Re: P-Bruin Fans: How's Caron doing?

I would say less than half a point and a negative 5 +/- rating would indicate that his P-Bruins season isn't going that well.  I looked up his stats about a week ago when people here started calling for him and I was surprised.  You would think that a player who made an impact in the NHL would dominate, or at least be a major contributor, in the AHL.

I don't know what the factors that have contributed to his poor stats are.  I haven't gotten to a game yet.  Maybe it is a confidence issue, since he was sent down, or a nagging injury.  I thought (based upon the past few years drafts) that the P-B's would be a really good team this season, but they are remarkably mediocre.  They seem to have a bunch of under achievers on the roster right now, especially in net.  Jamie Arniel seems to be having a good year, as are Zach Hammill, and Joe Colbourne, at least offensively speaking.

Re: P-Bruin Fans: How's Caron doing?

Why only the 11 games played for Caron? He wasn't here that long, was he?

Wow - these stats are nuts. How can Kampher be a (+10) while Bodnarchuck is a (-15)? Did they completely fall apart the past few weeks? Looking over the GAA and Save %, maybe that's exactly what happened.

And how many more shots Arniel has compared with the other forwards. Proves a point...shoot the puck!!!

Hope someone can chime in from Providence and give us the scoop. These confose me!

Providence should fire their coach. Defense and Goalie is weak also

Caron is a nhl calibre player already. His stats are decent in providence

Only as good as who you play with fits Caron to a T. His time with the big club proves that imo.

The only reason hes still there is because of the few borderline playing ok guys on the Bs.

Would be highly appreciated. As I said, I am more interested in evaluations that are drawn from things other than stats. His stats in Providence are surprising to the downside and I would like to know what the reason is for that as I felt he was very good with Boston.

Perhaps, as suggested, it's a matter of being as good as the guys around him, or, maybe its the style of play in the AHL, an injury, crappy linemates, loss of confidence, etc.

Re: P-Bruin Fans: How's Caron doing?

Thanks for the link asmaha. Three things I took from that article:

    1) Caron's poor number's seem to be due to a dip in confidence relating to being sent down. I am okay with that -- hockey players are humans, this one is also a kid, and disappointment is a natural response.

    2) Apparently he's beeing playing well, even though he's not producing numbers. Also, while his coach is okay with this, Caron is not. I like this too.

    3) I've said it before, and Rob Murray's comments increase my confidence that, Caron will be a Mike Knuble type player -- I know it's not legit on this board for early player comparisons. I really like this; Knuble-types are precisely the type of player every winning team needs.

Re: P-Bruin Fans: How's Caron doing?

Aside from injuries, I don't really see much movement between now and the end of the season. Best to let these young guys get live action in the AHL.

Training camp should be interesting, though. The only RFAs are Wheeler and Marchand. Given what they both make, I'd expect both to be back with the team. Ryder, Recchi and Whitfield are all UFAs, and I'd be surprised if any return.

In short, looks like there may be at least 2 forward roster positions to fill for next year, maybe more depending on Wheeler and Marchand. So many options....Caron, Hamill, Whitfield, Arniel or a trade / free agent pick up. It's a GM's dream. Plenty of guys locked up, plenty banging down the door to join the club, and some extra cash to play with.

Dead on with this observation. It's beyond be how some on this board don't see this. Even if this isn't our year, it looks like it will be soon. And to think of where we came from just a few years ago...

Re: P-Bruin Fans: How's Caron doing?

Hamill's numbers are not good.  Two goals for the #1 C?  19 points in 31 games?  For a third year AHL player who was drafted 8th overall?  The only number there that is good, and a bit bizarre frankly, is Hamill's +2.  On a team that gives up goals at a rapid clip, that's pretty impressive for a guy like Hamill.  It means he's not giving the puck away trying to make things happen offensively.

Hamill will have no excuses if he and Caron don't click.  We know Reich will work hard and retrieve the puck, so this is probably the best opportunity Hamill's ever had to work with a guy who also has a first-round pedigree and skills.  Caron is already a marginal NHLer with room to improve, so if Hamill has anything to show, now's the time.  Every year, though, Hamill starts a bit of a run at this time of year.  He was basically a ppg player for about two months last Jan/Feb before cooling off when the P-Bruins were clearly out of the playoffs.  Curious to see what they do with him when his contract's up if he does click with Caron and put up decent numbers the rest of the way.

Arniel deserves the next decent look.  No slight to Caron, but don't yo-yo him in his first year.  He earned the right to break camp in the NHL, but it was always going to be a limited audition.  Now, he needs that seasoning of a regular AHL grind.  Arniel's been there.

Re: P-Bruin Fans: How's Caron doing?

Exactly right, and Chiarelli deserves a lot of credit.

GM's can't really be evaluated by championships alone, because when the season begins the keys are handed to the coach and the players.

The best thing a GM can do is to put together a competitive Stanley Cup challenging roster season after season without falling into long-term rebuilds.  Chiarelli is clearly on that path and the future is bright.
