"The proper mindset, in every player's mind, is abstinence. That is: to not complain," NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson said. "The focus here is to just play the game. We have a great game. We have great players. We have a great product. Let's focus on executing offense and defense and being highly competitive. Complaining doesn't have a part in our game, and complaining has never changed a non-call to a call, or a call to a non-call."

I agree with the new rules. Complaining needs to stop.

If you don't like the new rules or can't live with the player's absence of "free speech", then for goodness sake... fans and players alike.... find another sport.

I agree with Susan. I disagree with PUD!!
Nba is saturated with unnecessary rules and regulation. By imposing so many, they can manipulate the outcome of the game (legally based on their rules) in any which way.

These player's adrenalins are on the rush, the game is fast & physical. Raising fist, stumping, and gorilla chest beating can't be avoided.

I read the article and I think the referees are getting a little too thin skinned. These rule changes on technical fouls are going too far. Some slight changes may be in order, but no extreme changes.

Re: MORE CALLS BY THE REFS NEXT SEASON

This is more window dressing from Stern. Instead of fixing the real problem, he wants to make sure that the players do not high light star-calls, and poor officiating. If the players don't make a big deal about calls, many newer fans will likely think that the officiating has improved.

If he wanted to make the NBA more of a sport and less an entertainment, he would stop the star-calls.

    1. Howard - no driving into the chest of other players with his shoulder lowered.
    2. Lebron - no more four or five step travels with the ball tucker under his arm.
    3. Durant - no more fouls when he misses a shot and nobody is close.
    4. Kome - no more flagrant fouls that are not called
    5. Nowinski - no more elbow clear out moves
    6. Pierce - no more football running back drives to the hoop (He does have to dribble)
    7. Rondo - no palming the ball
    8. Kome - refusal to foul out the Laker's star player under any circumstances.
In the finals Kome had five fouls for much of one game and he dared the refs to toss him with his aggressive play. They did not.

Also changing the way that games are called needs to stop. In general the NBA has traditionally called regular season games tighter than playoff games. This was true for most of last year and also true for most of the play-offs.

It changed for games one and two of the finals. Such turn arounds in officiating style artificially influence games and it should not be allowed.

While some of these star-calls offer minor advantages like Rondo, dominating advantages are allowed for Lebron, Howard, and Durant.

If Stern were serious about improving the game, those are things that he would stop. Instead he has put even more power in the hands of the officials to control the game.

Great post!  I really believe this will have a negative outcome during the season and more complaining by the NBA fans.  Many interesting posts by NBA fans about this article on ESPN.

I had a second thought. More technicals called means more big fines for players which increases revenue to the NBA big wigs. Stern and the others just gave themselves a big fat pay raise.

You are so wrong it hurts to read your posts. Complaining has been the source of every rule change and every interpretation change that the NBA has made. How do you think we wound up with the rules regarding offensive fouls. It was complaining about how bad the calls were, how inconsistent they were, that brought it to the attention of the league. A lot of complaining.

I you don't like complaining about bad calls you should change sports because in the history of the NBA if has been a regular part of the game.

What I don't like is Stern suppressing free speech by fineing anyone who complains about bad foul calls and by virtue of that he suppresses the complaining by the people who should be heard the most. The players and the coaches.

It is ridiculous for anyone to say that complaining about inconsistent and bad calls is somehow out of line.

Another bad move by the NBA. This is to make sure the puppets, I mean players, are good little boys and dont give the viewing public any reason to believe the games are fixed or the refs have agendas. As bad as the refs have been, Stern wants to empower them more and make their "T" calls even more Subjective now..

The NBA is no less than a dictatorship where the players must be silent and nod their heads like bobble dolls so the rest of the world thinks everything is just peachy.  Take emotion out of the game because it spotlights the real problem, the NBA refs and Sterns agenda.

Posted by Karllost[/QUOTE] The funniest part is that there can't be two adults watching this game "The NBA" in it's currant form who don't immediately think that Vince McMahon is the real commissioner of the NBA. The product has gone down hill ever since Creepy Sterns took over! More crooked Referees now than ever in the history of the game. Who really cares except the Bookies! I find the very idea of this to be abhorrent.

What planet to the officials live on? You could have several bad calls go against you in a game and yet you can't complain or show disgust on the court?

"Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court."

Just what classifies as an air punch? Players do air punches after making a huge play, is that now illegal? Some dunks are also aggressive, as are moves to the basket.

Without Sheed and Perk missing most of the season I don't think this will affect the Celtics that much. The Lakers on the other hand might get more techs out of this because Kobe tends to react violently when he doesn't like the call.
