If we are talking about leaders as captains of Stanley cup teams pauly's statement is pretty accurate. Up until Lidstrom's Red Wings won the cup there were no European born and raised captains that had won the cup. There have been only two. Lidstrom and Chara.

Here's a list of the Cup champs and who their captain was.

Your comparison chart is not fair for two reasons:

1 - It includes too many years.

2 - The captains are not always the leaders but often the veterans. Especially in the case of the Europeans that they hesitate to name captain because they have so many problems at their arrival to communicate with others players.

    Re: The sisters

Teams can have european players on their team and win cups. But the first european captain to win a stanley cup happened in 2009, so i dont think its fair to pretend that europeans have always been winning cups as the absolute leaders of their team. The only two euro captains have won a cup are chara and lidstrom. i see them as exceptions that prove the rule that typically north american leaders are superior.

This is the Stanley cup winners and captains since the trophy has existed. Should have I deleted all but the last 4 years to suit the discussion in favour of Euro captains winning the cup ? No matter how many years I put up, it will still only show Chara and Lidstrom.

And thanks for #2 even though it is common knowledge. I was just referring to captains who had won the cup.

The Europeans didn't start to take roster spots for real, until after the Summit Series of 72. It's a no brainer that there no Europeans names before this, unless you want to call those French names of the Habs as imports ??? I'm all right with that...
