Re: Dirk plans to take huge pay cut

I will believe it when I see it.  Dirk might take a 2 or 3M pay cut, but that's it.  The way Miami's big 3 accepted salaries lower than the max.

Dallas has Dirk and Matrix under contract.  If Matrix 1 year deal gets traded, Cuban has a lot of flexibility with free agents.  He wants Howard and Paul but he did not get Lebron or DWill, so he can keep dreaming.

KG would have received a lot of money from Brooklyn last year.  I would have given KG and Paul MORE MONEY but with a team option to terminate the contracts after each season.

We agree on that ... KG taking $7.5-8MM would have gone a long way to helping Danny get that other piece to help KG & Paul get back to the top of the hill again.

KG and PIERCE need to be COMBINED piece of the book 5-6 MILLION this next year- that's for both of them to be worth coming back.  they are old and older.  you need to put a lot of pieces around them to have a chance for success.  i'm not even sure it can feasibly be done given danny's track record of so-so-at-best roster moves and doc, a/k/a the "meat grinder" of grinding up and spitting out viable role players who come to BOS and turn into shadows of their former selves.

    Not just 7.5-8m.

KG should have just signed for the vet's minimum.

Remember, Pierce was being paid 16.79m last season. KG getting 7.5-8m would only have meant the Celts will not pay luxury tax.

KG got 11.57m last season. An 8 to 7.5m salary would have meant the Celts below the tax line but still over the cap.

Lets see how much of a pay cut Dirk will take ... he's currently at 21M. If he takes a vet min, then yes you absolutely have a point.

The other thing to consider is that Paul was still on the books for 16M... would have been kind of demeaning to KG to take a vet min for the 'team' when PP is making big bucks..

Dirk wants another ring. So he will help out the team by taking a huge pay cut to enable the Mavs to sign another big name free-agent.

If KG did that last season then there would've been no need for the likes of DJ White and Shavlik Randolph.

    Actions speaks louder than words.

Very interesting.  Even though we have discussed this on other threads I agree that if KG had resigned for only a few million it would have helped the Celtics chances of competing at a higher level since they could have upgraded with additional cap money.  If Dirk does indeed agree to resign for a few million it will help Dallas to sign another free-agent.  When you have a salary cap to contend with it does help for veteran players to resign to help the team sign an additional impact player.    Baseball is the only major professional sport where owners aren't as concerned with salaries since they have no salary cap.  Many baseball owners still aren't committed to excessive spending.

Re: Dirk plans to take huge pay cut

We shall see what Dirk does, it is a year away

KG took a big paycut from 22 million to 11. Dirk currently makes 22 million. In his eyes a nice little 4 year 40 million contract to close his career in Dallas would be a 'big paycut', a deal with a strating salry of 8.5m in 2014-15.

None of these players are taking around the MLE, let alone the veteran min. Even guys like Ray and Battier, whose market values were around 5-6m a year, signed for 3m.
