    Rangers v. Caps-Series Thread

I did not realize this game was going to start at the crack of dawn over here in the West.

Ovechkin scoring to make it 1-0 Caps.

NYR gentle giant Anisimov ties it up. Good net presence and Laich just couldn't handle the puck on the backcheck. Game on.

Caps 0-2-3 defensive system allows the Rangers to consistently make it to at least center ice unhindered. What a lame configuration.

Wow, horrible hit by Ovechkin on Girardi. So much for trying to play the puck in the offensive zone to get a scoring chance hey OV?

Caps ahead 2-1. Obviously the 0-2-3 defensive scheme works.

That one will draw some attention from Shanny.

I hope you are right Kel. That was so unnecessary.

Rangers tie it up. Gaborik left alone, how does that happen. Holtby lackluster again when there is an actual quality scoring chance against him.

Not much Holtby could do on that one. Backstom is having a real strong game.

Holtby thought it was going to be icing and gave up on the puck, a Ranger got to the puck first, pass out front, goal. This is the playoffs, no time to assume anything, but Holtby is a rookie.

    True.

Fun fact: old friend and future UFA Dennis Wideman has 0 points and is a -7 in 11 playoff games while on the top D pairing for the Caps. He is currently getting paid $4.5 million this year. Oddly enough Hunwick is also a UFA come July 1st.

Awful play by Wideman on the tying goal.  Would have been icing on the Rangers if he makes any attempt to race towards the puck.  Instead he loafs, and let's the guy blow by him.  He then he has a chance to either play the puck handler behind the net or take  the open guy in front of the net.  He does neither, and watches as a pass goes right through him, for an easy tip in.  Dumb, effortless play.  Can't imagine Hunter can continue to play this guy.

Nice save by Henrik on Backstrom. Could have been the game right there.

Well, that's it. Caps win 3-2 based inpart on a fortuitous late period PP and a blown non-call on Knuble for delay of game.

No disrespect to the Rangers, they're a really good team with a strong commitment on the defensive end, but am I the only one who finds them rather boring to watch (lack of scoring depth-really only 3 forwards who strike the least bit of fear into opponents, diving every 2 seconds to block shots, playing conservative, etc.)?

Yep, as are the Caps which is why this series is so painful to watch. The Yotes/Preds series is also as boring. At least only two of these 4 teams will move on.

What was the difference in plays where Bolyle had his stick chopped out of his hands with no penalty in the third period and a similar penalized action by Hagelin in which Green blasted the winner on the resulting PP?

Ugh, got the CBC feed. You can tell these aren't the usual teams for Craig Simpson and Jim Hughson. A bit amateurish so far. Healy seems happy his Rangers are still in it though.

Pretty weak goal on Holtby by career AHLer Strahlman. Needs to be better than that

For sure its nice to not hear Hughson scream "great save Luongo" 6 times a period.I notice he hardly ever says it for Lundquist or Holtby, must be his pet call for Leaky Lu.
