Players Crawl Out from Under Rock to get Flu Shot

Toronto and Calgary procured flu shots for the players and their families as children and pregnant women waited and were turned away because there weren't enough shots for them.

Weve known this for awhile and no one seems to have said a word about it on here. Well I don't have much to say except, you guys are the lowest of the scum and every single player who got the shot had the power to say, "no thanks, I'll give mine to a kid whose life I might save".

But no one said it. And yes, Kessel got it too and then refused to comment.

Surely keeping a hockey team healthy is more important than vaccinating health care workers and children who are at risk.

In times of urgency like this, we learn a lot about ouf fellow man.

Hockey players in Canada first class No ? Everybody else 2nd class wait in line Yes ? Gary Bettman on Sirius/FM "It was an unfortunate thing and we (the NHL) didn't know about it. So lets move on." Yah Gary "spoken like a true attorney" Bettman and as long as it doesn't keep players off the ice to sell tickets, shirts, hats etc.

Looks like Morris is out tonight with flu symptoms so there you have it. Great!

Hmm... I thought I replied to this. Must be getting a fever. But yeah, it' nice to see some people have something sort of like a conscience.

Turns out I probably wouldn't get the shot because it'll probably do more harm than good, but hey, it doesn't change the fact that those players are rotten inside.

Hopefully they're just testing the new stuff on the prisoners lol

There was a batch that went out to 18 countries that was actually contaminated with the avian flu- H5N1. Would be funny were it not so sad!

    Vaccination is for the birds!

As a Canadian, I will say that I am disgusted with how this whole priority line for a flu shot has turned out. Us, unlike the USA, have free shots at every clinic across the map. Pregnant women, children etc can get the shot for free at any time they want.

Meanwhile, a hot stuffy close quarters environment like a dresssing room practically breeds the virus. I am happy the players took it when offered, I would have taken it as well. It should have been offered anyways. Let that women who sits home all day safe from the outside world and people with the virus not have a shot ready for her.

Myself, I work for a company where 75% of our staff is out with the virus right now, yet as a 28yr old male, I am not allowed to get the shot...meanwhile, my office and computer were used only hours ago with someone contaminated and diagnosed with swine flu.

So boo hoo to all of you Americans with your you should be ashamed Canadian hockey players and teams etc. I think those most in need should have access to the shot, not just women and children who very well may not be at risk whatsoever (assuming the kid is too young to be in a school environment, surrounded by kids spreading the virus.)

Do you really think that any of the players knew about the trouble that the general population was having with obtaining the vaccine?  I doubt it.  The team probably said that they were doing a mandatory flu vaccination for players, and that was that.

I agree that it is shameful that the government got everyone all upset about getting vaccinated and then didn't come through with nearly enough vaccine.  However, it seems to me that due to their excessive travel and contact with others, professional hockey players are far more likely to come in contact with and inadvertently spread H1N1 than the average person.

I read last week that a hockey player, I believe from the Senators, left practice early to attend the funeral of his young neighbor who died of swine flu.  Not that there is any way to trace where the boy got it from, but what if that hockey player actually introduced the virus into the neighborhood?  Maybe the 60-80 or so doses of the vaccine that are given to players and their families actually save more people from contracting the flu than if they were given to pregnant women and children in the community.

Ignorance isn't an excuse, even if these guys are so ignorant that they don't know what's been going on. If you have ever turned on the radio or TV during news hour or happened to glance at a newspaper headline by accident while walking to the arena (lots of paper vendors in Toronto), then you know. And if you're so ignorant that you don't, then you'[re not worthy of being a citizen of a civilized country. otherwise, you should at least be slapped in the face.

Really? More likely to contract the virus than a healthcare worker who comes into contact with hundreds of sick people a day? More likely to be in danger than a child with respiratory issues? Come on man. Think.

There are sick kids and health care workers being turned away for vaccines. You can get this news from any news source online. That's the point.

I don't really mean to mock anyone. Just glad to share the facts.

One of the first things they tell players who sign with Toronto or Montreal is to not read the paper or watch TV, unless they want to get upset with how they are being portrayed in the media. That means ignoring all of the paper vendors while walking to the arena.

If hockey players were given priority over health care workers, than that is messed up.  Shame on whoever made that decision.

As far as the individual players, it is their job to try to stay healthy and to do what is asked of them.  They were told to come and get their flu shots, and that's what they did.  I find it hard to hold them personally responsible for this mess.

Should politics and hockey be mixed?  Probably not.   But in this case the flu shot issue was in the general media, and BU is reflecting on an issue that influences hockey players' public image and ethical posture.  The hockey world has always tried to have a beneficent outreach-- supporting things like youth hockey, hunger relief, neighborhood betterment.   Certain players like Vincent Lacavalier are known to give a large portion of their salaries (50% ?) to charities. The flu shot issue certainly falls within this purview.  The flu shot issue isn't really politics but public welfare and the influence hockey has on important facets of such.

Misogynistic comments made above are not warranted or appreciated.  Are you guys saying that following hockey is for men only?

Re: Players Crawl Out from Under Rock to get Flu Shot

Hey, haven't seen you in a while clam man. We've been in different threads maybe.

Dawg was responding to someone else who responded to me, but you're right that there's a huge ethical issue here, even if not everyone's interested in it. I've been proud of the Bruins for their charity work, and do judge a team in part on the basis of what the members do when they're not on the ice. Had the Bruins pulled a George Costanza, runing over old ladies to save their own ar ses on their way out of a burning building, I'd be adequately ashamed.

Good example: Lecavalier. He has always had my respect on this basis and what Chara and Ferrence did for Right to Play was awesome too. Recall Chara's little hat at the All Star hardest shot competition :)  He also convinced other participants to contribute money for the charity of their choice. A class act.

As for the Misogyny, well, I will refrain from commenting any further unless directly addressed.

I'll just say that in my time here this is the first thread I post that isn't directly hockey related, but the last thing I expected was a direct attack on the basis of gender. I might have withheld my gender from the start, I suppose.

    Thanks for this.

    BU

PS: Politics is mixed with everything in a free nation, and freedom of expression ensures that no discussion is off limits if it's of interest to anyone.

Don't get me wrong, I respect your opinion. I just don't buy the ignorance tale, and if I did, I'd be very sad for the players.

In places like China, Pakistan and Turkey there are no real news sources because the government censors them for fear that people are saying things that are not pleasant, and people walk around ignorant as F unless they have a special APP to help them run proxies online that will enable them to access international info without getting caught because getting caught means being locked up for things like going on youtube, facebook or blogs.

Well this is North Amerca. I don't see any excuse for ignorance in Canada and the US.

That's cool, BU.  I respect your opinions, and admire your ability to debate without resorting to personal attacks.  I presented a differing opinion in this thread as a different perspective on the situation.  I have no intimate knowledge of what the players knew or didn't know about the flu vaccine shortage when they lined up for their shots.

As for the misogynistic comments hurled by some in this thread, they speak far more about the authors of those comments than the target of the personal attacks.  For me, a person's opinion bears much more weight when they can articulate it without belittling others.  But hey, W-T-F do I know?
