    NHL Jerseys With Corporate Logos?

Here's an article on the business end of sports and the possibility of NHL teams selling ad space to corporations allowing their logos on team jerseys as its proven to be pretty lucrative for big European soccer teams like Man U.

We're used to logos of sports gear makers on stuff.  I wouldn't want Coca Cola, McDonald's or Best Western on a Bruin jersey. I'd like to think the league wouldn't allow the unis to resemble those below from the Swiss league regardless of the massive money involved.

I don't think it will ever happen, but I wouldn't much care if it did.  I remember being horrified by the ads on the boards and then the ads on the ice.

    Who cares.

As long as they keep all computer chips out of the puck, I'm fine with it.

I think it's inevitable.  It's a revenue stream that's sitting there and they aren't tapping it.  I'm surprised the NHLPA isn't pushing for it to push up revenues and therefore player salaries.

I guess the hold-up is what kind of revenue they might lose if they do it.  How many people who pay into the NHL coffer are going to pay less if the league allows this?  1%? 5%?

It'll happen.  Better get used to it.

With all the ads you can't find the 'a' or 'c' on the jersies, that's why the captain has to wear a different color helmet as in the picture.

Corporate sponsors are already on the practice jersies.

PLEASE DON'T - looks stupid and honestly how is ruining a jersey with 100 patches no one sees helping anyone? I've seen a thousand European games and never had the urge to run out and buy Häagen-Dazs... Most awful are the helmets with the ad right on the forehead like a dunce cap. No thanks.

I guess my question is how much would they in turn lose in sweater sales from the public? I love my B's jerseys, but I don't feel like being a walking billboard for every insurance company and car dealership on the Eastern sea board every time I put one of them on.

I wonder if its something where they would leave ads off of Jerseys made to be sold to the public and strictly have them on players' game  jerseys.

I see quite the opposite.  Every time sponsorship changes they will hav new opportunity for jersey sales.

I know you all hate soccer, but it would probably go the same way since fans are fans.  Look at the Manchester United jersey, new sponsor, new jersey sale.  And people being people they might prefer the ones with the Ford logo rather than Chevrolet and so on.  Go ahead and google for Manchester United jersies or some other big football club.

Just face it, we're all hopeless addicts.  We'll buy virtually anything.

I lost a bet in recent times and now I own a $40 something Soderberg t shirt.

Fair enough with the soccer comparison - I see an awful lot of people walking around everyday out here with "Bell" emblazoned acorss the front of their Vancouver Whitecaps jerseys.

AHL already has patches and they look just fine. At the NHL level, it wouldn't bother me to have one paid sponsor for the jerseys.

    More sponsors = more money.

I will bet in time the Bruins logo will not even appear, just all ads with the primary sponsor getting the crest.

A truly horrible scenario. I hate European soccer jerseys and the advertising overkill on Eurohockey jerseys and pants. I just hope that the clubs realize that whatever they try to gain by plastering their jerseys with ads they will in turn lose when they cannot sell as many jerseys, caps, etc. anymore. Any North American pro sport jersey still looks a lot cooler than, for example, a Real Madrid shirt - let's keep it that way.

One sponsor, like the jersey above I could live with. The other stuff, no. No wway would I want to see an original 6 jersey wtih an ad for Viagra on it.

I'm with you there. Now when I watch pre-1980s game video the boards look bare. Like something's missing. Remember the FOX puck vapor trail, NAS?

kel, the article said Chevy paid millions to have their brand on Man U's jerseys next season. Like you said if it's one, understated brand on the jersey like the Nike logo in the right shoulder area, no problem. Check out Chevy's symbol. It dwarfs the actual crest of the team.

The amount of money they would generate from the advertisers would dwarf any loss in apparel sales.

And to the guy above who said that he's not looking to run out and buy ice cream because the ice cream ad was on a jersey...that's now how this sort of advertising works.  This is about brand recognition, not direct sales.  When Ford sponsors an event, they don't want you to go out and buy a Ford the next day.  They want to you think of Ford the next time you're buying a car.

To your point, BH, Man U is about to sign a $1 billion deal with Nike. It's to be a 10 year. $70 million British pounds per.  Not to mention the $79 million they'll get from Chevrolet for space on the front of their jerseys.

Might be tough to ignore if some company comes knocking with cheque books at the ready.

If it results in a decrease of ticket prices, I may be wiiling to bend. I don't see that happening.

    Dream on!

Give it time.  The Bruins crest will be reduced to the patch just like Man United.

And ticket prices will go up.

And mark my words, the younguns will be fighting over the jersies and the old farts will be sitting around complaining that in my day the jersies weren't like christmas trees.
