    Yelle to Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes signed veteran forward Stephane Yelle to a US$550,000, one-year deal on Wednesday.

    - per TSN

To see him sign for this amount makes me mad. I would've rather kept him than sign Begin at this amount. I figured the Bruins didn't sign him because he was asking for to much.

    Oh well.

He's a 4th line center who has averaged 1 goal per 10 games in his long career (last season was 1 every 11) and Begin can kill penalties and play tougher - and for next to nothing more in $ - its not a big deal.

I'd much rather have Yelle then Begin. Yelle is a better penalty killer than Begin. Yelle doesn't take the number of penalties that Begin does. Yelle isn't as injury-prone as Begin is. Above all, Yelle is a winner and Begin isn't.

the cheap signing price says to me that the remaining ufa are desperate.

    check the list...

Forgive me for fantasizing, but it would be pretty cool to invite a bunch of has been guys like Afinogenov and seeing which one might spark his career back to life and sign him.  Like Metropolit a couple of years ago.

I think it's more of the fact that it's Vladimir Sobotkas time. PC has a good formula of expierenced with Youth movement. Sobotka could step in if Begin were to return to his physical woes. Rare to see a european player with a chip on his shoulder and play as physical as Vladimir does.

Yelle did a decent job for us but I think PC wants some more youth and grit. So Stephane was the odd man out. The Canes will be an intresting team to watch this year for sure. I look forward to those games.

Agree 100% regarding Sobotka - This kid can really take the body, and provide a lot of energy. I hope he gets his chance.

It's not Begin over Yelle....SanDog is 100% right here. With Begin and Sobotka, Yelle is expendable. You don't need 3 guys to fill that role on a team.

I hope Sobotka plays better than he did against Hershey in the Calder Cup playoffs. He spent more time in the penalty box than he did on the scoresheet. I think he can be productive. He just needs to play smart. I'd rather have him playing than Begin. I have no use for Begin whatsoever

I agree on Sobotka.  Also, probably pinching every bloody penny out for Kessel.

Amen to that.  Yelle was a solid go-to guy all year for us.  One you wanted out there in key situations.  Critical face offs, calm presence, nothing stupid.   I can understand letting him go to make room for new talent, but not for bringing in the mercurial and ill-reputed Steve Begin.  We can only hope that the guy turns out better than his reputation.

Sometimes management decisions leave you scratching your head, saying "HUH?"

    Re: Yelle to Carolina

I'd take Begin over Yelle and I know my stuff :P Yelle was a faceoff specialist only, brought in after Boston finished bottom 3 in faceoffs the previous season... and he was average at best in the circle last year.. Begin is tougher dirtier and harder to play against.

PS.. Sobotka would demand a trade if mgmt was foolish/stupid enough to re-sign Yelle with this current utopia of forward depth.
