Fram - fwiw, we went with the Colgate that is suggested in the BB book. No experience to share though - crib won't be delivered for a couple of weeks and DD is not due to arrive for another 9 weeks.

    Re: Crib mattress

For a variety of reasons, I decided to spring for an organic crib mattress.  There are many "organic/all-natural" crib mattresses out there, and you really have to do a lot of research.  I chose the Naturpedic.  I got it for around $200 from Diapers.com (if you're a new customer, you can get a discount). They ship for free.
    I love it!

Mel - great advice, thanks!  I was just talking to a friend about this mattress yesterday and that's the one she is getting for similar reasons.  Nice to know there is a place that offers a discount AND free shipping!

    Re: Crib mattress

We got the Colgate foam organic one that is recommended in Baby Bargains.  We actually bought it from amazon.com and got the free shipping and a good price.  Our daughter is almost 6 months old and sleeps great in her crib.  It is a firm mattress, but with a mattress pad on it, it is soft enough for her.  Also, a good thing about the foam mattress is that it is light enough for me to change the sheets and pad without a struggle.  It is very easy for me to lift out of the crib.

You probably thought I took care of this by now, huh?

We have a nice little store credit for BRU, so I've been trying to pick a mattress from their website.  I was all set to figure it out today, but the issue I'm running into is measurements.  Out of the 8 mattresses I put in my cart, only 2 of them would fit IF the measurements are accurate.

I even went to the manufacturer's web site for each and most of them don't even list dimensions.  How can they not list dimensions when it's so important for the mattress to fit properly?!!  Did anyone else run into this issue?  Am I just thinking about this too much?  I know I am, but at the same time, our crib only measures 27 3/4' wide, so clearly I can't order a 28" or 29" wide mattress!  I really want to check this off my to do list once and for all!!!

    Re: Crib mattress

    Okay, let's solve this mystery.

We bought our crib before we bought the mattress. When we bought the crib, the "children's department specialist" told us that it was "standard" size and would accomodate most standard crib mattresses. The website says
"For your child's safety, use a 27 1/2x52" crib mattress with our cribs."If your crib is 27 3/4 wide, one would assume that it takes the same "standard" mattress size as mine. So I would get one that size and make sure they'll take it back if you put it into your crib and it doesn't fit.

    Thanks lemon :o)
I just mentioned in the other thread that Poppy and I have the same crib.  Supposedly the mattress she has would be too wide (28"), but since it fits and she has no complaints, I'm guessing the dimensions listed online are not exact.  I'm going to pick one that seems close enough and cross my fingers!

Hers probably fits right up against the bars? Mine allows a tiny bit of space between the mattress and bars. Not enough to suffocate a baby. Just enough to stuff a baby sock into.

Tell me more about the flame retardant chemicals and VOC's!  How did I now know about this??  How do I know if we have them in our mattress?
I'm assuming we probably do, since it wasn't specifically labeled as being free of those things...

I think the rule of thumb is you should only be able to fit one finger next to the matress - or is it two?  Either way, I'm sure a sock is fine :o)

Thanks for bearing with me through my mattress obsession.  I tend to be really laid back about certain things and really obsessive about others... and apparently I am obsessed with the mattress!

You're absolutely right to want the mattress to be the safest possible -- it's where the baby will be spending the majority of its time.

    Re: Crib mattress

Follow up to my crib mattress obsession... I went to BRU last night to check some out.  I figured they wouldn't have the ones I liked online, but wanted to test some out anyway.  It turned out they had one that I had liked, so I measured it.

    BRU online says:  52.5 x 29.2 x 6.6
    My measurements show:  51 3/4 x 27 3/8 x 5 1/2

So clearly you can not always trust the measurements online!!!  My crib instructions say not to buy thicker than 6", so I would have ruled this out.

Annnnnd while looking at BRU just now, I saw that the price for this particular mattress ent up $100 since yesterday.  WTH???  I am kicking myself for not ordering yesterday.  On the plus side, I didn't want to spend that much even when it was $100 cheaper.

Do you feel like you're studying for a PhD in baby gear? My biggest hangup was strollers.
