This statement borders on ridiculous...if it were true, why didn't every kid who ever got his picture taken with Gordie Howe become an NHL star?  Or was Gretzky the only kid lucky enough to pose with him?

Hangnail, no disrespect to you but I don't think you're even in the ballpark with what 49 is saying here. In no way did he say that all kids who posed with Howe would make the NHL or become an NHL star.

What he was saying was that meeting his idol Gordie Howe might have played a small role in inspiring Gretzky to make the NHL. This idea is far from bordering on ridiculous.

the season cannot start soon enough...these nonsense topics are useless. which is exactly why i haven't been posting since end of june! the fact that "fans" believe they are "owed" something from men who play a game- is hilarious. the people who are clamoring for their autographs and photos are the one's responsible for creating these egotistical monsters(not saying brad is). treat them like normal people, and maybe that's how they will act. treat them like they are gods, and guess what you'll get? hmmmmm.

Self-righteous much?  I suppose the one million fans at the parade were all a bunch of jock-sniffers, treating the players like God's.  I haven't been to a single one of these things in my life, but what is wrong with other fans going to see the Stanley Cup??  Being that judgmental of other fans says more about you than them.  Good grief.  The players set up public viewings because they know people want to come, meet them, and see the Cup.  What's the big deal?

One last link for you guys that seems to refute the claim that Marchand left early from St. Margaret's Centre. Let's remember the idea of him snubbing the fans by leaving early is a claim made by only 1 faceless poster on a forum. I'm more inclined to trust Canada's most reputable news organization.....the CBC, whose reporter claimed that Brad, at 4pm, could still be seen bending down to allow young kids the chance to touch the Cup before being whisked away. Sounds to me like Brad honoured his commitments. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/story/2011/08/29/ns-marchand-stanley-cup.html

Fletch, before you do this I think you need to go to your previous post on this thread and read your first sentence. A poster with their first post sometimes is a better read then someone who has posted thousands of times ( myself included ).

Which one?  I have about a dozen posts on this thread.  Several are stupid.

Of course, my point is not about whether myself or other long time posters say stupid things or not (we do).  It is rather that most long-term posters don't post fabricated or incorrect information to start a new thread (saying Marchand left early when he didn't).  I should probably look at the poster before believing such things.  Get what I'm saying?

I wonder why pro athletes are put in some sort of a special class from others in the entertainment industry.

And it is the entertainment industry, same as music, movies, broadway shows, tv shows, the circus, porn, comedians, arcades, video games and disneyland.

If I'm supposed to go somewhere to get Jenna Jamison's lipstick print or Mickey Mouse's pawprint and I don't get it, I'm disappointed.  If I find out that Mickey or Jenna couldn't make it because they were at a kitten and puppy shelter, I'm no less disappointed.

I'm thnking that Jenna and Mickey should be professional enough and sensible enough to realize it hurts business for them to leave people disappointed.

The show must go on.

The way I read it was that meeting Howe helped a young Gretzky develop       (49's word) into an NHL star.  Personally I don't think that's true.

Inspire (your word) or motivate - maybe; but not "develop".  Semantics I know...bottom line is that you and I just interpreted it differently. No harm, no foul.

In Response to Re: Brad Marchard day with the Cup, Fans left dissapinted : I hardly think that asking someone for an autograph, a photo or a handshake is "treating (him) like a god".  Hockey players, like it or not, are role models for young athletes.  While I don't always agree that they should be adored or put on a pedestal, the dedication and years of hard work necessary to play the game (any game) at the highest level is something to be admired.  If a young player thinks "if I work really hard, maybe one day I can become a pro hockey player like <insert name here />".  If getting a photo with that player helps inspire that kid, then so be it.  Everyone's seen that pic of a young Wayne Gretzky with Gordie Howe -- you don't think that photo helped, in some small way, develop the greatest player who ever lived? Anyways, my main point is that a player should keep his commitments to the public.  IF HE SAYS that he's gonna be somewhere for photos and autographs till 2:00pm, it looks bad if he leaves before the appointed time, with a bunch of disappointed fans standing around.
MeanE, you are right. The original poster, plus Rolerhoky[ in spades] are totally ignoring the facts, as reported publicly, that Brad started at 5 A.M., immediately after the hurricane went thru, brought the CUP to his home area and during the day attended a number of open events to show the cup and say hello to hundreds of local fans and friends. Couldn't do much more if he tried. The poster's wrong and I applaud Brad just as I applauded Bergie and other Bruins for their commitment and thoughtfulness. Arriving late meant he had been delayed with other fans; and leaving early meant he had additional places to spread the viewing of the Cup.
Posted by bogie6
There are not "facts" reported other then his day started at 5 am and was busy.. My days starts at 4:30 every morning, and I  get home after 8pm most nights.. It wouldnt excuse me from being a jerk, or not fulfilling my obligations..

I never said marchand was a jerk, If your read through I never say anything along those lines, but nothing in that article says anything to suggest that what the poster experienced wasnt true either..Those are the actual facts.. So many of you just want to make an excuse for anything.. I was making the point that this poster who was there, experienced this first hand, someone digging up an article saying BM spent the day running around doesn't actually prove anythign he said to be wrong..

It was marchands day with the cup, it was also only one day, meaning he was probably spread a little thin, but he should be able to handle doing so for only one day as well.

ok Mean !  Some fans just want to savour this moment (a Cup summer) as long as possible.  I went to most events within 600kms (370miles) from where I live because I could do it and had the time.
I'm not a teenage jock sniffer, I'm 44 years old and enjoyed seeing many Bruin fans come out .
From the Stanley cup parade till this weekend in Burlington I've met so many people that I've known through the years and never knew they were Bruin fans.
In every day life,  in my town,  you wouldn't know who's a Bruins fan. Many never showed their colors.

Great to see.

But people traveled long distances to go to the parade and then they waited in line for hours just to see them for a quick pass...just like the guy who went to see Marchand and the Cup.

Just don't understand why some fans are ripping on other fans, just because they want to meet a player or see the Cup.  To each his own.

Oh, I get it. A faceless poster claims Brad left early and you're willing to believe him over someone (who's paid to report actual events) that stated clearly that Brad stayed until 4 (meeting his requirements). I never said you think Marchand is a jerk. I really don't care as it has no bearing upon whether or not Brad held up his end of the bargain. You figure the reporter read in an earlier press release that Brad was supposed to still be there at 4 pm, bending over to allow young kids to touch the cup before being whisked away? I think this report directly disputes what was said by the poster. Sorry I couldn't find a more reputable news source for you but the CBC is as good as we have in Canada.

none of what your saying here, is supported in either of the sources you posted.
Both of the sources you posted outlined his day and nothing else. There was no reporting in either of them.. And I never even said I believe everything he said, just its stupid for people who werent there to attack him with no knowledge of the situation.. Maybe your unaware of this, but there are inaccuracies in the news all the time..  Stop being so dense jesus.. The guy said he was there, this is what he saw.. You dig up 2 articles that do nothing to refute anything he said, and yet this guy is the moron.. Even if the article said brad was there till4.. it wouldnt mean he was there till 4, this is a puff peice, and 3:45, verse 4 pm wouldn't be a significant distintiction to the story.. If you had said you were there, and heard he was late because of traffic, and then left early because the private party was for charity and he was concerned about the traffic going back that would be something, but you werent, you dug up two stories to support he had a busy day, this does nothing to discredit what the posters expereince actually was..

Up until 4 p.m. when it was time to leave, Marchand was still bending down to let some of the younger kids get a chance to touch the cup, which was whisked away to spend some quality time with Marchand and his family.

Chowdah,
I am guessing thats from the article I can't get into.. I tried to double check how it was stated before I made the comment so absolutely..

But in the same instance if marchand left at like 3:45 to go to his next engagement, they could still report it as being 4, with out it significantly affecting the story is my point.. This isn't a journalistic piece were accuracy is really important, its a feel good piece..
