You say sit down and figure out how to make the regular season relevant. How about some ideas on how that would even be possible? It is great to complain about things but to say people should fix it and not have any idea of your own, is kind of not fair.

Teams #1 and 2 in the west are still alive.

    So, WRONG!

Re: Change the NHL playoff format

Excellent idea.  First, start by only allowing 12 teams to make it to the playoffs--six from each conference.  The fact that the league permits more than HALF of its teams to make the playoffs has always been ridiculous in my eyes.  Second, give the first two seeds in each conference a bye so that they can sit out the first round. This way you reward the best teams play over the entire 82 game season.  Let them rest, get healthy, and have #1 play the lower of the two remaining and #2 gets the higher one left.  Third, go to a 2-3-2 format for playoff series, as this cuts down on travel.  Alas, I know NONE of these will ever happen because they all cut into the $$$ everyone makes, but they do give the league a little more credibility while simultaneously rewarding the better teams.

In Response to Change the NHL playoff format:
This year has proven that parity + salary cap = regular season means zippo. (get the 8th seed and your in) Do you think anyone WANTS the President's Trophy next year?  It's the Mark Of Death. If you want to build dynasties and rivalries, then - Mr. Bettman and owners - change it. Since home ice means nothing in the playoffs, sit down and figure out how to make the regular season relevant; create rivalries; and boost ratings.  This is not working.  Why? Because if you put the Leafs, Islanders, and Oilers in the playoffs, we all know they would have had an even chance to win it all.

Do a playoff system like baseball. only top teams make it with wildcards.that weeds out teams that loafed during the season.
But it will never happen. Hockey is a 4th tier sport. Changing the playoff format would take money out of owners pockets.

In the next CBA, make player contracts payable at 75 % for the regular season, 10 % for making the 1st round of playoffs and 15 % for making 2nd round.
After that, league bonuses kick in. Players shoud go for it if they make only the regular season 75% count towards the cap.

As soon as you start any discussion with reducing playoff revenue for the owners, they will laugh you out of the room while sitting at their desk counting their money.
What exactly is the problem anyway? A #8 seed beating the #1 and #2 seeds, seems to me, to be a reason to keep the format. Being unpredictable makes it interesting.
Giving the 1st place team a buy, is not a reward. Players hate that amount of time off, and your stealing money from the owners.
The NHL is different from the other leagues. It's revenue comes from the gate receipts, not television.
The first round is always the most exciting round to me. Leave it alone.
