WALTHAM --- Boston Celtics draft pick James Young suffered a strained neck in a car accident in the weeks prior to the 2014 NBA Draft. The injury forced him to miss workouts for teams around the league prior to the draft and may have helped the swingman drop to the Celtics at no. 17 on draft night.

Lingering effects from the neck injury kept Young sidelined as the rest of the Celtics summer league team gathered in Waltham today for their first official practice.

“James didn’t go through workouts this morning because we’re still just being precautionary after his car accident a couple weeks ago,” summer league coach Jay Larranaga said.

He should live in Waltham, and hire a taxi!

He appeared fine in post draft interviews - I wonder if the concern is concussion related....

At least DA drafted him with full knowledge of the medical situation.

    J. Young will not miss the season - I am guessing he practices tomorrow.

The Cs are treating this like a concussion?

    J. Young was at Fenway last night!

One of the newest members of the Boston Celtics, James Young, is getting himself used to his new home by attending Wednesday night's Red Sox game.

Is Young enjoying Boston so far?

"I'm liking it, everyone here is real peaceful, really nice," said Young. "It's a great town. I didn't get a chance to actually walk through it, but from what I've seen it's really nice."

Sitting in the first row of the Green Monster seats, Young reveals that there is something special about his first trip to Fenway.

"This is actually my first baseball game, ever," explained Young. "Being at the Green Monster is very special… I can't wait for our first game at the Garden. I'm sure it's going to be sold out, they show a lot of support here."

Re: James Young May Miss Celtics Summer League Action with Strained Neck!

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Boston Celtics rookie James Young was not expected to participate in Thursday's on-court workout as the team's summer squad engaged in its final practice before departing for Orlando. And while Young's participation in the upcoming five-game summer slate remains uncertain, coach Brad Stevens stressed that his neck issues are minor and the team is exercising extreme caution in limiting his activity.

Young injured his neck during a minor car accident last month and cancelled his remaining pre-draft workouts. The Celtics selected him at No. 17 in last week's draft, but he hasn't been able to engage in contact drills this week.

"He did some more stuff [Wednesday], as far as non-contact on the bike. I think he’ll continue to do some of that stuff today," said Stevens. "But I haven’t been given a timeline on [his return to contact activities]. Obviously, hey, he was in a car accident a couple weeks ago, it’s summer league, we want to be very, very smart about this with him.

"He’s anxious to play, he’s antsy, he wants to. But at the same time, I want to be cognizant of the big picture.

Pressed on if the team considers the neck issue a short-term injury, Stevens added an emphatic, "Yes. No question."
