Drew Fata clears waivers

    Drew Fata clears waivers

He seemed the best D in pre-season, behind Boychuck (who has stayed up with the big team).  Fata was fast and confident, he fought a few times, he checked well, and he scored the game winner vs Ottawa.  Better than Wozeniewski, Penner, and McQuaid......agree?  Or not?

Another question-- Since he cleared waivers going down to Prov, then does he have to clear again to be brought back up, sent back down, etc?  Or is one clearance enough for the whole season?

I'm not a waiver specialist, but I just want to approve : Fata was the best young defenseman during the camp.

He reads the play well, do some good passes, skates fast.

McQuaid and Penner made a lot of mistakes....

    Re: Drew Fata clears waivers

Typically if you have to clear waivers to be sent to the minors you will have to clear re-entry waivers in order to be called back up.  Now each player is somewhat different based on age and service time and type of contract one way or two way. In Fata's case I'm not sure if he will have to reclear or not.

    Re: Drew Fata clears waivers

If the Bruins try to call up any of the players who had to clear waivers that were sent to Providence after 30 days they can be claimed for half of their salaries. Whether this would happen with any of those players is hard to say.

Unfortunately I believe this means Lefebvre and Fata will be down for the season, look for Penner and Mcquaid as d call ups and Marchand and Hamill as forward call ups.

    Re: Drew Fata clears waivers

Re entry waivers are not required for conditioning stints less than 14 days.

None of these d are required to reclear waivers and to be lost at 50% cost to us at this time.
    Defence
Fata has a cap hit 550K with Providence salary 125K
    Penner                 733K             P - 65K
    Bodnarchuk          566K                 60K
    McQuaid              540                   62.5
    Wozn                  600                  105K
    McKelvie              875                   65
Woz and Fata have higher AHL cost and lower Nhl costs, pretty much telling us they will be the first callups and their salaries were probably negotiated to this effect.

    Offence
    Hamil                   816                   65
    Marchand             590                   62.5
    Lehtonen              572.5                62.5
    Lovech                 607                   62.5
    Sob                     583                    62.5
    Marqu                  618                   62.5
    Riend                   563                    50
    Knack                   546                   55
    Lefeb                   500                    67.5
Unsure but I think Sobotka would have to reclear waivers in this group due to amount of games he has played in the NHL and he is still with the team.

All of these players are subject to reentry due to either age or a combination plus games played.  Luc and Wheels are the only 2 that can be sent down with cost savings to J.  If any player were to be sent down it would probably be Begin because he costs the club the most to salary cap. These salaries are not going to give us any cap relief in bringing up players from P in exchange.
    Thornt                 516                    516
    Bitz                     687                    687
    Lucic                   618                      62
    Begin                   850                    850
    Wheeler                875                    65

The only way we are going to get cap relief is to trade a higher salary.
The rest of our Players are on 1 way contracts and all would have to clear reentry unless on conditioning stints.

    Re: Drew Fata clears waivers

I am all for Fata coming up for some games when there's injuries (Ference!) he was all over the ice against Ottawa. His goal was not to shabby either.

Looks like he is good to go on having to clear waivers. You may read for yourself

    http://www.nhlscap.com/waivers.htm

“The waiver status of a player is determined by whether he has a 1-way or 2-way contract.”
Answer: False. Whether a player has a 1-way or 2-way contract has absolutely no effect on his waiver status – it has to do with the number of years since the player signed his first NHL contract and the number of NHL games he’s played since signing.

    Re: Drew Fata clears waivers

Thanks for all that good info, No4Bobby.  Looks like management was smart and structured the thing so we can call those guys up if needed. Would be interesting to see Fata get a shot.  He's not a rookie.  26 yr old and been in the AHL for the past five years, with ECHL and OHL tours before that.  Just a few NHL games, I think eight.

Ahead of him, Boychuck looked really smooth and confident in the pre season.  He might even challenge Hunwick.  Seems Hunwick was struggling some to find his game.  Playing his off side may have had something to do with it.

Ference-- the curious case.  Management seems to have  faith in him.  He was super early last year when healthy.  Then all the injuries.  Late last year and into this pre-season, it seemed that he was trying to get more offensive pop, but in doing so committed more defensive errors.  In the last Columbus game he got caught too deep trying to score and Columbus broke back, scoring to; take the lead 3rd period.

From what I read in these forums, most posters are down on Ference and consider him the weakest link in our D.

More comments and predictions about our D situation....???

    Re: Drew Fata clears waivers

Also here's the answer I got from nhlcap.com

No - he's not on a 1-way contract, and even though his AHL salary is $125,000 he's played in at least 320 professional [NHL and AHL, including playoffs] games ... so he's not subject to recall waivers.

However, if he's called up and he spends 30 days on an NHL roster this season [doesn't have to be consecutive], he would have to clear to be sent back down the first time he's assigned after hitting that 30-day mark.

Good info now it's allot clearer
