Phoenix trades Bryzgalov's rights to Philly

They're gonna have to do some wheeling and dealing in order to fit him under the cap. According to capgeek, even with the cap expected to increase to $62.2M next season, Philly will have $3.2M to spend on 3 roster spots, as well as Ilya. Not to mention that JVR is a RFA after next season, and at the very worst case, should receive a double in salary ($1.6M to $3.2M, but could actually get around $3.7M or so) and it'd be unwise to spend all the way up to the cap this year, especially if the cap is not projected to raise any higher in the next two years. If they attempt to sign, or they actually do sign him, say goodbye to Richards/Carter and perhaps another complementary piece. Ilya is likely to demand/receive something in the $4.5-5M area per year. -

Holmgren won't trade Richards not going to happen. Now GMs won't have to over pay for Carter knowing the Flyers are against the cap. Philly will probably shop Versteeg at the draft as well I'm sure there will be some takers he only has 3mil left at one year. -

This is pretty huge for Philly. Goaltending cost them the past few seasons. -

If the Flyers can get this guy signed, you have to think they will be one of the favourites in the East again next season. Look what they did this year with average goaltending. Bryzgalov is a huge upgrade but is yet to prove himself in the playoffs. -

No doubt, but it'll come at a cost, they'll likely have to fork over Carter and another complementary piece amongst the forward group. As of right now, they need to sign 1 defensemen and 2 forwards, as well as Ilya (if they want him). They will have $3.2M available (when the cap increases) to sign 4 players. Keep in mind, JVR is likely to see a $2M raise from his current salary as he is a RFA after next season.
Ilya will be a good get, but they'd likely sacrifice somewhere around 40 goals in order to fit him under the cap.
Even if they sign him, and lose Carter and another player to fit him under the cap, I still like our club better and have faith that PC and Cam will fill our very few open slots next season effectively via the FA market (Laich, Jokinen, etc.) and current prospects (Caron, Sauve, perhaps Hamilton/Beaulieu-if we go a puckmover at #9).
No doubt Ilya is good between the pipes, but his numbers in the playoffs the last 2 years have been AWFUL...and the word "awful" actually downplays his numbers. -

He was even worse than his numbers. Did you SEE the Detroit series? Terrible, terrible soul-sapping golas against. Not much better the previous year.
Clearly Philly has to get a goalie, but if this guy is what they get and he's costs them players like Carter, well, good for us. -

In Response to Re: Phoenix trades Bryzgalov's rights to Philly:I hope Philly enjoys overpaying Bryzgalov and then needing to dramatically overhaul a lot of the on ice personnel due to his contract bulge. Expect lots of roster turnover to accomodate the goalie. To think they could have had Thomas. If you are a Philly fan, you have to be happy with the upgrade, but at what cost?Nobody wanted Thomas last year, not even the Bruins ,so it's a different set of circumstances.

I actually like hockeybuzz idea. Name any team that wouldnt want a 40 goal scoring, young center? Lots of teams. They could easily deal Carter for a pick and prospect. They likely could add another contract they don't want as well to make it better for them.
They then sign Ilya and bring back Gagne. They have loads of young fwds. Wonder if Edmonton would deal their 1st overall for Carter. They have lots of cap space and could likely use one of their dmen as well.
Carter-Carle

Edmonton's 1st and Cogliano. -

In Response to Re: Phoenix trades Bryzgalov's rights to Philly:In Response to Re: Phoenix trades Bryzgalov's rights to Philly : Not talking about last year specifically even though that is flat out FALSE. Philly wanted Thomas, they just couldn't agree to terms. Now, Philly has their hands tied to appease fans, but Bryzgalov's contract may tilt their cap structure. And I am certainly not talking about an injured Thomas, post surgery, either. Everyone knew Thomas was coming off the hip injury. The guy only has been in All Star games, was a possible starter for Team USA, etc. As if that was not an upgrade over Leighton? I mean, what planet are you on here? The only reason Rask took the reins is because Thomas wasn't 100%. Philly knew this and felt comfortable he was healthier by the end of last year. Philly couldn't agree on compensation in the other direction and it ruined their chances in the Cup. Again. Thomas would have been fine by the end of last year. He lost his job, deservedly so but not for talent or quality, but injury. Philly is clueless when it comes to ananlyzing goaltending options. Stop acting like the deal wasn't close. It was. Philly wussed out and paid for it. Now they have to cave into the demands of Bryzgalov. He holds all the leverage now. Milbury just said his agent is arguably the worst agent to deal with: 08:44 AM ET 06.08 | For the rights to a prospect and a few picks, the Flyers are now free to negotiate with Ilya Bryzgalov . The Flyers will have until July 1 to hammer out a deal with Bryzgalov, 31, the mint of this summer's free-agency class. Bryzgalov helped the Coyotes to 78 wins over the past two seasons. It is believed that Bryzgalov, through Edmonton-based agent Rich Winter, of the Sports Corporation, is seeking a deal north of the $4.5 million he earned last season -- and for a significant term. A source close to the situation told the Daily News that Bryzgalov is seeking a 5-year deal worth somewhere from $30 million to $32 million, which would make him the fifth highest-paid goaltender in the NHL. "We'll see what we can do," Holmgren said. Read more: http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/288770-bryzgalov-wants-at-least-30-million?sct=nhl_t2_a6&eref=fromSI#ixzz1OiizOlJz

I don't think last year when Rask took over the reins many knew about Thomas being injured. The popular opinion was that he was washed up.I think it is not farfetched to think that TT could have been had by almost any team that was willing to accomodate his salary.Lucky for us there were no takers and we now have the best goalie in the league playing for us in the finals. -

Crazy talk. Carter is a 6'3" 200lb, 40 goal 1st line center who is 26 yrs old. Did I mention crazy talk.
Matt Carle. 40 pt dman and is 27.
Did I mention crazy talk. Realize what Edmonton needs. a big 1st line center and a top 4 dman.
I think Philly would hang up to be honest. -

Unless Gagne accepts a near league-minimum contract, then he's not coming back to Philly. They NEED to save money to give a raise, which will likely be a $2M increase to JVR. By getting rid of Carter, they'd have $8.5M to spend on 3 forwards, 1 d-man and Ilya. Ilya will likely take up $5M of that. 4 spots needed to be filled with $3.5M to spend, and if they spend up to the cap, they better hope that the cap raises again after next year, or they'd possibly have to trade some more players to re-up JVR. -

Gagne never wanted to leave Philly. They can create room for him. Trade Carter and a dman and they have room.
Cap will rise some. They are tight for sure. I think HNIC said this on their insider. -

Flyers will ruin him like they've done with a string of goalies. Pull him after 2 goals and ruin his confidence. Flyers are the dirtbags of the NHL, next to the Nuks of course.
