In response to teejaytee70's comment:
There better be more to the plan than just Love, Rondo, and a bunch of role players because if there is not, well, then say hello to your 43 win team.
I'm sure Danny isn't going to acquire Kevin Love and then just kick back and say "Well, that's done. Time to relax." I wouldn't expect a 50+ win season in Loves first year here, but Danny should be able to establish a very good to elite core over the next two years. This would make the third year the one in which they push for a top 3 spot in the east and at least an appearance in the East finals.
Just my opinion, but I think Rondo and Love together could have a 6-7 year window to realistically compete at a top level. In a perfect world Danny builds a team that (between years 3-7) can get to at least 3 E.C. Finals, make 2 finals appearances and (hopefully) win both.
But yes, it will take Danny and ownership a lot of hard work, guts, and luck. But every team that doesn't have Lebron needs the same set of circumstances to succeed.
I am not as scared of Miami and Indiana being unbeatable forces for the next 5+ years as some fans are. Indiana is on shaky ground already, and Bird has said multiple times that ownership there are unwilling to spend like other top teams. Stephenson has probably priced himself out of Indiana, Hibbert showed that he can and will disappear in long stretches, and David West is starting to slow down due to age.
Miami is aging fast. It will be interesting to see how long and for how much they are willing to re-sign Bosh and Wade for. If they basically keep the same team I can see them being contenders for two to three more years tops. Just in time to be overthrown by the up and coming new look Celtics.
