    Abandoned Numbers

Before more stupid high numbers come into play, I'd like to see all of the lower numbers used.

    6, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 21, 25, 26, 28

The last guy to wear #10 was Bochenski.  Why no love for 10?  Are players expecting them to have a Billy O'Dwyer night and retire it?

No more of these 40's and 50's and 60's.  Fill in the cracks first!

(I left #19 off because it's cursed.  Leveille, McCarthy, Thornton, Seguin...  Retire that one for the good of the team!)

50, Metropolit was the last 10.

Redden had 6 last year, Daugavins had 16, and Horton had 18, so it's not like those 3 have been out of circulation long.

I can remember thinking how odd 47 looked on the back of Don Murdoch back in the late 70's.

Years ago if you were assigned a high number in training camp, chances are you werent going to make the team. Now, the younger players request the higher numbers. We can pobably thank Gretzky,Lemieux and Lindros for that one.

    Re: Abandoned Numbers

I'd love it if some hard core old-timer said we're going back to the number you get is assigned by your position.

    1 - first string goalie

2-3 Top D pairing, 4-5, second pairing, 6-7 third pairing

8-10 Top line, 11-13 second line, 14-16 third line, 17-19 fourth line.

    Backup goalie - 30.

If they've retired your number, put a 2 in front of it or a 3 if the number is in the teens.  30 should never be retired.

That would take some of the individual branding away, wouldn't it?  And some guys would have more than one number over the course of their careers.

    Are you not entertained?!?!

Gretzky, period.  That and whoever had the brilliant idea to wear your draft year or birth year.  I don't think Ryan Smyth was the first, but he's one I remember; Crosby, too.  Also guys like Mogilny taking a number for the year they defected.

I hate the high numbers.  "Look at me!!!!"

The first high number that I remember that wasn't a "double digit" (66, 77, 88, 99) was Klima's 85.  I think it had political or historical significance.
