Me being from Kentucky I've watched a lot of this guy.
He is a shot blocking machine or was in college. I think this is a nice pickup for us off the bench.

On November 21, 2009, Jarvis Varnado became the SEC's all-time career block record holder with 413 total blocks in his career. This passed O'Neal's career block record of 412. On January 23, 2010, Varnado surpassed Adonal Foyle on the NCAA's Division I all-time career blocks list to become the second-leading shot-blocker. Needing 8 blocks for the record, Varnado became the NCAA's Division I all-time shot blocker against Alabama on February 24, 2010 passing Wojciech Myrda's record of 535 career blocks.
Jarvis Varnado is one of just two college players in history to achieve the 1,000/1,000/500 milestone (points/rebounds/blocks), the other being David Robinson.

He's only 6-9, Kirk.
Will you be happy if Doc uses him as a Center?

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF JARVIS VARNADO IN THE CELTICS DISCUSSIONS...lately? Ainge knows -- the wannabe uninformed & has no idea what's on the mind of Mr. Ainge............ again !
Another leftover pick up - garbage in garbage out.

this guy is the same height as:
kris Humphries
Davis West
Chris Wilcox
Tyler Hansbrough
1/4" taller than
R. Turiaf
Jerome Williams (who he probably could be at best)
Greg Smith (who seems to be getting some minutes unside at Houston)
Height isn't everything folks.
that said, he IS a D-leaguer....his ceiling of Jerome Williams would be best case,IMO.

With Wilcox out for a while this guy looks like he fits the bill. The Celtic system sometimes adds to a player's effectiveness, especially one with the athletic ability of Varnado.
My vote is wait and see....

Sullinger is also 6-9 and you keep saying he's an undersized PF playing Center.
Varnado is 6-9 and will play Center for the Celts.
Both 6-9 yet one is undersized?
Kirk, are you saying that it's possible 1 pound of sugar will be lighter than 1 pound of concrete?

As expected, the first thing that comes out of your radioactive brain is negative.
What the hell happened to you when you were a child?
You can't even say let's give this kid a chance?

After watching the Youtube that Kirk provided, I believe this kid can help us. He appears physical for one and it seemed everyone thought they could take it right to him and shoot over him. Didn't happen. Very athletic. Not sure about the rebounding and what he can do on the offensive end but one thing appears certain, he can help protect the rim. I guess you could say I am a little excited about someone I have never even heard of, but he is exactly the type player that I have been saying we need. Looks to be a HUGE improvement over Collins. If I was Doc I would put him in with the starters at some pt in the game and say "block everything coming your way and rebound". If he can do those two things we may have someone. I know these highlights aren't the NBA, but look at Steamer last year. When he started with our starters we usually played really well and he benefitted from playing with them. He also gave us some huge shot blocking. IMO Doc didn't play him enough.

I'm still confused why one 6-9 player is not undersized while another 6-9 player is undersized.
Ugh!

Because some players play bigger than their size and some play smaller. Example- Jeff Green.

This is good. Varnado fills a hole, for now. I really hope Danny doesn't trade away Fab. His 14 blocks triple-double? That is awesome progress. He is finally getting comfortable. Let him finish the year with the Claws and fold him in to the mix next year. With Bradley at the perimeter and Melo in the paint we have a chance to get back to a top defensive team!
Rondo
Bradley
Green
Sullinger
Melo

Thanks for the post! This guy is comparable to Melo, but smaller! in addition, Melo knows what the C's run on offense and defense!
Scratching my head on this one! I was expecting a bit more for Christmas DA!

You do realize this was one game don't you? Not sure how you become more comfortable after having one game. I don't think he has had any other huge games in any department or someone would have posted them. Don't get me wrong, I hope he pans out at well, but if he can bring us a good player now 30 years or younger I am all for trading him.

Varnado is known as a defensive specialist and is especially adept at shot blocking aided by his 7'4" wingspan. He led the NCAA in blocks for the 2007–08 season with 157 blocks which tied Shaquille O'Neal for the most blocks in a season in the SEC. In the 2008–09 season, he would break that single season record with 170 blocks. Varnado was named SECDefensive Player of the Year in 3 consecutive years (2008, 2009 and 2010) becoming the first person to ever do so.
