    Pogge instead of Rask ?

And a big thank you goes out to John Ferguson Jr.

TORONTO - The trade that sent Tuukka Rask to the Boston Bruins could have been made without the emerging superstar involved.

According to those close to the deal, the Bruins would have happily accepted young goaltender Justin Pogge in exchange for Andrew Raycroft.

The problem at the time was, Leafs general manager John Ferguson was uneasy about moving Pogge, wasn’t convinced Rask was better and wouldn’t agree to move Pogge because he had won the gold medal playing for Team Canada at the world junior championships that year.

Ferguson told his senior staff that “we’d get killed for trading the gold medal goalie,” so he agreed to make the deal with Boston, which was questionable at the time and looks horrendous in retrospect.

Nice post, interesting how things went down behind the scenes on the Leafs side.  Not sure if I am buying that the B's were close to releasing Raycroft angle, though.

Rask is emerging as an elite keeper, while Pogge plays in Italy for Ritten Renon.  Funny that Raycroft also played in Italy for Milan this year.  Reimer should make sure he has an updated passport.

Under the heading of "What Might Have Been!" eh, Chowda?  As you know the hype surrounding Pogge's arrival in Toronto was big especially after his outstanding play for the junior nationals in them winning gold.

As it turned out perhaps we'd be listing his name among the likes of Daniel Berthiaume, John Blue, Matt Delguidice and Hannu Toivonen as goalies who didn't make their mark with the Bruins.

The B's system may have turned Pogge into a star while the Leafs system killed Rask's potential.

Good point.  Back in '06 the Leafs had McCabe, Belak, Ian White, Kaberle, Pavel Kubina and Hal Gill on defense in front of Raycroft.  That team scored 258 but allowed 269.  You're right.  It could have been a baptism under a lot of fire.

Are there any GMs that haven't been fleeced at one time or another ?

36 is very young to be a GM in any sport. A Calder trophy winner for an unkown european goalie prospect who didn't have a ton of expierence in North America...hmm. Tough to criticize but again if I ever get to meet Jeff Gorton he gets a high five and a glass of his favorite whiskey or bourbon.

Wasn't it Rask against Pogge in that World Junior Final?

That is possible although Rask's athleticism and compete level might have meant he was one of those guys who excelled once he got out of the leafs organization.

Fair enough, San.  Aside from the Rask/Raycroft deal, some of JFJ's picks are presently on the Leafs' roster.  He drafted Reimer in the 4th round in 2006, Carl Gunnarsson in the 7th round in '07 and grabbed Nik Kuleminin in the second round also in 2006.

Toronto is a goalie graveyard. You have to be good and a little crazy to win there (see; Ed Belfour). Good for obvious reasons. A little crazy to shut out all the ridiculous pressure, to scare people away to an arms length distance.

In Toronto, a goalie is only as good as his last save.

To that end - the 'crazy' one - Tim Thomas would be the perfect pick-up for the Leafs.

I was just going to post this.

Sometimes fans who look back to compare players' careers forget the organization's input and their development programs. The coaches system contributes to the player's  learning as do the people they play with...think Recchi and Jagr.
