Phaneuf going to be a leaf for ever.

Poor Leaf fans, Phaneuf is signing a 7 year 49 mill ext to become a leaf forever. I don't see why

this guy deserves 7 mill a year, last I checked he isn't pull Chara numbers. Another crazy contract

    in the NHL.

Wow.  I would be sick if I were a Leaf fan.  $7 mil used to buy a lot more.  Good news for us.

Good timing for Phaneuf...I actually thought he would get more ... love him or hate him, you can't deny this guy plays against the top lines, logs a ton of minutes, plays in all situations, provides offence....I think he meets the criteria to warrant this pay grade....there is not much else out there that provide what he does.... He does take chances, and sometimes gets burned....which top D man doesn't ?  Anyone see Karlsson last night...I know I am in the minority here, but if the Leafs get him at this price... It's a pretty good deal for now and down the road when cap keeps going up....

I don't understand Nonis - the Leafs finally game some respectability by becoming a playoff team, and then he handcuffs the team's future growth with contracts like Clarkson's and Phaneuf's. It makes no sense.

"I don't see why they need to work out details on a NMC and No-Trade clause.

Paying Dion Phaneuf $7 million for seven years is already a no-movement clause."

"If you want to win stanley cup you can't have Phaneuf as your number 1 d-man."

And then there are the dilusional comments from Lerf fans...

    "Phaneuf is a #1 D-Man. He's a top D-man. He would have easily gotten 8M on the market. 7M is a discount."

"Fair deal. No complaints. Phaneuf has only gotten better every season he's been here."

    Oh my!

I don't think the Leafs had a choice. Who else is out there that they could get for less money? Who are they going to trade to get a better d-man. Leaf hands were tied here. Some team would've given the 3rd person talking zipperhead the same amount, or more.

I agree Nite, I also don't think he's worth 7 million, but he's not as bad as most make him out to be.

This has been precisely the explanation up here since the season began and Phaneuf appeared to be more consistently on form than off, nite.  That he had them over a barrel regarding a replacement on the market. That said I look forward to many more years of the following:

Re: Phaneuf going to be a leaf for ever.

Phaneuf isn't nearly as bad as he's made out to be here.  He's no Chara, but it's not like the Jeff Finger contract redux.  Teams need a #1 defenseman.  They aren't readily available.  He's who they have.  If he's defecient in areas, they have to build around him.  If I were a Leaf fan, I wouldn't be jumping for joy about this deal, but I wouldn't be crying in my soup either.  I think it would be more along the lines of, "Okay, so that's done."
