Re: books on body image/respecting different sizes for young children?

I have no specific books in mind - but call Bookends in Winchester and ask to speak with the children's specialist - Marilyn is one of the employees who knows most/many of the children's books - just ask when she'll be in the store.  Also call a few libraries and ask their children's librarians to do some research for you.  I know Winchester has a good children's library, but I'm sure other towns do, too.

Oh, does your town have any nursery schools? (or the town next door?) if so, call the nursery school directors (remember their hours are probably 9-3pm) and ask them.  OR if you can find their email addresses, email a whole bunch of them.  Call/email Lexington Children's Center in Lexington, MA and see if the director has ideas; call various Bright Horizons and ask them.  (again, better if you can find email addresses so look at brighthorizons.com and find centers in your area and email them) because we directors are busy and it's hard to deal with random phone calls sometimes but we love to help and would think about it and get back to you.

I am a director myself, but I haven't looked at preschool books in a long time so I don't know of any.

Wait!  Flat Stanley is a book about body image - he gets flattened for some reason (can't remember why) and is pretty down about it until he discovers the things he can do now that he is thin....  it's become a popular book for preschoolers although it was originally written as an I Can Read early reader book. But that's about a character who has something happen (that really can't happen in real life, lol) not about a child who is super short/tall/thin/young looking/different from birth.  Not sure if that book would offend/upset you or the child, but you could check it out.

I searched on Amazon - there are lots of body image books for teenagers.
For little kids I saw a Sesame Street Book called "we're different, we are the same." and a few others. They mostly seem to be about bodies in general, but if you look through you might find something that suits your needs.

What about these I found on Amazon?  The first one is literally about size and the other is about differences in general that I'm sure a parent reading it could extrapolate/discuss with their child in terms of body image.

Just out of curiosity, if you'd rather not say never mind, but what prompts the desire to find such a book?

Check out Stinky the Bulldog.  It's about diversity in general and not judging people by outward appearances.  GL!

I know there's a bunch of little snippets from Sesame Street about different ways people move around, but that's more about different physical abilities/handicapps than actual size differences.

Geez, this makes me look like an idiot - what director hasn't read preschool books in a long time?  The kind of director who has only infants and toddlers (children under 3 yrs of age) at her childcare center!Smile

And I don't think it's Marilyn at Bookends who is the children's specialist - I think it's another name.... I haven't lived up in MA for about 7-8 years so I've forgotten more names than I know...
