It has become apparent that while we PP is still a wily player he is not a go to closer anymore.  He is the only one that the Celtics can remotely place into that category but can no longer be counted on to be consistent in that role.  Without him there is no one else. The Celtics play really hard and well for the first 3 and a half quarters but when crunce time comes we simply do not have that go to guy.   All too often over the last two years, this year in particular, PP tries to be the closer he once was but since he is the only possiblitity and, since other teams are aware of this, as soon as he puts the ball on the floor, in comes the double team and all too often his mind takes over where his body cannot and he either forces up a shot, dribbles the ball off his body, throws an errant pass or some other inane play which proves the point.  The Celtics simply do not have a closer.

I hope that for next season we can get a proven closer.............and as long as we are wishing an effective big.

The only ones who don't know this, are Pierce and Doc!!

    Re: Celtics Closer????

I think we've relied so much on PP being the closer, we really cannot accept that he truly doesn't have that ability anymore.

I was disappointed at the shot he took at the end of the Miami game.  I really thought, with 7 seconds left, we could have gotten something much better.  PP bailed Miami out with that fallaway 3-point attempt when he could have gathered himself and tried to make a play.  There was a reason he was able to get the inbounds so easily.  Miami wanted him to throw up that low percentage shot.

Honestly, I felt JG should have had the ball in his hands at that point.  Although Battier made a nice play defensively just before that (ball went out of bounds), I would have challenged Battier to defend him AGAIN.  That would have definitely created a double team and Green could have still gotten to the rim or kicked it to an open shooter.

We did not force things and that's what PP is settling for now.  Last night, he had Gordon on him and he backs him down and falls away rather than jump towards the rim.  All Gordon could do is foul him but PP bailed Gordon out by falling away.

I'd rather see Terry get alot more crunch time shots because that is what he's done all his career.  I wouldn't mind seeing us set something up for KG either.

    +1

The problem is PP rarely EVER tries to draw people in and then dish for a better shot. He's going to force the shot no matter how bad or tough it is.

Great point Petey. I would like to see more of Green at the top of the key with a small team on the floor. It will force the other team to play him with a guy that isn't as quick as him and once he's around the guy he's going to get fouled or go striaght to the hoop. He was doing it all game. Hopefully Doc isn't showing this until the playoffs.

I think PP is still a great end of game player to go to.... as long as we iso him and dont set a pick so he gets trapped so quick. Will take Doc another 8 years to figure that out.

PP is C's best 1on1 player...  he has become very reckless with the ball when trapped but Doc sets him up that way...usually top of key, KG flashes a pick bringing the trap defender with him...

Nothing wrong with spreading it around to a JG ... teams just laying for PP

This is where we will mis Ra, the most...

We no longer have that second option last second shot maker...

Hopefully Terry can do that for us...but those players are hard to find/replace...

RA can go 0-11 and then POW! These guys go 0-3 and then pass away good shots...

Effective? We don't even play the new bigs we have. afa next year PP is good but Rondo with some free throw practice would be the best closer we could have. Big time inside and magical passing ability!

Not many teams can match up if any.

Its going to take way more than FT practice.

There's a reason R9R can't hit FTs. It takes the ball out of his hands at crunch time, something he doesn't want any part of.

Some want/demand the ball in their hands in big moments.

    He doesn't.

I think that will change.. RR was given the keys prematurely and did what was asked. Now something else is required and he will execute to perfection. I could be wrong but that is what I see happening!  Unfortunately but understandably..you don't. RR is one of the best talents in the NBA IMO and I see him adapting to what is needed. It's called maturity!

Rondo only tries in the playoff and on national tv.

Kirk, RR is a show time player up to now. I think he will come around and be one of the best team players/PGS' that Celtic fans have ever seen nearly a Cousy. Hope you are wrong.

Your heart sez he will change. Your head knows that he won't. Quite a conflict. Change is possible but not likely.

Harry Reems died recently. The porno star. He changed. He had to hit absolute bottom. Jobless. Penniless. Homeless. Addicted to alcohol/drugs. Found religion, got sober and pulled himself together. Died a respectable realtor/husband/provider.

Went from selling one kind of dirt to another.

Not sure if he could ever hit FTs.

Remember, the C's put the ball in Green's hands on that final possession vs. Miami and Battier stuffed him. I'm not blaming Green, just saying ...
