Alexandrov, Wozniewski and McQuaid will be in Providence, leaving you with seven NHL guys.

Keep in mind that Boychuk is not under contract with Boston yet.  I do think they will trade one of them, I just don't know who it will be.

He better trade a couple.  The Ference deal is terrible.  He is not even as valuable as Stuart or Boychuk and they won't get that deal.  Ference or Hunwick should be traded to resign Stuart and Boychuk.

    Chara       Seidenberg
    Wideman   Boychuk
    Stuart      Ference

    McQuaid or Alexandrov

I would agree with trading Hunwick and Ferrence and I dont think the BRUINS signed Alexandrov for keeping him with Providence...the kid is very talented and played twice on the Russian National Team.....he didnt come to America to play in the minor ...I think he can play with the big team this upcoming season ....

I still think that Hunwick is our odd-man out.  He's good enough to use as trade-bait if we package him with some picks, but not so good that we need to keep him.  Have him play under another system and I think he'd have a chance to improve.

I read somewhere when they first signed him that he needed time in Providence to learn the North Ameraican Game.  I read that to mean he played a little soft.  I can see him up later in the year and especially as injury replacement, but I think he is starting in the farm.

They hope he can be good enough to make it to the NHL.  Right now, he's a zero North American experience young defenseman.

He'll be coming to a town near you with a "P" on his chest.

Not necessarily soft.  The transition from the international surface to the NA surface is harder on defensemen because it changes all of your angles and the ways that players attack you.  More bull rushes, more having to turn and retrieve the puck, fewer guys circling out wide and looking for passing lanes, less puck possession chess.

Tough for any of us to speculate on Alexandrov's future w/ the limited amount of time anyone on here has seen him play......... unless we have some Russian specialists here.

There's always the outside chance of having Hunwick move up to wing.  He's been used there before with reasonable results.

Some good points here about Alexandrov, maybe Hunwick playing on the wing, etc. Anyway, our starting six d-men next year need to be Big Z, Seids, Manchuk, Stuey, and two of Wideman, Hunwick & Ference. One of those three has to go. It can't be either Manchuk or Stuart gone. Get this right, PC. And maybe later in the year, Alexandrov may play his way into a spot. Seems like we're deep on defense no matter how you slice it.

Good point, he didn't look too bad at wing either and its not like we are deep at wing by any means.

The Ference deal still baffles me, very overpaid imho. Boychuck and Stuart will be more important to our D corp. Will we be able to sign them both?

    Stanley,
Alexandrov was signed for the purposes of keeping his rights.. Simply put the bruins have seen enough of him at this point to keep further interest in his development..
I really think its boychuk hunwick mcquaid we are keeping 2 of the 3.. or possibly packaging Stuart off as a cap casualty.. I don't see signing ference purely for the intent of moving him..

Hopefully. I'm still not sold on Boychuk - mostly due to the fact that I'm not sure if he played the way he did because he was with Chara or because he really IS that good.  I just hope that PC doesn't over-pay him...but...you know...PC does seem to go a bit off the deep end when it comes to contracts. I think we should have Chara, Seides, Stuart, Wideman, Boychuk and Ference with either McQuaid or Hunwick as our seventh.

Which reminds me...as of the Seidenberg signing, where are we on cap space?

According to capgeek.com the Bruins have the least cap space available (other than Chicago who is already over) at 4.3 million with a 56 million cap. If the cap increases 2 million like it's rumored we'll have about 6.3 million in cap space.

Once Hall/Seguin sign, we are about 3 million to sign 6 players.  More fun to come.

There's guys on there though who are not going to be counted against the cap as thats the roster on the final day of the season (showing hamil, marchand, whit field penner etc..)The bruins are in a tight spot but its not as bad as it looks.

Alexandrov no question will spend the next 2 years in Providence learning the North American game and then will push for a NHL spot when Wideman's contract expires.

I think some people are over exaggerating Boychuck's value. He's played 56 total games in the NHL. Not even a full season under his belt at age 26. I'd offer him something similar to what Thornton accepted and if he doesn't want it he can walk.

    Chara Seidenberg
    Stuart Wideman
    Ference Boychuck/Hunwick

Re: PC will trade a D for sure

I think the confusion over the Ference deal just comes down to people not wanting to keep Andrew Ference.  Ference has played nearly 600 NHL games over 11 seasons with three different teams. He's played 74 NHL playoff games.  He has played in a Stanley Cup finals.  He's only 31. What this means is - you know what you're getting with him.  You know he knows how to be a professional in this league.  Boychuk hasn't played the equivalent of a full NHL season.  Stuart hasn't played better than a 5-6 D for more than a full NHL season.  Hunwick's erratic.  Wideman's erratic.  Seidenberg has played 17 games in Boston.  The only other guy who has much of a veteran profile on Boston's blueline is Chara.  There's value in that above and beyond what Ference's own game looks like on the ice.

If you look at what $2.25 gets you these days, it's a lot harder to criticize the money Ference is getting.  There are very few veteran defensemen (over 25 as of Oct1/09) making less money than Ference will get - maybe a dozen in the entire league and that includes that gem Andrew Alberts and AHL goon become NHL defenseman Matt Carkner.

So - if you don't like the Ference deal, it's because you don't think it's worth paying fair value for a veteran third-pairing defenseman.  Nothing baffling about that.

Sorry didn't notice them, but if you minus Hamill Whitfield and Penner you get another 3 million in cap space which effectivly is either Hall or Seguin's cap hit. I think Marchand has a real good chance of making the team this year.

I have to agree with that.  I've heard two schools of thought on that - some saying $800,000 while some are going off into Seidenberg-land.  I say he still needs to prove himself over a longer period of time before we can start off-loading other more consistant players just to keep him.  Still believe he has amazing trade-value if it comes to that.

    Yeah,
I agree with you on the Boychuk comment, he had a decent season, but half this board wants to ship out hunwick right now when he was arguably on of the best defensive rookies a year prior..

Figure skaters, speed skaters and referees are great skaters also.  Doesn't make them NHL defensemen.

Ference, like Wideman, isn't going anywhere.  He didn't sign him just to get rid of him.
