    Re: Circumcision?

Notaewbie- Being Jewish and about to have a son, he will be circumsised in the hospital.  From what I have seen, with my group of Jewish friends, maybe 1 out of 10 used a mohel to have it done.  Mostly everyone has had it done in the hospital.   I think the tradition of using a Mohel is not as common as it used to be.

I am not religious at all, but all I have known is to circ so we are doing it.  Also to note, DH is not Jewish and he 100% wants to circ our son.  Dont know why.  This has never been something that was even up for discussion in our house, it is just being done because we both agreed, no further conversations needed.

Every parents have their own opinions on this, I dont pass judgement on people who do it or dont.

We circ'ed - it was my husbands choice but I supported him as I am a frequent uti sufferer and my mom who is an RN has seen some nasty utis on boys - mainly un-circ'ed.  Since I knew I was easily suseptible figured it was better to not chance it...it is much nastier to do later in life.

My husband had to be circumsized after an infection when he was three years old. He can't remember last week, but he remembers the procedure and having to be tied to his bed so he wouldn't touch it while it healed. A good friend of his had the same thing happen when he was four. We circumsized our son, his friend is having a son next week, he will circumsize also. Plus, don't quote me here. but I think I read that the AAP was updating their stance on circumcision to suggest having it done because the latest studies showed a decreased chance of contracting HIV when circumsized.

We circumcised, DH was 100% for it.  DS had an issue after the circ. where one portion of the scab would not clot and he had to be seen by specialist which was really scary.  During that time I thought oh god there was no real medical reason to have to do this etc - In the end there was no real issue for the bleeding and everything turned out fine.  I am glad that we circumcised but for a brief moment I thought it was a mistake.

Scientific studies show some medical benefits of circumcision. However, these benefits are not sufficient for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to recommend that all infant boys be circumcised.

Because circumcision is not essential to a child's health, parents should choose what is best for their child by looking at the benefits and risks. Circumcision may be more risky if done later in life, so parents should decide before or soon after their son is born if they want it done.

I have to admit I never gave having my son cir'ed much thought.  I just said yes when it was recommended and my husband thought it was the right thing to do. It was quick, simple and without complication.

I've never though of this as a hot topic. Obviously, it it.

Just an FYI, this point of reference re: circumcision and HIV infection rates has come up before on these boards. All the studies cited were conducted in sub-Saharan Africa, so there are many questions about other factors contributing to the outcomes and whether the findings would be applicable to the general American population. And, as I mentioned before, there have been no studies conducted in Europe or Oceania (where circ rates are low) that corroborate the HIV findings in the African studies. Like all important matters, doing your research and having a critical eye is key.

Wow, that's new!  I didn't realize that the same thing happened in MA before but it failed to get the required number of votes.  I have to say that without a religious exemption I can't imagine that it would fly.  While we didn't circ and I even have a Jewish background, that ingrained belief/custom which has been around for centuries would be very hard to wipe away with a law.

    Re: Circumcision?

I agree, a law would be very hard to get enacted, but if it ever were to pass, people would still go to mohels and sympathetic doctors who'd do it on the QT.  There isn't any way a US state law would get practicing Jews from circumcising their sons, and I'm betting non-Jewish (or non-practicing Jewish) parents that wanted it done would get it done, too.  The only thing the law against it would do is cause problems due to people taking matters into their own hands.  Yikes.

I'm firmly against circumcision in most instances, but at the end of the day a law banning it seems a bit heavy handed, especially without any religious exceptions. Personally I put this proposed law alongside anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage laws. The decision in either case should be a private matter between the concerned parties, not lawmakers.

I'm surprised that a liberal city such as San Fran is proposing this, although I wonder if it is a backlash against anti gay marriage advocates, especially as it specifically does not allow exemptions for religious reasons.

Lemon - Is that real??  And is that Portia Di Rossi??

I also noticed this in that article:

"A similar effort to introduce a circumcision ban in the Massachusetts Legislature last year failed to gain traction."

    I did not know this.

Maybe if they'd left the fourskin on they'd have gotten better traction.

I would not circumcize if I had a son but I don't think an outright ban is appropriate.  I'm surprised they got enough signatures to get it on the ballot.

Maybe they told signers it was a law to increase penile sensitivity. Every guy would sign that.
