themselves, wrote with every continuing resolution and appropriations bill they passed?

Heh, heh, heh... someone needs to learn what reality is and that refusing to now pay the bills that they wrote previously is childish and irresponsible.

Geepers, it's like trying to teach petulant three year olds about personal responsibility.

Geepers, is Obama "responsible" for anything that has happened the past 5 years? Did not the Democrat controlled House and Senate pass his economic recovery program of endless wasteful government spending, which has failed miserably? Did not Obama 's Democrats pass the train wreck known as ObamaCare?

Sorry, Republicans elected to put some fiscal sanity in federal government spending , will raise the debt limit only when some compromise is reached...that is how bipartisanship works.

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can’t pay its own bills. ... I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”

    Sept poll:

Fifty-eight percent of those polled said any increase in the debt ceiling should be at least matched with an equal decrease in government spending. Sixty-four percent said that increased government spending hurts the economy, while 84 percent said the debt does the same.

Republicans don’t have the votes to enact their policies, so they’re attempting this hostage taking method: Agree to our demands or we’ll take down the government and the economy.

This is government by ransom - piracy over policy.

Democrats have spent us  into an inevitable crisis coming soon , but refuse to negotiate a one cent limitation on their train wreck of impending bankruptcy for out of control Government programs...
Democrats will jump off the train just before it crashes,  leaving the American people on board.

Here's what happens when you lead the financial markets to think the U.S. government might fail to pay its obligations:

    • Your debt gets downgraded (Standard & Poors cut the U.S. sovereign bond rating to AA+ as a result of the last crisis).
    • The stock market plunges (down 16% in three weeks during the last debt ceiling crisis).

Consumer confidence falls, which means people don't buy as much and the economy slows down. Last time, a deal to raise the debt ceiling was reached in August, but consumer confidence didn't reach pre-crisis levels until January 2012.

So, why are you so adamant about allowing Obama to do this, against the will of the American people?  The surveys are clear, Obamacare must go.

Might you be purely acting ideologically and in the process hurting the very people you claim to hold so close to your heart?

You keep leaning on this being passed law:

So, why is Obama delaying it?  Isn't that unlawful?

Under that same logic, why did Obama refuse to enforce DOMA and immigration laws?

    .....shhhhhhhhh......

    .....splat

The point you missed is that the debt ceiling is not something that should be negotiated over. Negotiate over the actual spending bills.

That's nice in a perfect world, but we are where we are.

In a perfect world, we wouldn't be borrowing 40% of the money to run our government and claim that it's not a problem.

As a matter of fact, think about it:  We are BORROWING money to implement a law that people don't even want.

    That's just stupid.

"So riddle me this: If the federal budget has fallen in every year of a Dem PotUS and that same budget has risen every year of the previous wingnut PotUS, who is the big spender?"

Hey, don't let the facts intrude on your alternate reality... stay stupid my friend."

We discussed this before ........the 2009 budget was incredibly massive, passed by the Democrat controlled Congress...it was Obama's budget in reality, but you can put it as Bush's so you can pretend every budget after it was "less".

The undeniable point is, Obama and Democrats have spent recklessly at unsustainable levels for 5 years now, more debt than all previous Presidents combined....your stupid transparent spinning notwithstanding.

Republicans in the House are trying to limit the reckless spending...and the Party of Government doesnt give a sh*t about people, only their endless expansion of their Deity of  Government.

Re: Two charts which show why the nihilistic neo-con's jihad is bad for America.

Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post awarded Obama Four Pinocchios, his highest level of dishonesty recognition, for “Obama’s claim that non-budget items have ‘never’ been attached to the debt ceiling.”

President Obama spoke to the Business Roundtable on Wednesday.  Included in his marks, President Obama stated,

You have never seen in the history of the United States the debt ceiling or the threat of not raising the debt ceiling being used to extort a President or a governing party, and trying to force issues that have nothing to do with the budget and have nothing to do with the debt.

    Kessler concluded his analysis,

    The Pinocchio Test

Clearly, Obama’s sweeping statement does not stand up to scrutiny, even with his caveat. Time and again, lawmakers have used the “must-pass” nature of the debt limit to force changes in unrelated laws. Often, the effort fails — as the GOP drive to repeal Obamacare almost certainly will. But Kowalcky and LeLoup speculate that one reason why Congress has not eliminated the debt limit, despite the political problems it poses, is because lawmakers enjoy the leverage it provides against the executive branch.

Kessler’s column is an eye opener and very worthwhile to read in its entirety.

Re: Two charts which show why the nihilistic neo-con's jihad is bad for America.

In 1973, when Richard Nixon was president, Democrats in the Senate, including Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Sen. Walter Mondale (D-Minn.), sought to attach a campaign finance reform bill to the debt ceiling after the Watergate-era revelations about Nixon’s fundraising during the 1972 election. Their efforts were defeated by a filibuster, but it took days of debate and the lawmakers were criticized by commentators (and fellow lawmakers) for using “shotgun” tactics to try to hitch their pet cause to emergency must-pass legislation.

President Obama said that GOP lawmakers now are trying to “extort” repeal of the health care law via the debt limit, but that’s also what Democrats wanted to do with President Nixon, who opposed the campaign-finance reforms.

Indeed, Linda K. Kowalcky and Lance T. LeLoup wrote in a comprehensive study of the politics of the debt limit, for Public Administration Review,  that “during this period, the genesis of a pattern developed that would eventually become full blown in the mid-1970s and 1980s: the use of the debt ceiling vote as a vehicle for other legislative matters.”
