Tony left because memphis offered him 4 years and he jumped at it before the celtics could even make an offer. We didn't even get a chance to retajn him -- which I'm sure we would have tried to do.

Tony Allen also wanted to start and that was not going to happen at the time behind RA and PP.  Would DA have matched Memphis' offer - don't know.  Also, not sure it would have mattered... TA had his ring and wanted to start and that wasn't going to happen on that team.  Everything can't always be DA and Doc's fault.

You are right.  Danny has said many times that he should have negotiated with TA before he was able to sign with another team.  I have read many times that he regrets allowing Tony Allen to leave the Celtics.  It was a big loss for the Celtics.

True - but that's because Danny screws up with how he treats his vets during renegotiation time. He screwed up multiple negotiations and allowed good players to leave.   Danny made a great move to get KG, and Ray and a good move to get Rondo.  Green was a good move and I'm hoping Sully was a good move.   SO many others were bad moves.  He's hitting about 35% !!

Only an attention wh0re tool like CC needs his 'peers' to 'explain' things to him. A normal humble clueless fan deserves people to take the time to explain the obvious reasons TA left the C's.

A gossping mental midget like CC is a troll desperate for attention and to stir the pot. don't waste your time educating this loser.

    2. Is this good or bad compared to other GMs?

Tony Allen playing at allstar levels? I'll admit havent been keeping up with him a whole lot since he left but I don't think so. Don't get me wrong I love TA and he is a very good player, but he is not an allstar.

how quickly we forget.. believe it was 2006 before he went off for that dumb after the whistle dunk and shredded his knee for the second time. he was the BEST player on the team (better than pp) for like 20 games.. was shooting over 50%, attacking the hole relentlessly, averaging 18 -20 points per game, and hitting the mid ranger with regularity.. semmed like the sky was the limit. but once he got back and we had the big 3, all that was no longer neeeded and doc wanted the defensive specialist. even in memphis, he goes thru stretches in games where he's a very capable offensive player. finishes and attacks well with great hangtime and body control.

tony is a great example of a guy who got stoppped by stereotype and for playin on elite offensive teams (gasol, conley and randolph dont leave many shots out there for others).. u put TA with the knicks with offensive freedom and those jabros are beating the pacers and he's the second leading scorer at 17.5 and a potential all-star. just needed a coac to believe in him and give him some freedom. tony is a WINNER, a robert horry, bruce owen, kenny smith, mark jackson type glue guy! too many intangibles..

Better than Paul Pierce?  Over the course of Allen's career how many clutch shots has he made or even been called on to make by coaches who see him every day? I agree that he brings defense and energy to a team, but to put him into a category with Pierce is patently absurd.  As an defensive-minded guard, he has fewer steals per game, Pierce doubles his assists per game, and of course because of the position difference, Pierce has outrebounded him.  Tony Allen is a good role player, which is why he wasn't going to start here and why Ainge stupidly didn't talk to him.  Allen is a good part for a good machine - but he carries no one.

In the 06-07 season TA avergaged 11.5 pts a game for the season. To be fair however, he was increasing his scoring as the season went on and even put up a 30 pt game. But as another poster pointed out, no way was he better than PP, and 11 pts per game is not what an allstar averages, unless another statistic (or multiple) are amazing.

that's not what i heard at the time.  i heard that allen wanted to come back here and that ainge was not willing to offer anything much over the vet min and NEVER EVEN MADE AN OFFER.  for the defensive work allen did on KOBE and LEBWRONG, it was stupid for us to let him go.  he's been a valuable member of memphis' team in the same sort of role he was here ever since.

and in case nobody here has their head on straight the RAY ALLEN AS SIXTH MAN PROJECT that never happened until ray's last few games in boston, SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED in 2009.  period.  end of story.  we needed to mix things up and bring a bench unit with more than just one (davis) offensive punch to it in order to remain decidedly elite.  we failed to do it and it cost us another championship.

MORE STUPID PERSONNEL MGT by ainge

Re: all D team: ALLEN > BRON > BRADLEY! tell me again y he left...

instead we wind up with marquis daniels instead of tony allen, a guy who could get injured looking at indian feathers in an antique shop in cambridge.  and, basically, marquis did just that for three years here.  allen was the better player of the two and even though he had some injury history, has been far more durable than daniels was.  and you could split tony allen b/t the 2 and the 3 because of his skill set even though he was only 6-4 in height he could play D on people 6-6 and lebwrong was 6-9 and tony bothered him.

all in all a horrifically DUMB move to just let the guy walk.  there was no shortage of minutes he could have played.

Acie I agree with a lot of your response. I wasn't going to jump on this thread but...

TA was never a team player..he sort of thought too much of his offense. He was and is a great defenseve player as you have suggested! TA was never a fan favorite because he had an aloof attitude and considered fans beneath him. I don't have any idea as to his team mate/locker room attributes.

Ta was finally coming back when he was traded but not quite. DA wasn't willing to step up to three years but offered two in light of his history and injury.

If TA had been willing to accept two years he would have been an awesome backup at the 2 and three and would be possibly starting now. He would also be making much more than next years 3.3m in Memphis with Boston. Too bad big loss for both! Can you imagine RR, Bradley, KG,TA  and TW. Pure conjecture..

    Best!
