Chara - Avoiding Contact?

Did my eyes deceive me, or did I just watch Chara refuse to nail one of the Lightening in the Bruins zone? It happened around the six minute mark of the first period, a puck against the boards about midway in the zone and to left of Rask. Chara is moving toward the puck, looks as though he could just crucify the oncoming TB forward and just when you expect Chara to really lay into him, he flicks his stick at the puck and totally avoids contact.
Just wondering if anybody else saw this? I really hope my eyes deceived me. -

Shadow,
I didnt see it...but I remember when Chara used to hurt people with his hits...there has to be something wron with him...I want him to play more like Pronger...border line dirty-mean streak...he plays way too nice for a man his size...he is actually turning into Hal Gill before my eyes -

Saw that and plenty of other "unCharalike" miscues with the puck. Thought he could have prevented that second Tampa goal and was just finishing cursing him out and wondering if he has quit on us with that poor shot attempt from that drop pass late in the period.....then he scores by heading to the net.
I can't figure him out, maybe we need to start rumours that he may win the Norris Trophy again to have him start playing like one!! -

Ouch, Hal Gill. God I hope not but my observation about his lack of hitting is the same. He's huge, built like a god, good on his skates, he should be labeling people. I mean there should be opposing team bodies scattered on the ice following his shifts. But it might be as you said, he may be hurt. -

Shadow,
Gill may be ugly to watch...but he knows his role and limitations...I am sure his Stanley Cup ring doesnt care that he looks terrible on the ice...
But I think we both know he must be hurt... -

Chara is an overpaid, over rated, uncoordinated puss that overacheived last year and you have guys on this thread sticking up for this clown. Anyone who thinks this guy is worth 7.5 per should have their head read.
No physical pressence, offensively chanlleged, defensively seems to be always f*ck up a simple outlet pass to clear the zone, can't handle skilled players with speed. This guy should be one of the first moves PC does in the offseason.
I am hoping and crossing my fingers that someone thinks he is worth the boatload of money he is making. -

You guys are correct in your obseravation/s but don't forget he has a busted up hand and came back ( probably prematurely) from a mysterious lower body injury so I am certain he is playing in serious pain.. With that said, he is not playing with the same mean streak and engaging the opposition like you have seen from him in the past.. I personally don't care if he makes $50 a year or $20 Million.. but feel we should cut him slack due to his injuries.. Just my opinion.. -

Chara was a much different player last season. Hard to fathom what is going on, it might be injury, could be loss of confidence, but whatever it is he is not the same player as last year. Last year he was a virtual lock down defensemen on top forwards but alas that was last year, and while he has never been as aggressive as Pronger but I do him remember several absolutely crushing checks but this year, again, a different and sad story. -

Yeah, the more I think about it, it has to be an injury. He was much, much different player last year. -

W T F does a injury to a finger have to do with making a hit?????
Whenever someone on this team plays like $ hit it's always the undisclosed injury BS. 7.5 million !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -

I think it's more than an injured finger. Something is wrong with the guy, for his play to drop off so significantly from only a season ago. -

Don't be surprised if and when the season ends they tell you what he is really suffering from ( injury wise).. most coachs do not disclose the nature of an injury to a player of his caliber so he doesn't get targeted in that area ..So.. I would give him the benefit of doubt until you "Know all the FACTS" . He's obviously not the same player as last year but highly doubt it's due to anything other than an injury ( and not JUST to his hand).... -

He's been playing this way since the end of last season. Are you saying he's been injured for over a year???
If he's injured to the point that he can't make a hit- then he shouldn't be on the ice-
Maybe he's just not worth the money , and shouldn't have been given the "C".
This guy reminds me of a 7' basketball player who likes to shoot jump shots, when he should be dominating inside - -

I 50 / 50 with Chara playing I am hoping it is injuries, that he is coasting until and if the Bruins make playoffs Z will then step it up. Personally I am not a big fan of Chara but he has one year left on a 7.5 mill contract this will be big ? for next seasons trade deadline or draft time. Will he be a Bruin next season? If the Bruins can use him for a good prospect I would say do it. And sign Stuart Boychuk and Siedenberg and if we can get M.A. Bergeron cause he will be a UFA and he is a power play specialist and has strong offensive skills. Stuart Boychuk Siedenberg MA Bergeron and Ference (need to stay healthy) and our draft pick is Fowler will be good start for a defense unit next season. So far we are stuck with Wideman and Hunwick unless PC can pull a rabbit out of his hat. Deadline rumour was that SJ was interested in Wideman so if we pull Wideman and a 2nd rd (or use this as start for trade options with SJ) pick to get Clowe then I will be happy. -

Only way to get rid of back contracts is to trade for another team's bad contact OR pick up some of the salary when making the trade e.g. pick up 40% of Wideman's salary and trade him for a player or prospect.
Not a good situation either way, but that's the only way it can happen in a salary cap league. -

Like last year when the season ends they will use nagging injuries as excuses. I've questioned Chara all year. Norris winner? PLEASE!!!!!!! -

In Chara, the Bruins have someone who should be the most physically dominating and intimidating presence in the league, someone who you'd think other players would be hesitant to engage contact with. Anyone still remember when as a Sen, he completely rag-dolled 6-2, 220 pound Bryan McCabe when the latter was a Leaf? For his play to be so ineffective for the majority of the year, I'm leaning towards the undisclosed injury angle. I'm not talking his finger/hand. Something about him is not right to have him go from being a beast to getting knocked about as much as he has this season. -

His finger is really effecting is shot. All and all though the guy does have the same amount of assists as last year and is a +13 on a team that can not score. -

Ya he is hurt...its not in his nature to shy away from stuff, plus his thumb has torn tendons or ligaments.....He would never hesitate to drop the gloves in the past but he hasnt fought much since his thumb got messed up.
