Re: Savard's name on the cup

Prior to 1977 only players who had completed the Stanley Cup playoffs were eligible. Today, players appearing in 41 regular-season games or one Stanley Cup Final game for the championship team have their names engraved on the Cup. The NHL makes exceptions for players who do not meet the standard because of injury or other extenuating circumstances.

Unfortunately, this means Savard might get his name on there.

I would vote for it.  He's a part of the team, a sympathetic figure due to the injuries, and (I think) somebody that the team rallied around.

Yeah, I feel for the guy but two goals and eight assists over 25 games isn't exactly a significant contribution. Plus, let's not forget that he was partially involved in the too-many-men on the ice debacle against Philly last year. I really hope he can put his concussion problems behind him, but the team's centers proved more than capable.

Help me out here, folks.  I really want to understand.  For someone's name to be on the Cup, I feel a player should have had a helping hand in winning the Cup.

During his 25 games, when he went 2-8-10 on his average 19 shifts a game, while having the highest average of powerplay time (he's the specialist, you know) of any forward for the season, which contributions of Savard's helped the team win the Cup?

I'd say the biggest help he offered was going on LTIR and allowing the B's the flexibility to make their deadline moves.

    You nailed it.

With him if he returned to his PP specialist form maybe we win, maybe not, but with his replacements we do win, so without him we do not win.

I've never called you out NAS and I've stayed away from the negative tone of these boards for the entire playoffs - wishing that the Bruins would have a positive result.  But ... the Stanley Cup, this year, was won as a team and the Bruins epitomize the idea of a group of lunchpail players working for each other.  Witness Ference buying the ugly jacket and then the team deciding to not award it after Game 3 because it was Horton's, the team putting Horton's gear in his stall for Game Seven, Horton bringing Boston Garden melted ice and pouring it on the Rogers ice to "help" the team.  Let the team decide whether or not to include Savard on the Cup.  This is not about you and your decided opinions.

I fully agree with most of this!  The team will decide it.  A lot of people have opinions on it, however, including me.  Some people think his name should be on there.  I don't.

I'm asking those in favor to explain what Savard did to help this team win the Cup.

He put his life on the line to win the cup is enough for me.  It would be disgusting not to include him if it can be done.

He tried to play when he wasn't ready last years playoffs and he was not ready this year either, yet he played because they were hurting so bad, regardless of the jeopardization to his own health. They lucked out with replacements getting er done, he was and is a part of this team.

What about Rask?  He only played in 29 games this season.  Therefore, he does not make the qualifications...or does his dressing and being on the roster count?

I see both sides of this and won't lose sleep either way.  But I think to have your name on the Cup you should either have contributed to winning the championship OR have had that opportunity taken away from you by injury.

Savard was certainly a part of this team until the injury.  We could debate all day whether that injury actually hurt or helped them, but I hate to see a regular roster guy kept off the Cup because of injury (as opposed to trade, demotion, benching, or whatever).

team is a team. speculating on whether we win the cup with him or not is pointless. we have no idea. the guy is a part of the team and suffered a catastrophic injury in the line of duty for the team. what harm does bring it if his name is on there? does it cheapen it somehow? the guys career is probably done and pointing out his contribution or lack thereof is callous. let the organization decide what is best.

Re: Savard's name on the cup

Savard did not contribute much to the cup.  Maybe he helped them with their regular season standings, maybe they would have been better off without him.  That said, having his name on the cup could contribute to the next one.  It would help to show that the Bruins don't leave anyone behind, especially those that go down because of injury.  It helps to foster the culture of a team.  Next year, as the players battle through the season, they will know that even if they blow an ACL and MCL in December, they are still a part of the group.  Give it all, we will remember your contributions and commitment.

No disrespect, but I don't think the Bruins will give a rats behind what you think! Sometimes you go overboard with your bias opinions NAS! The guy wasn't on the team because he was concussed. Where's your freaking beat in that sometimes lame butt heart of yours!

In 1970 The Boston Bruins included Ted Green on the cup, eventhough he didn't play all season due to a skull fracture.
And what if Detroit didn't include Vladimir Konstantinov on their cup?
One of the classiest moves by a franchise ever.
