Did Doc really need to play Rondo 40 minutes? Why does he continue to do this?

    Re-think your position.

Rondo is twenty something, and there are no back to backs in the play-offs.

no need to hold back, but i thought we got delonte to play a significant role?  there's a somewhat fine balance b/t playing rondo megaminutes and letting delonte atrophy.

you bench bashers can't really bash all that hard if the bench isn't given many minutes?

maybe doc saw all the assists and how the offense was working and wanted to bury the nicks good tonight.

but sooner or later, delonte needs to catch close to 20 mins a game- think about it- delonte gets 20, rondo 38, ray ray 38.  right?  so far delonte sitting at 13 and change through three games.  too little.

maybe so.  but he's historically been a tangible playoff contributor.  the way back to that may involve mixing it up a little bit.  maybe some mins w/ starters as w/ green to jump start things.

i think before it's done, we're going to need delonte to come up with some performances for us.  more so as time goes on.  i think he's a good post player, let's dial up some of those for him.

he must still be recovering from his assortment of injuries. we were outscored by 16 in west's 14 minutes on the court. that's just not good enough.

green, west and davis still have a big part to play. thankfully we didn't need them this round, but we will against miami

remember, sheed was a total nonfactor in the first round last year, and got called out by garnett after game 1 of the cleveland series

Poor Delonte is snake bit. He tweaked his, already bad, ankle again and it shows.

We are going to need him and Shaq.

But they might not be ready to go. So then what???

Somebody has to step up... and Doc's gonna have to trust him. We haven't seen a lot of trust in these guys from Doc. Bradley's been buried all year. With a different coach he might be able to contribute now. But he sat all year!

So the starters will continue to play 35 minutes or so against Miami, unless fouls send them to the bench. Murphy and that other guy should use all of their 12 fouls enthusiastically on Miami's drives to the basket. But they won't because they won't play.

Great win indeed, but... I am concerned about the bench.  Just look at those +/- numbers.  Starters all major +, bench guys all major -...

Hope Doc was right when he said they will improve.  They will be needed as the playoffs go along...

    Re: Great win but

Rondo got the extra minutes as did KG, PP & Ray cause our bench has been pure dog s***

Most of our starters were out early in the 4th... then the bench gave up a quick 4 or 5 points in a blink.. WHISTLE...TIMEOUT CELTICS...

I dont blame Doc one bit for putting his starters back in... The way this Celtic bench has been giving back points by the buschell, the Knicks could have very easily turned this game around.  Cant take chances losing any playoff games... and our bench is a BIG CHANCE right now.

As far as West goes, hes played extrememly poorly offensively but well on defense. Hes very hesitant with his shot and clumsey with the ball... cant explain it, sort of like cant explain BBD either.

A few of these guys need to get back to playing better ball  for us to have a real shot at title

West looked very slow last night, not just foot speed but reaction time.  He seems to have abandoned the catch-and-shoot move completely that we saw when he was here before and in Cleveland.  Maybe his ankle is the reason, but it's enough of a reason to get someone else in there except when they're protecting the ball at the end of a game.  He looked like he had ankle weights on or that his overly long "shorts" were catching on the back of his shoes, but he was not at his best and I thought he hurt them when he was in the game.  Plus he couldn't continue the pace Rondo set - at least against the Knicks; I'd go with Bradley at the point based on what we saw in the last few reg. season games.

Karl I agree with your post.  And if the bench doesnt improve and costs us a title they will be the blame not the Perkins trade.  hopefully, SHAQ will be ready for round 2.  This will give us:

    JON/Krstic-center
    BBD/JON-PF
    JG-SF
    Dwest SG/PG

With Arroyo, Murphy, and Pav ready to go if any of the above stinks!

Agree with you about the bench.  They definitely have to improve for the Celtics to win their next playoff series.   Many have posted similar thoughts regarding the bench and their poor performance so far during the playoffs.   I just hope they can figure it out soon.

Obviously and I know that Rondo is 24 and there are no back to backs in the playoffs, but was it necessary to play him 40 minutes in a 17 point win? Clearly we are a better team with Rondo on the court and I know he is young but my one beef with Doc is that he tends to run up Allen, PP's, and Rondos minutes unnecessarily. I understand in the first 2 games, they were close. When I said why does he continue to do this, I was referring more to the regular season. Lets hope in game 4 we can get the bench in there and establish something that works for the Heat series.

As others have said: Because he wants to win.  When he put the bench in, they started to lose the lead so he put Rondo (and other starters) in the game so there would be no doubt about winning.

West is hurt, still.  The ankle is still sore but he'll heal with another week or two and then be very valuable.  When Rondo is off or people are slacking off him, West will be a great sub.  But for now, we didn't need him and Rest is not an issue in the playoffs.

Most of these guys need customized clubs and certainly can afford to get them, but why get them any sooner than one needs to.

If you can only score 87 points against one of the worst defensive teams in the league in game 1, and in game two you can only win by 3 when the opponent is missing its 3rd best player, and loses debatably its best player before half time, and the opponent is missing its 3rd best player and its debatably best player is at about 30% for game 3 IS THERE ANY CHANCE AT ALL THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PLAY RONDO THE WHOLE GAME AND RISK NOT GOING UP 3 LOVE?

What is interesting to deduce or infer is that in the future when Rondo is tossing careless passes to no names as opposed to Ray, Paul, and KG then he will be still missing most of his shots, not going to the free throw line and getting about 6 assists instead of 20.

Wade is not going to allow Ray to shoot 8 of 11 and LeBron is now allowing Pierce 38 and contrary to popular belief the Cs do not have a huge advantage at the 1 when LeBron is the 1 for the Heat.

There was a time in the 90s where one could have said Kevin Johnson, John Stockton, Mark Price and so on were the best point guards in the league..... reality... the best point guards in the league were Michael and Scottie...... right now Wade and LeBron are the best point guards in the east, and of course you add Rose......  the Cs do not have an advantage at the point in any of the remaining series unless of course they face the Lakers at which point, the Lakers render Rondo irrelevant like they did last year.  Oh my goodness the Lakers length was so hard to deal with but of course if our point guard could have hit just a few random uncontested jumpers and had gone to the line and made even an average point guard shooting percentage the Lakers length would have never ever ever ever been discussed.......  don't want to hear that?  Well too bad Doc specifically mentioned it.

Anyway, let's take a step back and look at what is actually happening..... the Cs limped into the playoffs, the Heat stormed into the playoffs.  The Heat after game 1 have been completely dominant... the Cs barely got by in game 1, barely got by in game 2 without Billups and without Amare for the second half, in game 3 the Knicks are missing Billups and Amare was not even Troy Murphy were blown out.... somehow that is to be interpreted is that the Cs are back and to be reckoned with.........  Pierce says "lets hope we can sweep and get some rest" as if the Heat will not just be sitting there waiting for them...... is he really that stupid?  We can get rest if we get the Knicks series over with?  Hey Paul, after game 1 the Heat have completely dominated, I know that we live in an age where it is very difficult to get current information but the Heat will be done with their series either a few hours before or slightly after you and they are all 10 years younger than you.... when exactly do you get that rest?"

We never had to worry about the Heat when Perkins was in the line-up! Also, we didn't need to worry about Orlando either.

Oh, sorry Danny. I forgot. we got green & Nads, we just have to find them.
And did I mention 39 year old Shaq is cummin to save us?

Well, that's not correct (Perk giving us an advantage over Miami).  Perk was injured in the first half of the season and when we beat Miami, Perk was no where to be found.  It was KG, Shaq, BBD, and Semih who dominated inside.

But, back to the real issue of the thread - Doc did the right thing.  He didn't let the lead dwindle down.  One poster above talks as if 17 points was the lead the whole 4th quarter with no trouble.  Not true.  When the starters went out early in the 4th, the lead started to dwindle.  Remember Walker hit 2 threes and the knicks had one more basket after that.  Lead coming down.  I had seen enough and thankfully, so had Doc.  So, he put Rondo and the other starters back in.  Thanks, Doc, for keeping this game under control.  I would hate to see it get to a 6 point lead because the subs continued to sputter and all of a sudden its a game with the Knicks having momentum......ala Dallas tonight.

You don't take chances in the playoffs.  ANYTHING can happen so when you have someone down - STEP ON THEIR THROATS!
