Gainey is skating circles around Chiarelli!CANADIENS INK GIONTA TO FIVE YEAR DEAL
After playing his entire seven year career in New Jersey, Brian Gionta is on the move having signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Montreal Canadiens.
The Rochester, New York native enjoyed a solid season with the Devils, picking up 20 goals and adding a career high 40 assists while sporting a plus- 12 rating. He added two goals and three assists in seven playoffs games.
Gionta's best season was in 2005-06 when he scored a career high 48 goals and added 41 assists. He also was part of the Devils Stanley Cup winning side of 2002-03.
One of the smallest players in the league, listed at 5'7'', Gionta was a third round pick, 82nd overall by the Devils in the 1998 NHL entry draft.
Earlier in the day, the Canadiens signed forward Mike Cammalleri to a five-year deal worth $30-million. Also, the Habs inked veteran blueliner Jaroslav Spacek to a three year, $11.5 million contract and defenceman Hal Gill to a two-year, $4.5 million contract

Wow, Gionta 5mill Cammi 5mill Gomez 7mill Spacek 3.5mill Gill 2.5mill 23mill for those guys alone on a 58mill cap I think it is. I love the Cammi signing for the Habs, but 5million for Gionta is absurd, plus adding that horrible Gomez contract. Gomez is very overrated! U say Gainey is walking around PC?? These are VERY questionable deals my friend. Losing Koivu Kovalev Komi is going to really hurt.

Losing Koivu will hurt from a nostalgia standpoint more than anything else. Komisarek's absence will be felt. Kovalev, well, which one? Losing the 2007-08 Kovalev would hurt; the 2008-09 one not so much.
Montreal needed significant changes from last year. On paper, these look like very good ones.
However, they still lag behind the Bruins. I love Boston's Begin acquisition. That guy is a sparkplug, and Bruins fans are going to LOVE him.

Gomez may be a bad contract but Gionta at 5 million is decent. He is a proven winner.

This Habs team is going to be small. yah, hal gill is 6' 7", but he is a scarecrow.
looks like they are going to try to go to lots of speed, and try to live up to their nickname of the Flying Frenchmen... without the Frenchmen.

Midget hockey coming to a Molson Centre near you. Onw with no soul, and no natural leaders in sight, at least as of July 1:
- Captain Koivu's apparently gone (say what you want, the guy's a true leader)
- a young goalie (Price) whose confidence is shot
- Kovalev back for another uninspiring year...
- Spacek's an overpaid 36-year-old PP specialist who doesn't play much serious D and is also injury-prone.
- Gill? Unlike Komisarek, at least he's won a Cup, but aside from being 2" taller, he's a poor substitute for Lucic's whipping boy.
- 37-year-old Robert Lang returns from injury, but for how long?
- The always overrated Roman Hamrlik (now in his mid-30's) will put in another year to collect his inflated paycheck.
- If the Kostitsyns and Pleckanec don't rebound to fulfill their potential, things could get really ugly in Montreal season #101.
Canadiens are headed for a disastrous 09-10.

It's called paying threw the nose when players do not want to play there.

Skating circles around PC - he took over what is viewed as one of the worst all time contracts in Gomez - nice move. His team was at 30 mill heading into the day, the B's were at 50. The B's didn't need to go out and spend spend spend and couldn't genious. The B'a are still a more complete team, some people read names of whats new - don't realize whats missing and what was already there. He's giving Cammaleri $6/season - more than Hossa? Giving Gionta - on a steady decline in NJ $5/ yr for 5 years. And all 3 guys are undersized. I won't even mention the D signings because if you think that was good, you have no idea what a puck is.
