    What about Ovechkin?

Thinking outside the box a bit... Yes, this is crazy by all accounts and purely reactionary, but just what if....the B's shocked the world and traded for Ovechkin.  I know his defensive skills are suspect and his contract sucks royally, but he's a threat offensively everywhere on the ice and can also bang.  Is there a way this could work?  If there was ever a forward that I would take and sacrafice some of the defensive liability, it would be him.  Not sure how $ would exchange to make it fit.

Just for comparison. Ovechkin cap hit per year $9,538,462.  Iginla is a $7,000,000 but expires this year.

Long term, I would do it if the Caps cushioned the cap hit blow. It would be like paying Ovechkin, Horton's $ plus a little more once he walks next year.

If the Caps did not cushion the blow, the Bruins also have the option of playing dirty by treating him like a rental at the prorated price, and then pull a Gomez exception on his azzz for next year and let him walk.  Could they do this within the new CBA?

This would be the Bruins version of going All-In for this year.

Yes it is. Indeed. However, in terms of offensive talent as compared to Jarome, this would be a fit.  And if the B's were willing to spend prorate $ on Iginla, then...

you realize that when you buy out a players contract, you still have to pay them right. the new buy outs that are allowed in the off season pays then 100% i believe, and removes the cap hit -900K. so there is a 0.0% chance of ovechkin being bought out by any team.

Exactly what is the new exception rule that will allow teams to become cap compliant for next year?

Anything can happen.  Different sport, but the LA Dodgers spent millions on a very improbable, aliens landing, scenario, and the Sox are now rebuilding.

Getting back to hockey...If the Caps wanted to unload Ovechkin, they might think of creative ways to do so (such as throwing in some $-not outlandish)  If the Bruins wanting a scoring threat like Jarome, they might think of creative ways to do so.  It was very improbable that the Penguins would go after Jarome after they inked Morrow and Murray, but guess what---it, the unlikey happened.  The aliens landed.

People are talking about St. Louis and Streit---and these are probably AS more improbable of happening.  You never know.

These same aliens landed when Gretzgy was traded.  Anything can happen.

HAHAHA, its kind of funny how different people enjoy different aspects of the sport.  I personally love the deadline and all related speculation.  But then again, Im a weirdo.

When I play NHL 2011 (most recent one I have) for XBOX, I refuse to play a game in my season.  I want to see how I do as a GM, and therefore feel that actually playing the game is cheating.  If I do play, its only either a) the all-star game or b) an exhibition outside my dynasty.

    Cheers.

Earlier thread about this Board Being Lame is what I will start.  You seem to forget very recent history in our own town when Joe Thornton was traded out of the blue.  Clearly you need TSN or ESPN to list possible trade candidates for you to have it be acceptable.  I'm ok with compelling, intelligible, arguments being made back...but quick jabs back without any inkling of hockey history knowledge is what is laughable.

Joe Thornton has a well-documented history of disappearing in the playoffs - Ovie had one subpar season and seems to have righted the ship lately. No way McPhee will trade him.

    Re: What about Ovechkin?

Luc, who cares about his defensive skills when you have the offensive skils he has?  Did Gretzky or Lemieux have defenseive skills?  Did Brazil tell Pele to stop trying to score so much and start being responsible defensively?  No, no and no.

Having said that, rest assured that if Ovy was Canadian he would not be criticized like he is by the "hockey nation" and media.  They will do anything to belittle Ovy to make Crosby look even better.  No doubt Crosby is the best player in the world right now but what has he really accomplished?

    Rookie of the year?  No
Stanley Cup?  He was injured and Malkin was the MVP
Gold Medal?  Had a weak tournament on a stacked team

So to answer your question, Yes I would love Ovy on the B's team and if I was him I would ask to be traded out of Washington because I don't like how their trying to change him instead of changing whats around him.  Imagine Ovy with Patrice Bergeron... Defensive problem solved.

    I hear ya MattBS

Not out of the realm of affordability if you add Horton at 4 mill., Ference at 2.25 mill., and maybe Caron coming off the books.  If the Caps could eat a some of his annual salary, then you are extremely close in numbers.  You could afford him this year due to the prorated rate.  Then the B's would not have to worry about a scoring winger/banger to replace Horton.  Plus, Horton's and Lucic's defense is not all that stellar but they don't get a bum rap for their DZone play.

No luc, I don't need TSN or ESPN to tell me who might be avaialble before I'd think it possible. Nor do I need you to tell me what's possible. Ovie coming to Boston in fact is very possible. IN fact, I agree with you. I'm sure it will happen! The very next time Washington is on the schedule to play the B's at the Garden.

Anything is possible and when I see Ovy lately he doesnt look like a happy camper.  He's not having fun in Capital land, there is no way he would go to a Canadian team so B's would be as good a choice as any.

Just doing a little more research on this one and a recent article suggests why there might be some motivation for Washington to trade Ovechkin now as opposed to later...

Interesting read, luc. If Washington trades him it won't be to Boston IMO. Cap hit aside (maybe Washington eats some of it) I don't think he's the kind of player for what the Boston management has built here.
