GM Danny Ainge = Red Aurebach (Offseason) + Elgin Baylor (In-season)

I wouldn't go that far on the offseason/Auerbach thing.  Ainge has made one summer a good summer, and if you look at his draft record, he's not so good.  The Baylor analogy is unfortunately apt and sadly funny.

yeah cuz Perk (28) Big Al (15) Tony Allen (24) Rondo (22) Avery (19) and Sully (21) were all such terrible picks at the spots we got them.... yawn

He is one of the better drafters in the game... missed getting Danny Granger by 1 pick in '05 so he was stuck with the bust Gerald Green... would have taken Rudy Gay in '06 if he wasn't setting team up cap wise to get KG and then blew Giddens over DeAndre Jordan (b/c he wasn't paying Posey, already had Perk and felt he needed wing D)

overall DA is much better than average in the draft.

So if McHale called Danny about KG (and may have even suggested the Ray move to him too), Eddie House got Posey to sign, and Ray/KG/PP recruited PJ Brown, then what has Doc & DA really shown us as far assessing talent and making shrewd moves?

I'm not sure but this team has won a championship, been to the finals again and lost and gone to the Eastern Conference Championship two other times in the last 5-6 years.  Danny has to be doing something right.  Could he have done better, he could have but hind sight is 20/20.  He's one of the better GM's in the league.

We're about to get run over by the wagons with this mediocre team without a PG, sufficient Big men, or rebounding...

That is a new one for explaining that bungle by Ainge.  I am surprised that he even knew that he was going to go for KG a year later.  I do think Ainge is not bad, but since his second draft to get Big Al and Tony Allen and before Sullinger, Ainge tried these for first round, Gerald Green, traded lottery pick for Telfair, Giddens who in all other mock drafts are late second round, Avery Bradley (very good pick), JJ instead of Marshon Brooks who had actually picked, then Fab Melo along with the Sullinger.  The trade for Ray was a good one too, but overall a very so so record.

Overall he has hit more than missed and gotten some steals later on in Al, Rondo and Avery who would have gone top 5 if those drafts were done again.

You don't remember Danny saying he'd have taken Gay in the '06 draft b/c he was worried about Roy's knees? But b/c Gay was so redundant with Pierce (who he almost traded twice in the previous year) he decided to swap the Raef for Ratliff contracts, thus giving them the ability to trade a big expiring for a vet to put with Pierce 1 year later.

The Wolves were not taking Raef's deal for KG and paying him 26 million over Theo 13, so no '08 title w/o that draft trade. Danny may not have known it was KG he would get, but it was going to someone Pierce's age, woulda been Pau Gasol or Marion or someone like that instead.

I always thought he wanted a PG, and he thought Telfair was really good because he personally scouted him several times at those high school games.  But you maybe right with your analysis.

    In response to Kirk6's comment:

People ragging on Ainge when the only thing that kept us from winning 3 championships was injuries to Perkins and Shaq.

If they gave out ten dollar bills, someone would complain that their's was wrinkled or they did not get the first one.

Even with Shaq out, we'd beat Miami in game 7 last year with Green & Bradley or just Bradley. And as Miami beat OKC, we'd done it too. Of course, we still had Ray Allen & Stiemsma.
