Giving up Garnett and Allen for Smith we are not going win much next year or after unless you have Dwight Howard to go with him.

If the Celtics think they have no shot at the title next year I am all for rebuilding sooner rather than later.  Not sure Josh Smith is my first choice, though.  But someone of his ilk may help to get other players here during a rebuilding process.

    Hi,
I don't think KG and/or RA will fit into the trade money-wise. Also, Celtics need center not a PF. Also, it looks like DA wants to rebuild on the fly. If the he breaks the core he'll have to rebuid from ground up.
But at this time of NBA-uncertainty we can dream of any trade, of any roster combination.

Dwight Howard(notes) has been a proponent of the Magic trying to make a deal for Smith, a childhood friend, but general manager Otis Smith is low on assets. Houston has long been intrigued with Smith, but like Orlando and New Jersey, also probably doesn’t have the right pieces to make a trade. Hawks GM Rick Sund has long coveted Kevin Garnett(notes) and Ray Allen(notes) – two aging Celtics entering the final years of contracts – but Celtics GM Danny Ainge has yet to show an inclination to break up his core for next season.

    Re: Josh Smith Prefers Boston

The Celtics are simply putting off trying to rebuild until the big contracts are done, after NEXT season. That means we are entering a season in hell. The Celtics will NOT run into greater luxury tax stratus when the swamp will be drained of cash commitments in 12 months time. Then, and only then, will the TRUE rebuilding begin.

There is nothing in Ainge's running of the team that INDICATES HE HAS THE DESIRE, OR THE PERMISSION FROM OWNERSHIP, TO EMPTY THE TREASURY (opps, caps, sorry!) on available free agents while the payroll has been maxed. It's NOT going to happen.

Davis will be gone, and good riddance. When I heard he fired his personal trainer and gained 20 pounds I wrote him off. No team needs a forward who is immature, overweight, short, and out of shape. I don't think that will change in the future given how he approached his professional responsibilities after signing a better , but still relatively humble (3.3 million) contract. Imagine how he'd be if he actually got 10-12 million/year? Some fool GM will pay him that, but not Ainge, and he shouldn't!

WE have no hope of signing REAL front court help this year. A 25th pick in the draft ? Erden and then the terrible Kneepad Kristic were far better than some non-talented rookie who'll never get on the court.

Nope...it's going to be a season in hell next year, and for several to come. I say let's start the rebuilding NOW, even if you have to trade our stars to get it done. This current cast will not bring home another title. WE could have won two more after the last one, but GM Danny Strange screwed the pooch in not paying for guys who left in free agency. So what makes anyone think he'd suddenly change his past practice when his "stars" are much older and much less able to play at their own previous standards, meaning such expenditures will be far less likely to produce a title? He won't, and they are done.

Never herd any rumors on Dwight coming to Boston but if Fierce (Mr. Wrong) says it he must be right...              NOT!!!! HA!HA!HA!HA!HA!

    Really, Rico?

Don't Rule Out the Celtics Inquiring About Dwight Howard

If there's one thing we know about Dwight Howard, it's that he's not a big fan of trade speculation, especially when it concerns him.

That's understandable, but I'm afraid he's going to have to put up with it anyway. Speculating about trades is what us writers do, and we just can't help ourselves when it comes to players as incredibly talented as Howard.

So with that in mind, why don't we go ahead and discuss the possibility of Dwight Howard being traded to the Boston Celtics.

    Absurd, right?

    Actually, I don't think so.

Hey Rico, here's another Dwight Howard and the Celtics rumor.

If Danny can do all that and still maintain the cap flexibility to make a run at Howard in 2012, well, then he's a better GM than I thought (and I'm still a big supporter of Dan).

Josh Smith? Are you kidding me? If only there were point values for mean, grimacing faces, Josh could be a star. This guy rebounds when he wants to and cannot understand that height is his major advantage. Otherwise, why would he hang out on the point all the time? Josh Smith a rebuilding piece? No way -- maybe a spare part on a good team but not much more.

Doc signed for five years not because he was doing the right thing.  He did so because Ainge and he discussed a very specific plan over the next years.  None of us know what that plan is but suffice to say Doc has some good idea of what they are going to do in free agency and trades.

Howard is a fan of Doc and it would not be out of the ordinary to assume they have expressed desires to work together.  I have a strong feeling if Orlando can't move him this year in a trade that Howard will sign with the Celtics next year in free agency.

This is where the Mike Brown thing jumps and bites the Laker franchise.  Doc signed here for five more years.  After the run he has had here he surely would not have re-signed to rebuild and go through the lost years before 2007-8.  They have a plan.  What is it nobody but them seems to know right now.

Hey Rico, I thought the Mavs don't stand a chance against the Lakers, what happened?

Then I said Dallas has a slight chance after the 27 pts. Massacre they don't stand a chance. It's just frustrating to see those Lakers with a 16 - 1 record after the break, I mean that is ridiculous and incredible.

    We don't get a break...

I am exited about the Celtics getting a great win against the Spurs but in the Process we helped the Lakers to get closer to the best record in the  league and if that wasn't enough the Lakers blow out Dallas by 27. First I thought the Spurs would have a chance to beat the Lakers the way they were playing but after the Lakers turned on the switch and spanked the Spurs on their own back yard I realized there is no way the Spurs can beat the Lakers. Then I said Dallas has a slight chance after the 27 pts. Massacre they don't stand a chance. It's just frustrating to see those Lakers with a 16 - 1 record after the break, I mean that is ridiculous and incredible. I don't see how we can beat the Lakers any way and much less without home court.

IN A heartbeat.. you trade ray for him. put delonte at the 2 (assuming he comes back) , green at 3, josh at 4 and kg at 5 with pp coming off the bench. that automatically makes us better as as a top 6

NFW.  Pass on Smith.  an inconsistent and incomplete player.

Jerry West will be gunning for Howard to join the Warriors, but I can't see Howard joining any team that is not in the hunt for the championship in 2012
and of course the Lakers will be doing all they can to land Howard...but I think Boston would be the best fit for him of any NBA team and I believe we will have the wherewithall to land him financially...
