    Bruins @ Capitals 29-03-2014 GDT

    BRUINS (50-17-6) at CAPITALS (34-27-12)

    TV: NESN, CSN-DC

    Last 10: Boston 9-0-1; Washington 5-3-2

Season series: The Boston Bruins have beaten the Washington Capitals in the first two games at TD Garden, 4-2 on March 1 and 3-0 five days later.

Big story: The Bruins became the first team from the Eastern Conference to win 50 games and clinch a division title while rebounding from their first loss in 13 games in a 3-0 win against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. Tuukka Rask made 28 saves to earn his League-leading seventh shutout as the Bruins and Blackhawks played for the first time since Game 6 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final. The Bruins have outscored the opposition 51-19 over the past 14 games.

"I think the biggest thing is, you never want to play on your heels," Bruins coach Claude Julien told the team website. "A lot of teams, and this team here in the past many years ago, was a team that kind of was always afraid to lose and would sit back and would let teams come at them in the third period.

"We like to play on our toes versus on our heels and I think just going after teams and the fact that we seem to have lots of energy and seem to be fresh in the third period. It just seems to be working out well for us."

    Team Scope:

Bruins: Center Patrice Bergeron, who was hampered by a punctured lung, cracked rib and separated shoulder in his team's six-game series loss to the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final last spring, scored two goals to lead the Bruins to victory on Thursday.

"The puck's going in, I guess," said Bergeron, who has 25 goals. "There's not much to say about it. It's just, you get those chances sometimes during the year and it doesn't go in. And now it is. Obviously, it's great anytime I can chip in offensively and keep my two-way game. I'm happy with it."

Boston has at least one point in 14 straight games (13-0-1) and is 16-1-3 in its past 20 games. The Bruins had won 12 in a row before a shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.

Capitals: Captain Alex Ovechkin scored two power-play goals on Tuesday in a shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings to tie the Capitals' single-season record of 22 goals on the man advantage set in 2000-01 by Peter Bondra. Ovechkin has seven goals in 13 games in March, all on the power play. Center Nicklas Backstrom, who sustained an upper-body injury against the Kings in the second period, told The Washington Post he would "absolutely" play against the Bruins. Backstrom was injured after taking a hit from Kings defenseman Drew Doughty.

"I saw [Doughty] was there and I was trying to jump around him on the outside, but hit the edge of the boards [and went up]," Backstrom told the paper. "Bad luck, but what's important is I'm feeling better now and looking forward to [Saturday]."

Coach Adam Oates said center Mikhail Grabovski could return from a sprained left ankle that has sidelined him for 21 of the past 22 games. Grabovski has been skating as an extra forward at practice the past three days.

Who's hot: Bergeron has a six-game point streak and career-high five-game goal streak (six goals) for the Bruins. … Capitals right wing Joel Ward has four goals and five points in the past six games.

Injury report: Boston is without defensemen Dennis Seidenberg (knee) and Adam McQuaid (leg). … Washington defenseman Jack Hillen (upper body), who collided with Ovechkin in overtime on Tuesday, and Backstrom (upper body), are both probable. Forward Brooks Laich (groin surgery) is out.

I hate afternoon games.  I have things I need to do today, dammit!  Now they will not get done.  GO BRUINS!

Hope Leonsis keeps Oates after he finally jettisons McPhee. He and MacT need to go to off-season school doing more to bring in goaltending. Halaks SV% is .929 but it has not kept Washington from Jekyl n Hide. This team could take out Pittsburgh or Montreal if they got in.

Yah get your choirs done today, Philly is an early game mañana. Barbara Streisands mom and Rinaldo will be hunting on Sunday.

Stay out of the penalty box and keep Ovechkin quiet. Was it the Caps who dealt the B's their last regualtion loss? Been so long I can't recall!

wonder whether we start seeing some Chara-less defensive pairings as the season winds down

I know many here really dislike Caron, but rotating him through to provide rest for some wingers is also probably in the cards

Dilemma Bruins win they help the Leafs crap why do they have to play Capps,I guess Bruin win in overtime, that way they can still stick it to Leafs, don't even like Bruins to loose when it can screw the Leafs.

I for one don't dislike Caron. Despite the very limited playing time Julien gave him this year, everyone knows exactly what Caron brings to the team; at best a big body defensive forward with not much offensive skills.

Instead of rotating in Caron, I would give some Providence kids auditions to see what they can do.  The postseanon is going to be a long one (I hope) and in the event the Bruins have to put in a replacement, they need more options that just Caron.

    Saturday afternoon hockey is awesome!!!

Gonna predict a Boston loss today only because this game is so important to Washington and it is much more important for Boston to stay healthy and rest key players. Holtby is a nemesis too!

1 v 1 -- Ovie bearing down on Boychuk. Wedged off -- No shot -- No pass -- Boychuk comes away with puck. The guy continues to improve. Still my 7th player.

zam, Ovechkin looked lazy on that play - didn't make much of an effort to get the puck let alone to fight through Boychuk.

Play JB just made on the PK to end the PP?  That was sweet.

Someone tell Holtby he's playing the Flyers. He looked great that first period. Thought he got away with a couple of rebounds but he made some real nice saves.

I thought the B's were dominant.  Just keep it 5 on 5, the Caps offense lives off the PP.

I think thats the biggest key to this game stan. You'd think the Caps would be more desperate with the position they are in. They're lucky to escape that 1st period still tied.

Bruins all over the Caps, forecheck is on right now. The 4th line hasn't missed a beat, applying pressure every shift since the break. Love how Mezsaros doesn't hate to shoot, never hesitates. Like the fact that Mez is on the Bruins 2nd unit PP (should be 1st) instead for Smith.

All four Bruins centers have serious jump in their legs in the 1st. Tuukka was playing rock-paper-scissors with a couple of Cap fans for a good part of the period.

anyone else have the same nightmare everytime they play sub par goalies in this league? its the one were after every bruins shot the other teams goalie is picking a snow covered puck from the center of the crest on his jersey?

Even more credit to JB -- Maybe Ovie thought twice about making a move.

Correct on the PK -- Boychuk was airborn when he lifted that one out.

That's what I'm trying to figure out kel. Is it the B's are playing that good, or is it the team they're playing can't match them in the intensity & depth dept? It's not just the Caps they're doing this to. The Yotes, Minny, Chic, Col, N.J. These are all desparate teams starving for points & the B's are finding ways to win. Hopefully this trend continues right up until June.
