After we lost Sully, KG was our frontcourt.

Too much of a load for him to carry.

Spurs have been able to successfully rebuild around (hence rejeuvenate) their big 3.

Our rebuilding efforts, not so much.

Looks like KG was paid higher than Duncan. Usually the better, more valuable player gets paid the most.... and since your look back period is extensive and over a long period of time, stands to reason its not a fluke statistic.

Can only conclude teams employing these two players felt KG was worth more money than Tim..

Spurs are a small market team that has a unique situation.  They have  it all going for them over a number of years from great GM to great coach to great fans to multiple great players like Robinson, Elliott, Parker, and Ginoblie, to go with the greatest Power Forward to EVER play the game.  They got a lot for the dollar on every player.   Whether its McHale, Malone, Barkley, DeBusscher, KG, or anyone else - NO ONE gave as much for the dollar as Duncan.

Stop blaiming it on KG.  You can make the SAME statements about every other power forward when you try to compare them to Duncan.  He in incomparable!

KG is hall of fame and did more than Malone and Barkley, just not as much as Duncan.  That's nothing to be ashamed of.

Re: Another Finals Appearance For Duncan

KG is not on the same level as Bird and Duncan.  Silly argument.   He's absolutely a GREAT player and I love KG, but compared to Bird and Duncan?  he's one tier below them.  KG is, however, as good "overall", as McHale.   he's not the inside scorer of McHale, but was a better outside scorer and team defender and the leader of his teams.  He's also lasted longer and while amazingly thin, he's been amazingly durable over so many years.   Being as good as McHale and Barkley and better than Malone in my opinion....is pretty darned special.

Bird, Duncan, Magic, and Michael, however, are in a different world than all the above guys.

Duncan is great.  Pop is the best coach in the league.  Parker is in his prime.  The supporting cast is very well built.  If a TEAM can beat Miami, that's them.

They are going to let their big 3 retire with a Spurs jersey on.  Respect.

It would be great to see the Spurs win another championship this year.

I agree especially since Duncan is 37 and Ginobili 35(hmmm is KG 37 and PP 35 ?). Also, I believe they can beat the Heat if the Pacers don't do it before them.

We are similar to the Spurs in a few aspects. The 4 oldest guys are future Hall of Famers. Duncan & KG are both 37 but difference is that Duncan is a better Center and can mix it up with other basher type Centers and also can play PF too and hit the 10-15 ft jump shots. KG may be a quicker & better defender but his offense is about 1/2 of Tim's.  PP and Ginobili are both 35 and can drive to the basket and hit 3s. Rondo is probably a better playmaking guard than Tony Parker and a better rebounder but Tony is in the scoring class with Paul, Westbrook, Rose etc. The rest of our teams are probably the same quality---theirs a bit better.  The big difference why the Spurs are going to the finals, other than we didn't have Rondo for 1/2 a season, PP turned into a turnover machine & KG's scoring productivity declined, is that Popovich could be a better coach than Doc !!!

If things had gone right with the ping pong balls Pitino would have drafted Duncan with teh 1st pick.

The Spurs will not blow a 2-0 series lead 2 years in a row.

Duncan scored 6 of the Spurs' 8 points in OT. He delivered when the team needed him the most.

The difference between Duncan and the Spurs and KG and the Celtics is Tim Duncan doesn't need another big man like Kendrick Perkins, Marcin Gortat, or Samuel Dalembert to be the team's enforcer. What that translates into is the Spurs don't need an additional 8-10m in cap space for another big man.

First, not true about needing another big man.  Duncan has had Robinson, Nesterovich, and now Splitter (who starts).  So, Duncan plays with another big man.  You're distorting your facts to make your point.

No need to distort the facts because no one will argue with the fact that Duncan is the best power forward to ever play the game.  Wheher its Barkley, McHale, Malone or anyone else - no one carries a team like Duncan.  So, why pick on KG?  He's not different than everyone else - not as good as the best ever.  So what?   Pierce is not as good as Michael Jordan.  DJ is not as good as Oscar Robertson.   So what?

Bird needed McHale and Parish.  Magic needed Jabbar, Worthy, and Scott.   Duncan needs Parker (who is the MVP of that team, by the way).  Even Michael needed Pippen and others.   Why in the world do you think KG is going to win without a healthy Pierce?

You keep making the same old argument, Fierce, and its not a rational one.  We all get that you think G should be someone different but you have to get over it.  He is NOT a big center and he's not as young as he was in his prime.  Between the two, he is NOT going to be a 25 point, 15 rebound big man making shots inside.  That does NOT negate the fact that he is a great, HOF player.

    In response to Fierce34's comment:

It's official, Spurs are in the Finals.

At 37 years old, Duncan can join the elite club of MJ, Bill Russell, and Jabbar as players 35 or older to lead their respective teams to a championship.

Wrong again but who is really surprised at that.

Duncan cannot join that club since he hasnt won the championship...but, if the Spurs do win the title this year, why are you insisting DUncan is the guy leading them to it???

Most knowledgable basketball people claim Tony Parker is the guy leading the Spurs this season... Wasnt it Tony that got 86 MVP votes to Duncans 65 this season??

Cmon fierce, stop embellishing and revising history... Tony Parker has been leading the Spurs... heck, did you miss last nights close out game vs the Grizz??  Here, have a look:

"Tony Parker scored a game-high 37 points and had six assists to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 93-86 win over the Memphis Grizzlies Monday night at FedExForum, giving them a sweep in the Western Conference finals"

    Glad I could help.

    What a fool you are!

    Check my post again.

I said Duncan CAN join the elite club.

Did I say Duncan is already a member of that elite club?

Maybe you didn't start your morning right because you didn't start posting by bashing Doc Rivers.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You also said LEAD and clearly Parker is the player leading the Spurs these days. Now go off on a tangent cause you got schooled again

If Duncan wins the Finals MVP trophy then Duncan clearly LED the Spurs to a championship, dope!

How sure are you that Parker will win Finals MVP when the Finals hasn't started yet?

Get back to basics. All I said was Duncan CAN, I never said Duncan is already a member of that elite club.

Seriously, Karl, your nitpicking is comical!

Simpleton... your post was in the past tense... you didnt state IF Duncan led his team to the title..  Stop your constant habit of revising history just because you were outsmarted and outclassed again.

Re: Another Finals Appearance For Duncan

Tony Parker, best PG in the league. He's their MVP now, he has a big part in their run to the finals. Fierce always bashes one player, last year it was Ray (Terry-Lee = bust) now it's KG. KG changed our culture the last 6 seasons, back to Celtic basketball, Pierce couldn't do it.

It would have been a better thread if you compared Rondo to Parker, both late first round picks but what a difference in attitude. Parker continues to improve every season, Rondo not so much.

Duncan has better pieces around him, KG only had Pierce (on occasion) and Jeff Green this season.

Parker can lead a team to the top, Rondo was our main guy and we saw how things went the first half of the season.
