Imagine having Carmelo Anthony on this team and losing nobody?! It SHOULD have happened if not for Ricky Pitino....

August 2, 1999 the celtics traded Ron Mercer, Popeye Jones, and Dwayne Schintzius, to the Denver Nuggets for Danny Fortson, Eric Washington, Eric Williams and a number one draft pick. The Celtics had the option to use this #1 pick in the 2001, 2002, or 2003 draft. The Celtics exercised the option on the 11th pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, despite the fact that Denver sucked and had no hopes of getting any better in the next two years in the powerful West region! (and also depsite the fact we had no 1st round pick the following year 2002) All because Ricky P and his staff were enamored with a Community College player; Kedrick Brown! Remember him?! He could jump out of the gym but sucked as a player! Well we got Kedrick Brown and Denver got to keep their 2002 draft pick which ended up being #5 overall, and keep their 2003 pick which ended up being #3 and Carmelo Anthony! It really is to bad because even a monkey at the zoo knew back then that Denvers pick would be higher than #11 in 2002 and 2003! And oh yeah dont forget Ricky P then chose Joe Forte with his THIRD 1st round pick that year bypassing a PG named Tony Parker! Keep this in mind and realize we are lucky to have Danny Ainge as GM now!

Pitino also gutted the team when Ducan was not the pick which he though he would get. So trade away Dee Brown and some other decent players on the c's rooster. Then Pitino went back to college where he can stay forever.  I suppose we should be glad to be where we are now with Doc and the current team. Although it was hard to loose Perk. Maybe will get Powe back to clean the boards and hopefully sign Murphy to nock down 3 pointers. Any comment are welcome.

There is NO way that if the C's drafted Melo that we would have KG and/or Ray...

If we had PP and Melo we arent bad enough to get the #5 pick(Jeff Green, traded for Ray) and we prob dont have 1/2 of the pieces that we traded to MINN for KG(Big Al, Gmoney).

Not to mention Pitino may have not gotten axed when he did so who knows if Ainge would even be our GM....maybe without him we dont draft Rondo.....

The Celts should have kept Joe Johnson and drafted Tony Parker over Joe Forte in 2001

yes indeed w/ Johnson, Pierce and Walter McCarty/EWill on the wings the logical thing was to roll over the Denver pick and hope for a high lotto pick in '02

(or draft Troy Murphy b/c we had no backup PF)

In 2002 if the Celtics had pick #5 there is no way they roll it over again.

They draft Amare Stoudamire, The next best two options were Nene or Caron Butler, w/ Butler being so similar to Pierce-Johnson that you'd take Amare or Nene

Then we'd still have our own pick in '02 instead of trading for Rodney Rogers and Tony Delk (b/c we had Parker) and we could have picked Tayshaun Prince or Carlos Boozer.

So our young core back in '02 should have been Parker, JJ, Pierce, Prince or Amare, Antoine, Boozer or Nene, Battie

Of course this has zip to do w/ Danny's trades 3-5 years later, Danny is likely not even here as Chris Wallace would never have been considered a bust as a GM w/ those drafts

I would imagine that any Celtics fan would regret the time that Pitino spent with the Celtics.  He was just awful and hopefully will never get another chance in the NBA again.

    Susan,
You are right.  We can look at literally every season and find things we could have done and wish we did.  That's just the way it is. Frankly Carmelo as good as he is does not make wish at this moment he was on the Celtics.  We have several winners.
Carmelo still has not proven a thing yet.

Lots of "what ifs", but bottom line is Pitino sucked as GM, and was almost as bad of a coach while he was here.

Re: Imagine having Carmelo Anthony on this team and losing nobody?! It SHOULD have happened if not for Ricky Pitino....

Those moves in '01 were made by Wallace after Pitino quit

The trade itself was made by Pitino... so if Mercer whose career was over by '02 had been turned into Amare or Nene instead of Kedrick Brown, we'd have remembered him a little more fondly.

you also have to remember that after early season success the skinnier Joe johnson was removed from the rotation in favor of the more atheltic Brown by O'Brian before the trading deadline. The Suns said we could choose which of the two of them to include in the deal, and O'Brian told Wallace to jettison JJ.

What about the team now thogh?  I was psyched when Pitino came on board but I think he really screwed the Celtics up.
