Game 52 Panthers at Bruins GDT

    By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff

Good afternoon from TD Garden, where the Bruins will host Tim Thomas and the Panthers tonight.

Thomas will be in goal against Tuukka Rask. Thomas was injured for Florida’s previous visit Nov. 7. Since then, the Panthers overhauled their coaching staff, replacing Kevin Dineen with Peter Horachek.

The Bruins will be playing their third game in four days. They beat the Islanders last night, 6-3. They have scored six goals in each of their last two games.

It’s possible that Chris Kelly could return tonight. Kelly has missed the last 21 games because of a broken fibula.

    Puck drop: 7 p.m.

TV, radio info: NESN (Jack Edwards, Andy Brickley, Jamie Erdahl), WBZ-FM, 98.5 (Dave Goucher, Bob Beers)

    Records: Panthers 21-24-7, Bruins 33-15-3

    Projected Bruins lineup:

    Milan Lucic-David Krejci-Jarome Iginla
    Brad Marchand-Patrice Bergeron-Reilly Smith
    Carl Soderberg-Chris Kelly-Loui Eriksson
    Daniel Paille-Gregory Campbell-Shawn Thornton

    Zdeno Chara-Dougie Hamilton
    Matt Bartkowski-Johnny Boychuk
    Torey Krug-Kevan Miller

    Tuukka Rask
    Chad Johnson

Healthy scratches: Jordan Caron, Ryan Spooner, Zach Trotman

Story lines: Spooner didn’t play against Philadelphia Saturday because he was sick. But he practiced Sunday on Long Island and was scratched against the Islanders Monday night. Upon Kelly’s return, Spooner’s short-term future appears to be in Providence … The No. 2 line brings a six-game scoring streak into tonight’s game. Brad Marchand has seven goals and five assists during the streak … Florida's Brad Boyes is likely to be moved before the trade deadline. The ex-Bruin leads the Panthers with 13 goals. Boyes will be unrestricted at year’s end. His offensive touch would help a team looking for second- or third-line help on the wing … Florida has the worst power play in the NHL (8.8 percent) … Tonight will be the first of six games remaining on the Bruins’ schedule before the Olympic break. Five of the six will be at home … Ghislain Hebert and Chris Rooney will be the referees. Derek Amell and Brad Kovachik will be the linesmen.

Am I not mistaken that this will be TT's first start in Boston since his departure?

Ok, so on the breakout Kelly can slide over and make room for him. Soderberg is offensively minded, Kelly pulls one out of his behind every once in awhile.

Curious to see if the coaching staff saw what we saw with Soderberg at C, though.  If they did, and they're intrigued, it shouldn't be rocket science to have Kelly take draws but then switch to LW, even just defensive zone draws or if they want to protect a lead.  And having Kelly out there might actually work in Soderberg's favour - he can try and jump the drop more readily knowing the backup is Kelly.

That said, while Soderberg's FO% for the year is awful, he was 50% last night, 50% vs. the Flyers as a C.  Maybe the dentist is a quick study?

Soderberg's played center a long time.  He should be able to win faceoffs.  I like him on the wing, too though.  It's probably better at crunch time to have Kelly in the middle when one s      hift with lost coverage on a Crosby can mean the difference in a series.

Oates, thankfully there's only one Crosby, and I wouldn't want anyone not named Bergeron squaring up against him.

Curious to see if the coaching staff noticed he scored his goal coming off the RW boards.

Maybe a switch to RW ?

Was his improved play because of the position change or because .......well .........just because he played better then he has recently ?

We've also seen some pretty good games from him playing wing..........when he played with the same energy he brought to last night's game.

If he stays at center, I'm sure we'd see some clunkers ( games ) out of him the same as when he played mediocre at the wing.

I'm thinking the difference I saw what that he had the puck more often, and that seemed to energize him.  Give him the puck and let him be the linchpin of that line's attack, and you're right - I don't care where he lines up on faceoffs.

I like that Paille is still up on the 3rd line, surprised Kelly is on the 4th. And someone said you can't "just try it". Worth the experiment.

he is getting pelted right now. Not much he could do about the first goal, second one, he should have just left alone.

All four lines are playing good hockey tonight. I like this line-up. Paille seems right at home on the Swede line and Kelly is bringing a new dimension to the 4th. You can tell that Soderberg feels much more comfortable at center. Let's keep him there for awhile and see how it goes.

Lucic comes out feet moving, hitting, look how much room he has created for himself. When he plays like this, just a dominant force.
