The fastest team to reappear in the Finals, from one generation to another, is the Lakers. In 1991 Magic Johnson lost to MJ. The next time the Lakers were in the Finals was in 2000 with Shaq and Kobe. So that's 9 years. No other team went from one Finals to another faster than the Lakers.

There are 2 ways to build a championship team. It's either building through the draft of through free-agency.

The best way to go is building through the draft.

Expecting big name free-agents to sign with Boston in the next few years is not being realistic.  Boston is not a city like LA or NY.

 

So why 10 years?

Lebron will still be playing at a high level in the next 5 years.

Durant will still be playing 10 years from now.

Those two players will be obstacles the Celts have to overcome. If the Celts were to win a championship in the next 10 years, they'd have to do it against Lebron or Durant. And that's without having KG and Pierce anymore.

lol you have no idea what will happen to either of them in the next 10 years. they might tear an ACL, or even get traded to the Celtics. In place of KG and Paul they might get 2 better players or at least equal. They might get 3 players they might get 4 who knows.

Ainge had a choice earlier today. But he chose to think short term instead of long term. Now it's looking like the Celts will make the playoffs and exit in the 1st round.

Since I could see what the ignored board bully wrote in 0033's responses, just wanted to point out that the 70's championship teams won with ONE regular from the 60's dynasty - Hondo, only 5 years later, fitting that rhymes with Rondo, b/c he'd be the one holdover from '08 the C's could win with in the next few years

The '81 Celtics won with ZERO holdovers from the '76 team just 5 years earlier...

C'mon this is BASIC Celtic history....

Another example would be two teams most Celtic fans would be familiar with... the '81 and '86 Rockets our C's beat in two seperate finals

Remember, the NBA is a superstar driven league. Without superstars or multiple All-Stars you're not going to win a championship.

Let's be realistic, Boston is not as attractive to superstar players compared to cities like NY or LA. 

So the only way the Celts are going to get another superstar is through the draft.

 

Come on, after KG and Pierce are gone would you want to be a part of a rebuilding Celtics team if you're Lebron or Durant?

Funny thing is Ainge was so cocky he wouldn't let the same thing that happened to Red happen to him ("I would have traded Larry Bird"). Now he finds out it ain't so easy. 

In retrospect giving KG a no trade clause wasn't so smart. 

Fierce not sure about 10 years but the franchise is going to struggle for a number of years due to this. Ainge held on to the core too long. The trade deadline deals he had to consider weren't very good but they will look awful good this time next year. 

Ainge has been pretty good at drafting value and turning them into veterans in search of a ring (Allen, KG) and I could see him pulling something like that off again but it may not happen anytime soon

When rick p. was running the team he SCREWED THE CELTICS VIA THE CAP..THE CS WERE SO FAR OVER THE CAP..IT TOOK A DECADE + TO GET OVER IT...KG has signed for 2 years passed this..and paul has just this year on his deal..IF the CELTICS dont sign paul..kg may retire or want to be traded..SO in 1 YEAR THE CELTICS can have 28 million free under the cap...

So basically were looking at this..If paul doesnt sign with the cs boston may be 2 years ahead..if they sign pierce and have kg and Jason terrys deals all run out on the same year..that would be 30 million plus freed on the cap...

 

 Boston can over pay for a free agent..and get there friends in the tune of other players to play with boston..

But will Miami have LeBron, Wade & Bosh or even two of them? In 2014-15' they are comitted to $61M for those three players. With the impending Luxury Tax they will have to fill out their team with all aging vets at VM and newbies cause they don't have the revenue stream that the Lakers have to pay the exponential tax penalties for doing so ... they will implode. That's why OKC had to choose between Harden and Ibaka cause the days of three Superstars is almost over.

This changes the landscape for all teams. Any team that can forge together two superstars or near superstars with a supporting cast of affordable ballers that have chemistry, coaching and heart will be able to get to the big dance much easier than historically possible as a result of this new CBA. Get it?

No the Lakers will not implode because of the Luxury tax.  Their payroll after the end of next season only has one player under contract.  That leaves plenty of room to sign Howard to max deal and another player to a similar, but not necessarily a max contract.

The Clips are waking up this morning with regret, after getting thumped by SA at home last night! A real shot at a title was within their grasp, and they punted the ball!

If it is truly a fixed automatic 10 years then yeah, we have got to blow it up and rebuild ASAP.  It is more about timing and luck to get players like LeBron or Durant.  Durant could have been ours if the ping pong ball went a little differently.  Arm chair GM is interesting but it is hard to tell what is the definitive right thing to do with something like this over the course of 10 years.

An interesting (and not all that surprising) twist in yesterday's events. Turns out that KG's loyalty (and no-trade clause) are why he's still in Boston.

Garnett said during All-Star weekend that he would not waive his no-trade clause, and held true to his vow despite added pressure from Clippers guard Chris Paul. According to a league source, Paul called Garnett and said that if he was open to joining the Clippers, then Paul would make it happen. Garnett, though, declined, expressing a desire to remain a Celtic.

If you were in the blow it up group, don't blame Ainge (well, at least not for his deadline efforts).
