GS Trying to Clear Cap Space for DH ... Lakers May Agree to S&T

    http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2013/07/05/sh-blog-warriors-trying-to-clear-salary-cap-to-sign-howard-al-jefferson-agrees-to-join-bobcats/

The Lakers have been adamant for weeks they would prefer to let Howard leave for nothing and bank the resultant salary-cap space in the summer of 2014, with many rival executives likewise convinced that L.A. would have real reservations about helping Howard land with a division rival. So sources say that the Warriors, in an effort to manufacture some financial flexibility to help their chances, have begun calling teams with salary-cap space to try to entice them to take expiring contracts off their books so they can clear a $20 million hole for Howard.

Such a scenario would be challenging, some executives have said, but not impossible. The Warriors have three huge expiring contracts in Andrew Bogut ($14 million), Richard Jefferson ($11 million) and Andris Biedrins ($9 million). According to sources, they have tried to unload all three players this week to teams with cap room.

The Jazz and Warriors are in talks, sources say, with Utah possessing the requisite salary-cap space. The Jazz also have an opening to take in Bogut's contract and have an opening for a big man after letting Al Jefferson walk away

It was a particularly uncomfortable holiday for the Los Angeles Lakers, sources told ESPN.com, as fears mount within the organization that Howard's current employers could have fallen to as low as fourth in his pecking order.

... there were indications late Thursday that Lakers officials, already bracing for the worst, had begun to rethink their long-held position of ruling out sign-and-trade options in the event Howard decides to bolt to one of L.A.'s rivals.

One source briefed on the Lakers' thinking told ESPN.com that, if the extra fifth year and nearly $30 million they can offer Howard isn't enough to hold off the competition, they would be forced to "look at everything."

For months, Lakers officials have privately indicated they have no interest in taking back long-term contracts in a sign-and-trade for Howard, preferring to preserve their salary-cap space for the summer of 2014 and focus on slashing their luxury-tax bill for the coming season.

If Howard were to choose Houston or Golden State, sign-and-trade discussions inevitably will be proposed by the team that lands Howard. And there were signals Thursday night that, in the case of Golden State, L.A. would have to at least consider a swap if either Harrison Barnes or Klay Thompson is added to the proposal along with Bogut.

    Mployee,

As a true Celtics fan, this is the worst news ever. I am strongly pulling for Dwight to just leave lala land and straight up sign with Houston.

If the Lakers finagle a S&T deal to get Klay and Barnes and Bogut? Thats three great assets.

PLEASE DWIGHT, NO HEART, NO EMOTIONS, STRICTLY BUSINESS, GO SIGN W/ HOUSTON AND LEAVE LAKERS IN THE DUST!

Also, I wish we had more space so we could facilitate a Biedrins & future 1st to give the warriers space. That is going to be a great deal for whichever team gets that. Expiring contracts and future picks... sign me up!

GS is not a good option for Howard.

Would you rather have a big three with David Lee and Stephen bad ankles Curry?  James Harden and whatever they can get for Asik/Lin?  Dirk + cap space next year?

Agree on both accounts ... Hoping GS succeeds in moving Bogut and one other player so they don't need the S&T.

While Danny did a great job in getting value for KG/PP/JT and succeeded in keeping the Big Three together far longer than anticipated, the wait for this deal to clear seems like forever and we are going to miss out on lots of opportunities until it does clear and Danny is able to pare the roster and create more cap space.

It's tough to be standing on the sidelines watching with your hands tied behind your back ... let's hope Danny has already worked on potential deals so he can move fast before the best opportunities are gone.

    Howard isn't even that good.

He's now on his 3rd team.

And if the Lakers beat the Clippers we get a better draft pick.

    Per SheridanHoops.com,

[Since the Warriors] are willing to go this far, they clearly received some kind of assurance from Howard’s camp that he would sign with them if the Warriors do their part. Either that, or they are willing to take a giant leap of faith for a player who is worth taking such a risk for, even if he gave them no such assurance that he would definitely sign with them. Whatever the case may be, Golden State appears to be in serious contention to land Howard, adding that much more intrigue and drama to the situation.

So DH is also now the GM of the Rockets?

Could this be another prediction by the Mployee gone wrong?

    Zach Klein         @ZachKleinWSB

Any Hawks sign & trade deal w/Rockets would involve 7-foot center Omer Asik. I'm told Jeremy Lin not necessarily involved in potential trade

That's where it ends ... No way Smith ends up a Rocket for Asik or Lin.

MPloyee8 right again ... Let's see 1) C's will sign Pressey 2) C's will move up in draft for a big 3) Smith to Detroit .... When you're right you're right .... but in your case ... LOL!!!
