OLYMPICS THOUGHTS THREAD, HOPE SOLO is a BETTER athlete than MICHAEL PHELPS?

sorry, since there are no olympic specific boards here, figure to just make a long thread one (hopefully). first of, with bball, any doubts that these pups could have held a candle to the 1992 team just went out in permanent smoke with the lithuanian game. no way any of those leaders allow their team to take any of those guys lightly and not blowed out lithu by at least 30. heck, them boys never won by less than 32. margin of victory or point diferrential is one the best measures of team greatness. in tennis, shocked how easily murray blowed out federer. was thinking he would win in a close 5-setter. i mean murray was playin at home and had just lost to fed in the wiby finals.. tough to beat a hungry guy twice in a row on his home court.

2. have no beef with nbc's non-live all the time or taped-delay coverage. its called capitalism and common sense. the american audience maximizes viewership at primetime so u show it then. just hope they had a more accessible live web deal. the ratings have been the highest in history, thus they must be doing someting well (up big time from beijing games). baseball and golf should somehow be included as well. would like to see mlb shut down and send their best guys for a few weeks to compete.

3. london has really done a great job. too bad romney got it wrong per usual and unnecessarily tOOK cheap shots at the hosts' prep work.

4. usain bolt is a beast. would love to see belichick take a flyer on him as a renaldo nehemiah type at the moss-type fly-route position and have brady hit him in stride versus revis.

Good coverage of the games here. 8 Channels. Currently watching the men's triathalon. Been cheering on the Australian and Canadian teams. Very happy seeing the men's basketball team beat Russia last night, biggest win for the team for a long. Enjoyed the women's marathon too, great course around London, all the major sites. Making me excited about going there next year.

Re: OLYMPICS THOUGHTS THREAD

I disagree somewhat about giving NBC a lot of credit - way too much volleyball, beach or otherwise. Fortunately, Comcast has an HD station that shows only basketball otherwise we'd be at the mercy of the suits who want to see women in bikinis playing in the sand.  There are minor sports that could be shown but aren't, so that NBC can show tape-delayed events.  I understand the time difference and the need to record; most events would happen while we're still in bed or at work, but the choice of what to show could be much better.

Here's what I've learned about the US men's basketball team:

Rondo might be the best PG in the league if we have only Williams' and Paul's play here to compare.  Rondo's creativity and awareness puts him above those two, at least as judged by their olympic play. Williams seems out of control much of the time.

The rapist is cooked.  All he can do is back a guy down and shoot fadeways. No defense, no movement without the ball, and his shooting has deteriorated to the point of being awful.  International players aren't afraid of him and actually try to take advantage of his failings.  It's sad, and makes me wonder what the Nash addition might do to (not for) him - will he still want the ball at crunchtime when he's 3-20? Yes, he will, but will he get it now that they have a guard with an ego who has the ball in his hands.
Durant is the best player on the planet. That's "." as in period. Great (clutch) shooter, off-the-ball defender, can pass, and can take it in or shoot from 30'.

Overrated: Westbrook, Hardin (both playing as they did in the Finals - poorly), the rapist (see above), Anthony (looks lost most of the time, but why?).

Underappreciated: Iguodala (playing inspired ball - would look great in green but it's too late for that now that Philly's on the upswing; they won't let him go for peanuts like they might have a year or two ago), Love (gets a lot out of his abilities - not very athletic but highly effective).

Just what you'd expect: LaQueen (still cries over every call but is playing hard and generally well), Chandler (no offense but serviceable the other way).

Question mark: Davis (obviously raw and young but plays like he's going to be a force in the Duncan mold - can run and, with his long arms, should defend well. But not playing enough to make a complete evaluation.  Hope he develops as he keeps his head on straight - as it seems to be now).

KrzyzewskiHas made great substitutions and has handled the players well.

Referees: Evenly terrible. They aren't favoring one team or another, they're just missing calls and making bad ones. However, their evenness is more than NBA refs can sustain.  They seem to understand that fans aren't there to see the officials, which the NBA fools can't comprehend.  Ladies and gentlemen, I give you ...... Joey "the Psycho" Crawford!

Re: OLYMPICS THOUGHTS THREAD

painter, since I am at work I cannot say I know exactly what sports are being televised.  I do know that with Verizon FIOS, I have about 4 or 5 channels on which to watch the Olympics.  I have yet to see Bolt's victory, the women's 100 m hurdle and a few other events because they were past my bedtime and I already knew the results.

As for men's BB, I disagree with your assessment of Rondo using Paul and Williams' Olympic performance.  Unlike Deron Williams, Chris Paul IS showing his ability to be creative and aware on the court of everything going on around him.  Paul is directing our offense and getting the ball to the person who should get it.  And on the defensive end, Paul is a hard-nosed, in your face on ball defender.  He's being very disruptive.  When the 3rd quarter began yesterday, Paul was the leader of our defense.  He pressured the ball and caused all kinds of havoc to their offense.  Now what separates Paul from Rondo is the HUGE shots Paul hit with the clock winding down.  Paul made some difficult shots that I'm not confident Rondo's capable of making in the same situation.  That's where they differ and that goes in Paul's favor.

I think our best players have been Durant, Carmello, Paul and Lebron (Iggy is right there with them).  Carmello has been unguardable and he never was a defensive specialist.  He's also rebounding effectively.

Kobe does look "cooked".  He looks terrible!  When he hits one shot, he goes into "Mamba-mode" but he no longer has "Mamba-skills".  Other than the one or two vintage Kobe moves, he's been totally guardable.  And he's missed way too many shots and forced way too many shots.  He just seems to be a step too slow on both ends of the court.  Watching yesterday, I believe Iggy should have been given his minutes.  He's been much more of a contributor than Kobe.

Westbrook has played well but Harden is definitely overrated.  Love and Chandler are giving what they are expected to give (rebounding, defense and some inside presence).

But Carmello and Durant are the primary scorers for this team.  Both of them are unguardable and can score whenever they want.  I'd like to see Lebron defer less and I have a feeling that, now that it's "money-time", he will defer less and be more of an impact player.

And the officiating is terrible.  And one final thing, Ginobilli and Scola are the world's biggest flops, even in Olympic play.  I have never seen as many flailings to the ground as I do with these two.  "Man up" and play!

I'm at the edge of my seat watching the Olympic Equestrian event...so much excitement...zzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzz....ohhhh, just fell of the couch....

Funny that one of the winner is the so-called royals.
Worse enough to include/watch countries who can't afford a ball, let alone a fake sport
that needs a hybrid royal horse.
Oh, yeah the horse is the one who is competing --- not the royal azz.Laughing

CHE, hope you didn't hurt yourself falling off the couch.  That sailing is pretty "edge of your seat" competitive.  And what in the bejesus is "Modern Pentathlon" as opposed to "Antique Pentathlon" or "Traditional Pentathlon"?

At least I saw a highlight of the archer lady hitting the bullseye and hitting the camera behind the bullseye.  I guess she would be called an "archette".

In Response to Re: OLYMPICS THOUGHTS THREAD:
Agree about the DVR, it is key to watching the olympics. I dont know how anyone can sit thru all those commericals and random events like shooting ( that should not be an olympic event no athletism involved) horseback riding, archery etc. I have really enjoyed volleyball, handball(surprising), gymnastics, track and field, even soccer and of course hoops. Its been a great olympics for USA. With DVR you control what you watch and WHEN you watch it. I work till midnight ET so when I get home i have like 11 hours of events recorded, I pretty much watch in an 1.5 hrs all the events that I am intersted in for that day.  Also watching the usa mens basketball team, they could really use rondo. A pg who just DRIVES, doesnt settle for jumpers and can really distribute the ball to all those scorers. Deron, WESTBROOK and to a lesser extent with cp3  all are scorers, theyve always looked to score the basketball,  but with  all the offensive studs on team usa (lebron, kobe, durant, melo) those guys need to be true pg's. By setting the table for these guys getting them  some ez hoops and drive and kickouts , all things rondo does at an elite level. Look at rondo with our big 3 how well he does at spreading the wealth, thats a skill that not to many have or get the opportunity to develop, rondos been doing it for 4 years now. In a way im glad that he isnt on the team, let him rest up, we need his legs to be fresh. I just think with rondo and another center, either dwight or even bynum team usa would be that much tougher and would have a more complete team.  The difference between the dream team and this 2012 team is the frontline. You had ewing, david robinson. chuck barkley, karl malone. WOW. Compared to, kevin love, tyson chandler, anthony davis and the injured blake griffin. What a difference in bigs.
Posted by gman101019
Son, there is no way Rhondo is good as CP3. Sorry that Coach K left him off the team, but the pg's on the team are better than Rhondo. Rhondo is a good player, but no way is he better than the pg's on the current USA team. I will agree that his defense would be better than the others, but if you look at the current game it's all about the "O." It's a shame, but that is how it is. How many times did you see players drive down the middle of the lane... way to many! The current USA squad knows they are better then every other team and that's part of the problem. If they played to their capabilties they should've blown out Austrailia by 30 in first half and 50 by end of game. Our guards were so much superior that it was not even close. Mills a second rate pg for Spurs I believe and Dellavedova was nothing more than a play making guard for St. Marys a couple yrs. ago.

Re: OLYMPICS THOUGHTS THREAD, watch at 2:45p today as HOPE is renewed as the US takes gold from the JAPANESE!

I never said Rondo is BETTER than those 3. I simply said he would be a better FIT. Hes better at getting to the rim than both cp3 and dwill. Hes a much better passer than russ westbrook. He can outdefend them also. Rondo's biggest strength is setting up his teammates for high % looks. Everything team usa does is one on one, rondo would fix that. Plus rondo doesn't settle for jumpers. he attacks the rim constantly and breaks down defenses. That would translate VERY well in olympic basketball where opposing teams dont have the athletism to defend someone as quick with the ball as rondo, eveb nba defenders cant even stay with rondo. I just think cp3 and dwill are redundant, half court pgs who like to shoot from the perimeter. If their shots arent falling they lose a lot of value.  Where rondo, can still bring the d, rebounding, passing, ball handling.
