    Celtics Defense Great or Pathetic?

Assuming no changes from the current roster, which is highly unlikely, the Celtics offense will be horrid (separate post on this later), so our lottery position will depend on which players show up on the defensive end.

During the last 2 seasons, Rondo clearly lost his defensive prowess from earlier years that landed him on the all NBA Defensive first team twice.  He has the inherent ability... but if he continues his recent performance (without Garnett to help pick up his man driving to the hoop), things could be disasterous.  and Relying on Rondo for more offesive production could take his focus off defense. Which Rrondo will show up?

Regardless, if we need a stop, Bradley and Lee are both excellent defensive players.  These three are potentially the best backcourt defense in the NBA.

Wallace was first team all NBA Defensive Team just 2 years ago!!! Will he care or is he just riding out his contract?  He has the inherent capability.

Humphries is such an inconsistent player, hopefully Stevens can influence Hump to play to his potential.  He WAS an expert at covering the pick and roll (a perennial Celtics weakness), bangs and punishes, good defensive rebounder and shot blocker.  When he is unmotivated (last year with NJ) he is aweful, when focused he is very good defensively.

Assuming Faverani starts at center - scouting reports that he is a beast underneath, who can block at the rim and keep opposing big men away from the hoop. Who knows how this translates to the NBA.

Rondo (former all 1st team defense), Bradley (second team all nba defense), Wallace (former first team all defense), Lee, Hump and Fav could be the best shut down defense in the NBA and we finish 11 or 12th... or more likely, Rondo, Wallace, Hump could mail it in and Fav Sully and Oly display slow feet and we stink and sink to 4th worst record in the NBA.

I think we'll completely stink defensively. At the very least, I'm really hoping so. Will be tough to watch them this year. So use to being aggrevated when they lose. Now, I'll wanna c players develope and show that they can be a force in this league. But at the same time... I want them to rank up as many loses as they can. lol. Gonna be a strange season for my emotions for sure.

They can put some good defensive backcourts together, but the forecourt will be terrible on the defensivintend.

If Rondo can get back his defensive mindset of 2-3 years ago and AB can get back some of his offensive game that he has briefly shown once upon a time, then yeah, the defensive backcourts can be decent.  We are very deep at SG, AB might not even get much playing time, so I think that is too many ifs to say that the backcourts D is going to be good at this point.  And the bigs should be bad as you say, I can't expect much from undrafted Euro/Brazillian player and unathletic rookie.

El stinkaroodie..bad, bad D...loosing teams do not play good D...it takes real desire and hustle, as well as coaching in the transition game to play good D...it's going to take time, heck, they won't have their final starting roster and primary subs for 2 full years!

KG was the stop gap, the guy everyone was funnelled into in the middle ( for the most part) last year...he's gonzo, so is their interior D.

Give it time...et them put their team together...two guards playing D isn't a good potential D...they need someone inside and rebounding inside as part of their D..we don't have that yet...I'm sure we will eventually, but not yet.

Pathetic. Just look at our defensive #s when kg was off the floor. We are in serious need of a rim protector/rebounder.

We are going to have developmental problems for sure, but its all good. On the job training. We will play an occasional gem where everything clicks and we beat a few championship caliber teams due to schedule or having the emotional edge for the game. Its all good.

We should all be wearing our scouting hats for this season if we want to be happy.

Eldunker, excellent analysis of the defensive prowess, or lack thereof in the backcourt. I see things differently with the forwards/centers. Brandon Bass showed he could do an excellent job on defense playing against Melo. On the other hand, he brings little offense. KO is slow footed but he may be able to guard many centers since there are not that many traditional style centers.  Green is quick enough to guard most of the league's small forwards.  A lot will hinge on who is waiting at the rim when a guy gets past his man. I thought letting Iverson go overseas was a mistake. He could have contributed 6 hard fouls per game.

Rondo, Brooks, Green, Olynyk, and Faverani.

    I'm looking forward to it.

Well, at least Green will be on the floor for the Oct 29+ season tip-off.

Not likely that Rondo will start the season.  Probably sit out November and activated sometime in December to demonstrate that he is healthy in preparation for a potential trade option.

Brooks is perhaps the worst defensive player on the team.  Not ready to start over Bradley or Crawford, but If he can improve that aspect of his game, he will be a important future piece.

Way too early to call Oly a starter or even the first or second sub off the bench.  Summer league is not the NBA.  Sully, Bass and Hump could all play before Oly.

Not likely that Fav is a starter, but probably a place-holder at this point and eventual backup since Melo is no where near ready as a backup.

Ainge said Rondo would start the season. Of course, he might be lying.
Crawford or Bradley? You must be joking. Bradley got worse and worse as the season progressed and disappeared in the playoffs, and Crawford might not even make the team.

Olynyk is already better than Sullinger, Bass or Humphries.

Faverani is better than Melo or Randolph.

Remember this is a rebuild year.  Its not about putting the best players on the court to win a handful of games this year.  Danny would want to showcase Crawford, Bass, Wallace and Bradley to position for potential trades... looking at next year.   Regardless, despite a rough finish to last season, Bradley WILL START the season at SG.  He is one of the best defensive players in the league, he is young and he came off an injury last year never regaining confidence in his outside shot which was decent prior to injury.  Brooks needs to learn how to play defense before he will get any relevant playing time.

You're drinking too much tainted kool-aid.  Its WAY TOO EARLY to make any rational judgement or comparison with Olynyk.  Right now he has potential, but is #3 at PF. and backup at C.

Rondo start date will be dependent on his health, Danny's tank strategy and his long or short term plans for Rondo.  I'm counting on a tank strategy and keeping Rondo on the court briefly for the purpose of a trade in December that will include Wallace and Crawford.
