CONCUSSION EPIDEMIC; 23 AND COUNTING... EXAMPLE OF A GREAT CLEAN HIT

sidney crosby, claude giroux... talking superstars, revenue generators, guys the casual fans may tune it for.. this sport is becoming suicidal! its no longer just a hard hitting game, its a COLLISION game! plus add in sanctioned bare knuckles sideshow fights.. its just nutts! the nfl has an issue as well, but at least they give the impression of fighting the issue. look at james harrison getting suspended for one game for another blatant hit. not only was he penalized but you can bet the loss of $ and the humiliation to his team will have him making adjustments in how he head hunts. is there a similar precedence in hockey?

They talked about this during yesterday's Bs game. It was the Flyers announcers I had here in Fl.The thing was they said that half are friendly fire concussions. Meaning to date half are accidental hits by team mates or puck shots to the head. Just like what happened in yesterday's games. They all know the issue and have been doing all they can according to the announcers..
What can you do when two guys are chasing a puck one goes down and slames into the boards and gets a cc. Not much.
Sopme have said the cc have gone up when clutch and grab was removed. When the game became faster and more open. Guys are 10 mph faster today than years ago.
So what do you want to see today's game or go back to the clutch and grab era?
They also said up to the recent rash of ccs actually had gone down at the beginning of the year and in previous years.

Just a question and not a suggestion. Would reinstituting the redline help at all? |Just slow the speed by a step or two?

Posted by red75[/QUOTE]cant hurt.. an example of a nice clean hit was the hit this weekend in football involving ELVIS dumervil when he ALL SHOOK UP tommy brady. 2 YEARS AGO BEFORE all THE EMPHAsIS, FINES AND suspensions due to unnecessary collisions and concussions, tb would be out right now. the guy would have driven him thru the ground with a helmet to helmet hit then high fived and danced and likely started an all-out brawl with more taking gratuitous shots to the head. instead, brady got lifted off his feet due to the hard contact but the guy went out of his way to tilt his helmet to the side and let go of tb as he hit the ground. noone injured from a really hard hit and both guys were able to continue and not risk their long term health!

Epidemic? Concussions have been part of the game forever. Difference is that modern day medicine technology, practices, and procedures have been adopted so there for you hear about the condition(s) more often. Anyone would be naive to think that concussion diagnosis is just a "recent" occurrence.

Also, fighting may be look like the guilty suspect but if you look back to the history of the diagnosis most have been caused through body contact, not neccessarilly fights.
