    Backstrum given match penalty

    Just heard on NESN that Backstrum was given a match penalty at the end of the game for cross-checking Peverly in the face. Supposed to be an automatic 1-game, hopefully Shanahan doesn't over-turn it.

    Nice win, hopefully the chippiness gets the B's fired up.

    Considering the heat Shanny has faced last week, and how out of control other series have gotten, plus he refused to rescind Adam's match penalty in Pens game, I think Caps will be without him for a game. And considering he retaliated for a Pevs trip on Ovie with a cross check to the nose, I don't see it being rescinded.

    It was between Ovechkin and Peverley . Backstrom came in high on the face of Peverley. Another coward.
    I like what Ovechkin did as it was 3 on 1 , he got in between Peverley and the other Cap players as a peacemaker.  Broke it up but only after the crosscheck.
    Still liked what Overchkin did.

    It's too bad Shawn Thornton isn't on the roster.  These things don't happen when skating clowns are dressed.  He's a big deterrent to all liberties being taken.

    Ovechkin did everything he could to avoid unnesseccary penalties. Good on him. If he was able to stop Backstrom's cross check, I'm sure he would have. But he was on his back because Pevs tripped him, prompting Backstrom to retaliate as he did.

    its an easy argument to make because no one can prove how many incidents havent happened due to him being there but my guess is its more then a few.

    Bob McKenzie then adds since there was no harm to Peverley most likely they won't suspend and again a big BUT with all that has been going on you never know.
    Why can't they just apply the rule ?  It's an automatic game !

    That cross check was very similar to Asham's on Couturier and had intent for something that just happened on the ice.

    The NHL apply's the rules to suit their fancy as witnessed by the Marchand suspension, which was not a clip as defined by the rulebook.The NHL wanted to appease some league members, thus the suspension. As far as Backstrom, seeing as he is such an important part of the Caps line up, i doubt he will be suspended.

    I don't know... been watching and reading some "expert" opinion and I can see Shanny giving Backs a pass just to keep things close.

    I doubt Shannahan shows up the on ice officials here.  With the way the other series are going, you need to let them control the games.  Even with his huge ego, and the fact that every other playoff team is pulling for the Caps to knock off the defending champs, I don't think he overturns this.

    A rule was put in place to prevent this exact situation at the end of games.  The play will be reviewed to make sure the refs got it right, and the replay clearly shows a cross check to the face, which is exactly what the refs called.  The call on the ice will stand, with no additional discipline, and he will serve the 1 game suspension.

    Seriously NAS? You complain when he's on the ice in the game's dying minutes then you complain that he didn't do anything about it (of course he didn't. He was on the bench and the game was over!)
