Wow, never heard of this. Is this even a rule? I doubt it. Theyre really trying to handcuff these enforcers now, even suggesting when is an appropriate time to put them on the ice.

That door to push the goon out is starting to open a little more.

Carlyle had last change, right? It was Carlyle's decision to line Kessel up against Scott. Why is Rolston getting the fine?

So does Rolston still get fined if Carlyle counters with Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren (if they happened to be on the bench), afterall Toronto did have the last change.

Carlyle should be getting the fine for stupidity.

I just read about this.  The NHL is now going to tell coaches who they can and cannot put on the ice?  That's bad news.  If the Leafs put a goon out also, would it have been okay?

So many bad things about this.  Just really bad.

    What's next?

NHL FINES JULIEN $1,000 FOR UNSPORTMANLIKE CONDUCT

Boston - The NHL front office has levied a $1,000 fine on Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien for unsportsmanlike conduct.  In last night's lopsided game against the New York Islanders, with the Bruins ahead 6-1, Julien double shifted his top line of David Krejci, Milan Lucic and Loui Eriksson with under two minutes to play.

"That's not how we want the games to be played", said Commissioner Gary Bettman.  "We don't need to see six, seven goal games.  These guys are professionals, but they are also people.  We don't want to keep fans away with the impression that their team is terrible."

Reached for comment, Julien was less than impressed. "F*** Bettman and f*** the league," quipped Julien.  "I'll take their fines and I'll pay them, but I'll put whomever the F*** I want on the ice at any time."

In other news, Steve Ott was fined $2,500 for saying mean things to Chris Neil at the faceoff, Jon Quick was fined $5,000 for posting three shutouts in a row ("Gotta give guys a chance", said Bettman) and 21,913 fans in Montreal received citations for booing the Toronto Maple Leafs as they entered the ice.

(please note:  This entire story is false.  If you use it as reference, you will be fined $10,000.)

There's an appeal process for players - is there one for coaches? If not, this is an example of why there should be one.

I think this is the overwhelming belief around the league that there is no place for John Scott, and is an attempt to handcuff the Sabres for A) giving him a roster spot, and B) using him to attack other players (which would be the only way to use him...)

Regardless, it is terribly misguided.  Mandatory visors, penalties for tucked in jerseys, fines for the coaches selection of players at a faceoff...??  This is getting out of hand.  Nannyism at it's worst here.

    Let em' play.

The league was just peeed off there was nothing they could to Scott, he broke no rule so they just made up this ruling.

Pretty sure this has been on the books for a little while, anyway.  Part of the "last five minutes" rules, though I don't think this one has to be last five minutes.  Same rationale as a guy getting a game for instigating with 5 or less - if the league deems a player has been put on the ice for the sole purpose of fighting/attacking other players, and it will have no impact on the outcome of the game, the league can impose sanctions on the player/coach for that decision.

It's explicitly anti-clown and not anti-fighting.  It means that bozo you keep on the bench until having him on the ice won't hurt you in terms of points can't come on and start trying to hurt people.  Or, really, he can, but it will cost you about 20 seconds of salary.

If you want clowns out of the game, this is the way to go.  Clowns fight because coaches tell them to fight.  If you fine a coach every time he sends a goon out in a situation where everyone in the building knows a fight is about to happen, coaches will stop sending out goons.  Considering the many stories from former goons about the mental impact of knowing you'll be fighting every second day, this seems like a good idea.

Wouldn't be hard to come up with a 5 on 5 ice time measure to differentiate a Thornton, who gets a regular shift, from a Scott.
