Choosing a pediatrician?

Choosing a pediatrician?

Just curious where others are in terms of choosing a pediatrician? I have asked around a little and got a few recommendations in our new area that I can check out but I'm not sure where to go from here. Have others made appts and "interviewed" or talked with the doctor? This might seem so dumb of me but what questions are good to ask? Any insight is much appreciated!! -

Thanks for posting this...I'm due in Sept. and also have no clue how to go about this. Any recommendations for pediatricians from Dedham down to say Braintree? -

I also have no clue... how can you really tell what a doctor is like through a meeting? I'll probably just pick one off the blue cross website that is in our area and if we don't like them, I'll just switch. -

I choose our pediatrician last week and I'm due at the end of July. My ob/gyn gave me a recommendation, but I also asked who my DH's cousins use as they have small children and use the same hospital as us. I made an appointment to meet with the pediatrician (which I highly recommend). They gave us a tour of the office, some literature about the office and newborn info, and had a 20 minute meeting with the doctor. We really liked her and she gave a ton of info, so we are using this practice.
It is Woburn Pediatrics and they have about 7 doctors and each has a NP, a lab onsite, and Winchester Hospital has an imaging office in the same building for x-rays. -

We met with a couple people before we chose our pediatrician. A few of the questions we asked was what their philosophy regarding breastfeeding was (this was important to me), whether they follow the normal immunization schedule and under what circumstances they might not follow it. If it's a practice, how their coverage works (ie, do you always see the same doctor at well visits, how about sick visits and what about after hours), what hospitals they are affiliated with (in case you need a specialist), is there a lab onsite? For the person that asked about Pediatricians in the south, we go to Dedham Medical Pediatrics group and have been very happy. A number of DD's daycare buddies go there two and are also very happy. They are very well rated. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Yes, I think I remember them doing that when I was pregnant as well, but we couldn't go to either of the ones that were offered, so we just set up a meeting separately. It'd probably be very helpful to go to that. -

am1028, thanks for posting those specific questions that you asked. That is super helpful!! I second the recomendation for Dedham Medical. I went there as a kid, left for a little bit, but am back now as an adult. I LOVE my PCP and they have Urgent Care on weekends that is really great in case you need (which, with a little one is most likely at some point). My mom is an NP in their Internal Medicine group so I definitely think highly of the whole place.

So I read all of the info that came in the folder DH and I got at our birth class last weekend. In the packet was a two page list of questions of ask the pediatrician's you meet with. It was a very specific list and I found it super helpful. I suggest anyone else who is looking see if you find a similar resource. If not I'd be happy to post some of the questions on the sheet I have. -

In Response to Choosing a pediatrician?:
Make appointments with them, it is going to be kind of an "interview" to see how you get along or like/not like their style. Very commun, I did it, went to see 2 or 3 when I was pregnant.
