I understand that they used only part of trading exception.Looks like they still have almost 5 millions left for another deal. They have to use it by the 12th.Go celtics

ORLANDO, Fla. — With time running out, the Boston Celtics literally made the most of their $10.3 million trade exception as part of a three-team deal with Cleveland and Brooklyn.

The Celtics' eight-figure trade exception was generated when they sent Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to Brooklyn in July of last year.

Boston had until Saturday to use the exception before it expired.

The Celtics acquire Tyler Zeller from Cleveland, Marcus Thornton from Brooklyn as well as a future first round pick from the Cavs. The combined salaries of Zeller ($1.7) and Thornton ($8.575 million) is just under $10.3 million.

Can Cleveland even afford to sign LeBron AND Love if they trade Wiggens?

Love might be wiling to keep his contract flexible but he's not going to extend for a pittance either.

Yes.  And they will have Bird's right with Love when the extension time comes.

    Wiggins and Waiters for Love.

So much for the build through the draft theory. No team has the roster for that many draft picks. A trade has to happen at this point or you have serious wasted value here.

CLE's Plan B could be Ariza and Love.  That's still a good team

Their Plan C could be to keep Wiggins, sign Ariza and Gasol, and that's a good team, too.

    3-way deal.

    [/QUOTE]

Wow, not sure if these players are staying but I like it. Thornton is a catch and shoot guy with decent size and defense. Cannot create his own shot....where have we heard that. A.B. or Thornton are gonna be gone soon. I like Zeller because he represents a real 5 that maybe will be a fixture here. Doesnt need to score much. Just be a big body. Either way, the C's are gonna be good in a couple years if Danny makes the right moves. Lots of picks to use on a trade or get more young players.

Marcus Thorton is gone from this team.

He'll be gone by the deadline.

He can score the ball, and a contending team will certainly take him. Another pick will come from him

    Good trade for the Cs.

Ainge knows how to accumulate picks and can wheel and deal. What he does with those picks?

Nevertheless, is was a good trade. Zeller is better than any 5 the Cs have had in 2013-14. He only played half the minutes in comparison to his rookie year, but his numbers greatly improved. He could be a steal.  A #1 pick is always good. Thornton is a 2 who can't shoot, so he'll fit right in.

Re: Celts Get T.Zeller and Marcus Thornton

Thornton's contract is expiring, that is his only value to the Celtics.

Zeller, while not a tenacious rebounder, is very good on the offensive glass and a solid defender if he can stay on the floor.  He has a good jumper, has a lot of room for improvement and upside in his all around game.  We're going to be a much better defensive team this year and better over all.

thornton is an expiring contract. i guess that's better than a trade exception that was about to expire? acquiring his expiring deal still means we have 8 mil more in payroll than we did yesterday. it just means that someone may want him at the trade deadline. is that correct?

On the contrary, it supports the building through the draft theory.

Rondo, Bass, Joel Anthony, and Marcus Thornton all have expiring contracts.

And Wallace and Jeff Green will have expiring contracts in 2016.

It's not like the Celts will not lose any players for the next 2 years.

nor will we be any good for the next 2 years. assuming lebron, melo, love, bosh all sign elsewhere (i know love was the only one we had any shot at), there are no more big time FAs out there who could have made a difference on this team. bosh to houston makes them a legit contender. OKC is already a legit contender. lebron/love to cleveland makes them a legit contender. IND is already a legit contender. we are left sitting on the sidelines and watching for the next 3-4 years. people talk about having flexibility for next summer for FAs, but who do we realistically have a shot at next summer? won't it just be a repeat of this summer, with even lesser FAs to pine after? these fireworks are sparklers. not even roman candles. sorry to be debbie downer, but i wanted actual fireworks. maybe they're still in on their way...

That's why build through the draft.

After 3-4 years, it will be the Celts' turn to dominate the east.

    Unlikely.

Maybe if he averages 20 ppg this season, someone will surely give him 12m per year.

So KG and PP essentially fetched us 4 first round picks + 1 option to swap a 1st + Zeller + other fillers.
