What is Kaberle's next contract worth?

Re: What is Kaberle's next contract worth?

One of the reasons that Toronto dealt Kaberle, is because that there was too much of a difference between what they wanted to extend him at and what his agent was looking for...therefore I'm thinking he is looking for something in the $5 mil range, or something long term.
As an ex-agent, PC has a history of over paying players to keep them happy (only to hand cuff him later with salary cap issues), so I would not be surprised to see Kaberle get that much.  The B's paid a lot for him, so they probably don't want it to end up a rent-a-player situation.

Said it on another post. Regardless of cap issues, I think Kaberle's agent will want Byfuglien money for 4-5 years. Last contract combined with a unique and valuable skill set on PP will make him a tasty morsel at UFA feeding frenzy on July 1.

Re: What is Kaberle's next contract worth?

Kaberle was def looking for 5 million per year or if at 4.5 million with an extra year imo.

Lidstrom who is still probably the best d in the league at his age makes 6 million a season now but used to make closer to 7.

Kaberle's agent probably will state this in his argument why Kaberle should be worth x amount of dollars for x amount of years.

I find that guys like Bourque, Lidstrom, Visnovsky, Rafalsky who are excellent on PP's and not a liability in their own ends have long hockey shelf lifes.

If Kaberle falls into this group, then 5 years for 4.5-5 million a season could end up being a bargain. I'm sure he will score more than 40 points even if he is 37, but my concern would be his defensive capabilities with age.

What the market will bear Kaberle will be overpaid and hopefully it will make Chiarelli jettison some overpaid players on the Bruins this summer to make room for Tomas.

Byfuglien is younger with his best years ahead of him.Kaberle should be starting to slowly decline at his age.The situations are different enough that I hope the money will be too.

I hope so, too.

Unfortunately I am also hoping for PC to stop overpaying players; I am hoping for Claude Julien to realize that it's better to take the game to the other team than trying not to lose; I am hoping for Zdeno Chara to finally become a great team leader, and I am hoping for Nathan Horton to re-discover his scoring touch (well, maybe getting hungry will do in his case), preferably while they're all still with the Bruins.

Re: What is Kaberle's next contract worth?

Let me see, Kaberle in the last 6 seasons is  #2 in D scoring behind Lidstrom.. Playing for one of the worst franchises in history...He is currently the 30th highest paid D man in the league ? which is a farce when you look at some of the dogs ahead of him ie Bouwmeester at $6.6 mil....He took a home town discount to stay with the Leafs after they gave awful McCabe more than 5.5 mil per and basically slapped TK upside the head... Yet , some on here believe he will sign sub $4-5 mil per year ?  Ok, when the cow flies over the moon !!

I hope that PC does pay him what he is worth..This guy has been undervalued for a long time with no complaints...He is a points producer, and a PP specialist.. I don't see this guys numbers dwinding at all, actually, I see them increasing due to playing with much better team and players... Didn't Gonchar get 5.5 mil per /5 years this past season ? I know which one I would rather have...

I'm not arguing any of the many good points you've made.I'm only saying his situation is much different than Byfugliens.I wouldn't think it high if he signs for 5m average over 5 or 6 years(prefer 3 or 4 years though).

Nice analysis of his market value. You could have also mentioned the obscene salary his former teammate Phaneuf is collecting for his performance so far in Toronto. I agree that 5M is the starting point for a 4-5 year contract. Anything less and PC is a true snake oil salesman.

Worry Pbergeron, this was NOT his big deal.   Next (and last) deal will be his big deal.

He's on a homer's discount contract right now.  I'll be shocked if he doesn't get at least $20-22 million over 4 years.

Good thread.

Seeing as he's in all likelihood looking for his last big contract, if the B's can get him for 4 years at 4.5, you would have to think that is money fairly and wisely spent.

Don't worry though, I'm sure the first time he coughs one up that ends up in the back of the B's goal, we'll all be saying 3 years at 2.5 max!

Hey LRH , good to read your comments as always .. thanks for tuning PB in on reality ..   I  agree, those numbers are about right on what is going to take to sign Kaberle.. The question is does PC end  up resigning him ?  Considering what he potentially gave up you would think so..  guess the next three months will see the impact Kaberle will have on this team...

Ryder is swing man when Savard decides what to do. If Savy gives it 1 more shot then Ryder is gone to make cap room. Kabby get's structured deal [PC loves these] 5 yrs: 5, 5, 5, 4, 3.5 -near same salary as current. Recchi money used towards Marchand...and maybe a free agent...could even bring Stuart back UFA!!

If PC can stretch out to 5 years to save on the cap, I can him see doing something like that.

I can't imagine PC would give up what he did just for a rental.  I could be wrong, but it would seem a steep price to pay if that was the case.

Kabby could do much worse then ending up in Boston and I'm sure they'll work something out, but he has a lot of leverage and there are other teams willing to pick him up (San Jose was the rumour we heard up here).  Montreal would be another place I can see him going to too if he gets to UFA.

There will be teams willing to pony up money for him if he gets to UFA unless PC can sign him before that.

Kabby is a really good fit in Boston.

Re: What is Kaberle's next contract worth?

I agree w/ Love Real Hockey.  I see a 4 yr contract at ~5M / yr, but with an extra year tacked on to get the cap hit down.  The NHL is against egregious cap hit manipulation, but I think they'll be okay with 1 (or even 2) "moot" years tacked on.

I'm thinking a 5 yr / 21 million, like this:

6,6,4,4,1

He , of course, doesnt play the fifth year.

In terms of dollars paid: 4 years of hockey at 5 M per

In terms of cap hit: 4 years of hocket at a cap hit of 4.2M per

too bad for him he took a discount because number two defensemen don't get 5 million

Really PB.. looks to me these second rate guys must have wonderful agents then...

Jay Bowmeester - $7mil
Brian Campbell - $7mil
Kimmo Timonen  $7mil
Ed Jovanovski - $6mil
Brian Rafalski  - $6mil
Roman Hamrlik -5.5 mil
Ron Hainsey    -$5 mil
Drewski, we've missed you, but can you give me an example of a number 2 d man signing for that much?
Posted by pbergeron37
No , I cannot. To be honest, I didnt even know what Kaberle made before I started hearing the Kaberle for Savard rumors that surfaced in August.

I do know this though:

I cannot even count the number of times I've heard an NHL GM mention the term "puck moving defenseman" in the last two years.  This means that Kaberle's skill set is in high demand.

I also know that while there are a lot of guys who are deemed puck moving defenseman (i.e. Matt Hunwick), very few of these guys are proven like Kaberle.  This means that Kaberle's skill set is in short supply.

Short supply + high demand = bidding war.  I'd give Kaberle the contract mentioned in my above post.  Not because I think that is what #2 defensemen should make, but because that is the number where (IMO) supply meets demand and I think he's worth it.
