If the folks at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference last week were hoping for the usual honest opinions from Burke they got it. “The worst thing that ever happened to sports was talk radio,” Burke said. “And the internet is talk radio on steroids with lower IQs.”

True. Arrived with a lot of hype and bluster. Still seems odd that while Wilson was coach the Leafs didn't resemble the team they presently have which fits the description of the type of group Burke promised. They claimed to be on the same page in that regard but seems like they were not. -

I guess in Burkes defence Wilson was hired before he got there, right RHO? -

Burke has always been a straight shooter. he made a poor decision with Kessel, but has never cried about it. Phaneuf and some of the others, like Colbourne have been less than expected, but all GMs cannot be as good as Peter C.

You're right, 50. That press conference of his where he announced the type of tough team he wanted set the expectations of what was thought to follow. It would appear Wilson was leaning towards a speed and skill team not the "pugnacity, testosterone..." one Burke cited. -

Its funny Burke would say that when Wilson's previous teams in Anaheim and San Jose were far from truculence, pugnacity & testosterone, but maybe he thought Wilson would change.

Perhaps 50 but Burke's Cup team of '07 had the likes of Shane O'Brien, Parros, Perry, Beauchemin, Shawn Thornton and Brad May. They did fit Burke's criteria. -

I know they fit Burke's criteria, but maybe not Wilsons. -

If you have a problem with being faced with intense public opinion, be it online or on the radio, you should probably not take a job with the Leafs or Habs.

red,Burke was never shy about being on THE FAN 590, AM 640 or TSN 1050. He also regularly appeared in The Star, The Sun and National Post. He was the face of the Leafs not one of the players.

50, the sports talking heads up hear bought into it big-time. The Toronto area version of THN had a cover pic of Luke Schenn and this headline: "Beware NHL! The Bay Street Bullies Are Here!" Okay. -

Burke's single biggest mistake was not properly evaluating his goaltending. If he does a better job of that, then Boston doesn't get the picks, and no one talks about this.
His first year he brings in Martin Gerber who wins some big games for them and moves them down the draft order to #7. Maybe it will work out, but maybe they could have had a top 3 pick. Kadri might tun out to be the best of the bunch, but there were some pretty good players available like Tavares, Duchene, Hedman, and Kane. I remember him saying that he'd do everything he could to get better right now, and that was why he traded for Gerber. Problem was he had no talent to work with and was getting rid of everyone there so why not take the pass from the fans and management, and not tank out the first half year he was there, but just let it run it's course and get the best player available? No one would have questioned it.
Then he doesn't keep Gerber after that, and goes with Giggy, who had lots of injury problems, and the Leafs dropped off in the standings, even though they had Phil the Thrill, and finished second last. (thanks)
Then they sign "The Monster", and on and on.
Then Reimer shows up out of nowhere, and almost got them into the playoffs. But next season he gets hurt 9 games in, (cheap shot by the schabs of course) is never the same, but Burkie doesn't do anything to go get a good goalie to cover until Reimer is healthy again.
If he had had good goaltending, the B's get average picks, and everyone says the Leafs won the deal.

Good points perry. To them I'd also extend it to him overestimating the talent of the Leaf roster at that time. I'm thinking he assumed there was no way the team would finish near the bottom of the overall standings giving the Bruins a couple of blue-chip prospects. -

Signing Komiseric alone makes him look dumb. Everyone from the Boston Montreal fan base knew Komo was done after Lucic beat the tar out of him, twice. TML defense was and still is very poor in my opinion. -
